Björn Borg and Mick Jagger in Studio 54

Translated extract (from swedish) from the Björn Borg-interview in the swedish revue Café issue 8/2006.

Did your generation of tennis stars have more fun than today's?

- I think so. Say it rained at Wimbledon. Then we could sit in the dressing room and play cards and bet. It was more like a gang. It's not like that at all today. There is a lot more money involved now, it does a lot. The community that we had does not exist in the same way. We went out a lot together and stuff.

To Studio 54 in New York, for example. The world's most classic club.

- Yes, we were often there when you didn't play the next day. Studio 54 was where the whole world wanted to be at the time. It was crazy fun there.

I read that author Truman Capote described how he partied there with Bianca Jagger and you.

- Yes, that's how it was.

So if you met him you said "howdy Truman..."

- Yes, of course. Or "hello Andy" to Andy Warhol. Everyone was there. I knew them. We were friends.

Who did you go there with?

- Some of the tennis guys. Vitas Gerulaitis, John McEnroe, Ilie Nastase. It was mostly us. We had a blast. It was a special kind of people who were there. We first partied there and then often went to someone's house for an after party. Liza Minnelli was often there. Or we went to Mick Jagger's house or someone. Those are cool memories.

Do you know Mick Jagger?

- Yes, all of them. It turned out that way. I have a special memory with Jagger. One time, Lennart Bergelin, my trainer, and I would go to Studio 54. I had just lost the finals of the Masters, which was at Madison Square Garden, so we went there. Amongst others, Mick Jagger was there that night. He suggested that we come with him to his house. I told Lennart that, come, we'll go to Mick Jagger's house. Sure, Lennart said. Mick Jagger is really fit. He wanted to show Lennart how well in shape he was. They talked physical training at Jagger's house for a couple of hours. Mick showed how he trained and how he performed on stage. Lennart gave advice. It was a wonderful sight.

Oh yeah. I was a Björn Borg fan before I was a fan of Mick Jagger. Probably it was the long hair - you know, before him it was people like Geronimo or Sitting Bull... Like Mick, and unlike Keith, as a young boy I always prefered the native Americans over the cowboys...

That's all well but I think it was in that era Björn and Vitas also caught up with some bad habits otherwise mostly attributed to models and rock stars...
Borg's career ended far to soon (he was only 26 when he retired).
