Just My Imagination at Hampton Roads december 18th 1981 is THE ESSENTIAL Godlike nirvanic Stones.

Charlie's double wack at the end on the bass drum and Keith and Ron just laughing how good it is. (Or Jagger just cracked a string hehe)

These are the double tunes I show while introducing a lady to our lads:

Yes, they really locked into a groove on JMI in 1981. That Hampton version is sublime - lots longer than the Still Life edit.

The 1973 Pacific tour needs an official release

I agree, I absolutely love that long long version, so groovy, so much space, it's beautiful.

This is such an easy tune to play, I'm quite surprised that they have abandoned it.

I also love the other slower/mellower tunes from Hampton - YCAGWYW, and B of B (although the latter is marred by Bill's out of tune bass, if I recall correctly)

Their studio version is terrible and is the worst track on SOME GIRLS but how they performed it in 1981-82 is fantastic. The brilliance of STILL LIFE is Time Is On My Side and Imagination. Those performances are excellent.

On the live album, Let's Spend The Night Together is from that Hampton show, the PPV, and has a third guitar magically playing in the break yet the very ending isn't from that show.

Since the next night was recorded, it's possibly from the second show.

Hampton

What I love about this version is the dynamic between Mick and Keith - right on time. I feel like during a live show Mick always wants to say something and he wants Keith to play the riff right after his word. Here - it magically happened in a perfect dynamic way.

Is there a JMI version with Mick Taylor -Kansas- 1981? According to Ron Wood he took too many unasked solos on that occasion. .

I was at the KC and Hampton shows in 1981.

Mick Taylor was very low in the mix at KC. Sometimes inaudible.

The Hampton version is one of my favorite live cuts.

Some girls is full of A-D songs, I suspect that just my imagination was the seed that set all the others off!

The sonic tapestry woven by the stones playing this song in Hampton, in my humble opinion, is the pinnacle of the rolling stones sound. Charlie and Bill, as always, blend together to create the unmistakable flavor of the Stones' sound.
I don't have anything against the present musician who plays bass, but Bill is missed.

I'm not a huge fan of Ernie's sax solo on JMI.

Actually I made a mistake! I was thinking about WOAF. Nothing beats Sonny's solo. Don't mind the other Ernie solos though.

The 1978 Detroit version from the KBFH broadcast is superior in my opinion because
it is played at a faster tempo and Ronnie's guitar work is razor sharp (unlike Hampton '81) The performance has more tension because both Keith and Ronnie are in perfect balance. Mick also seems totally invested in this performance, which can't be said of 1981-82. I also share DGA35's opinion of the Ernie Watts sax solo. It goes on too long and causes the song to drag. The song is better without it.

Re: Just My Imagination

Mick might have been too invested in this performance as far as the radio broadcast censor was concerned.

Great topic

Still Life got me into The Stones

Just My Imagination is one of the highlights

That and Hampton versions are just sublime

Texas 78 version is also fantastic, bit edgier and a bit rough round the edges. Brilliant

Hampton 1981 to me is the Stones finest two hours of their entire career, with Imagination one of the most brilliant tracks. Wyman is utterly fantastic, the guitars are fantastic, I love the way Ernie Watts takes part of the interplay and weaving, Jagger's is at his best, and Charlie is sublime throughout the entire concert.

I would also like to add that the studio version on Some Girls is also one of the Stones' top achievements.

As for the live versions, I also really like the 2006 Giants stadium version. (it was a damn good concert anyway)

I have to disagree. Just My Imagination from Hampton 81 is very good, but the Texas 78 version is even better. It's raw, has truly brilliant guitar interplay and Jagger's performance is at the very top.
