Didn't know that Keith owned quite so many of those early high power twins.

I sometimes think that Pierre is the real collector of all those guitars and amps.

Keith may be the museum's patron...but Pierre is the director and curator grinning smiley.

I'd love him to do a book for all we gear nerds about Keith's guitars and amps...with stuff like how he likes his Gibson ES series wired ? and what tubes are preferred in the old twins ?

A book about his guitars would be fascinating; yet I do wonder: how 'technical' is Keith? He doesn't strike me as someone who obsesses over amp-settings or wiring. His guitar tech may very observe the most minutest detail; yet I simply can't imagine Keith doing so. I'm sure Keith may dictate the 'sounds' he prefers; but what else?

Yep, Keith know what he likes... and Pierre knows how to get it .

He's like Keith's musical bagman.

Come on Pierre , lets have a book !

something like the Stones Gear book...but with much more first hand insight and depth.

And less mistakes...

And way more references of where the authors got their wisdom from!

Years ago Keith told me, via a guitar magazine interview that I read and probably have somewhere, the best amp advice I'd ever found about the Fender Champ (silver, not tweed) and that is - everything on ten. That's a total of three knobs.

It's also Mick's preferred amp to play harmonica through.

The late Chuch Magee (Rolling Stones backline head from 1975 to 2002) once told me Keith's main Fender Twin amp is serial number 0002. He said he bought it sometime in the early 80's for $750. The backup Twin is serial number 0003. Both amps were likely made by the same hands at the Fender factory in 1958, using the exact same materials. The #0002 amp was bought sometime later from a collector for "a lot" of money. I've heard that at this point Keith owns all of this variety of Twin amps from serial #0002 to #0010. They didn't know the whereabouts of amp #0001 but it may have been a factory prototype and was never sold. Chuch said other than a few new capacitors and pots (and replacement tubes) these amps are stock (including the original Jensen 12-inch speakers) although some of the other early Twins had replacemt custom-made Celestion speakers.

Thats probably good advice for a Champ...but keith's runaway gob often extends to gear discussions too...

In another guitar mag interview he claimed he could, given a bit of time , make any guitar and amp combination sound like any other !

Obviously wasn't talking too literally there .

From a few photos it's been possible to glean that typical stage settings for the main Celestion loaded Twin are bright input vol about 4, bass about 3, treble around 9, mids around 8 and presence about 7

But we don't know what tweaks have gone on within the amp, at the inputs or elsewhere, to yield those preferred settings.

Neither do we know for example how Keith Likes his Gibsons wired ...50s style, typically brighter and more open sounding ? or "modern" style, thicker and kind of more solid sounding ?

This is the "anorak" stuff that sparks my curiosity, and the kind of stuff I'd love Pierre to write a little book about grinning smiley

Keith got his first Tweed Twin in 1985 during recordings for Dirty Work. The High Power Tweed as loved by Keith was introduced in 1958 and only produced for two years. Just about all the Vintage Tweed Twins have their speakers replaced with higher powered Celestions as the originals came with under-powered AlNiCo speakers.

Keith's ES-355's all have original, thus 1950's, wiring.

Jagger records the harmonica through a Boogie MKIIB amp.

They have mentioned the Champ here and there, but the issue that I have yet to see a picture of a champ with the Stones. Theu used Princeton's, Deluxes and Twins, but not Champ's.

Keith main recording setup is a Tweed Twin combined with a Tweed Harvard, but also a 1954 Tweed Pro get much use. They basically have just about all Tweed amp versions from the 1950's to use... And they like to add rarer amps to this mix, like WEM, Selmer, Watkins or an old Supro or Oahu.
