I don't know what Keith took that day, but his posing and constant pulling of a tough-guy face makes it unbearable to watch.

Welcome To Shepherds Bush World Premiere,

The Rolling Stones

Leicester Square Vue, November 21st 2024

Hard to believe that it is 25 years since I was scurrying around central London in the early hours, looking for clues as to where tickets for the Stones’ Shepherds Bush Empire June 8th 1999 gig would be going on sale. A lorry unloading crash barriers outside the Tower Records Piccadilly store at 6am was all the clue I needed, and I joined my fellow Stones fanatics in a makeshift queue. Having got the all-important wrist band I had an anxious 36 hours whilst I ensured I did not lose it, including a shower with the relevant wrist carefully positioned outside the shower stall. Finally show time. Apparently Sheryl Crow supported but I remember nothing of her set. Somehow by the time the Stones emerged I had weasled through the crowd and was one row back from the front on Ronnie Wood’s side.

Seeing the band at such close quarters was fantastic, an experience I relived on Thursday night at the Leicester Square Vue where the 90 minute concert movie Welcome To Shepherds Bush had its premiere. We had just found our seats when Sara texted that there were free drinks in the bar upstairs so we took a quick detour. Veteran Stones PR Bernard Doherty introduced the screening, highlighting some of the high spots from the gig and passing swiftly over the after party.

Shattered was an uncompromising opening number and served notice that the band were going to be operating in “uncharted territory” to quote Muck Jagger. This was only partly true. The closing duo of Brown Sugar and Jumping Jack Flash were played as if the band had already migrated up the road to Wembley Stadium. Whilst Tumbling Dice had a rolling rhythm it has not achieved in recent years, Honky Tonk Women was distinguished only by a Crow / Jagger duet. Whilst the rest of the set was built around rarely played live number I remember being disappointed at the time that they included recent tracks like Brand New Car and Moon Is Up. Saint Of Me justified its inclusion through the audience continuing to sing the refrain way after the band had stopped playing.

Other rarities were more satisfying. Melody had only been played once before at the El Mocambo gig whilst Route 66 had a snap, crackle and pop that could have been transported from 1964. The highlight for me was I Got The Blues, where the band played with restraint and the four-piece brass section were the perfect foil to Jagger’s Otis Redding-style vocal. Keith’s You Got The Silver was a rarity then and was played beautifully by him and Ronnie Wood. The ensuing Before They Make Me Run featured Leah Wood on backing vocals, a fact that I had not noticed at the time.

Watching the film of the gig is bittersweet. Keith plays a lot more solos than we have seen in recent years. Lisa Fischer is no longer part of the band, and I miss her sassy interplay with Jagger. An even bigger hole has been left by Charlie Watts but there are lots of great shots of him in action, always looking bemused and slightly distracted as he nails another number without breaking sweat. The sound in the cinema was well balanced with even Chuck Leavell’s piano audible in the mix. Split-screen imagery is used a lot but it works, frequently highlighting how what is happening onstage is being received by the audience.

A show of hands revealed a fair few of the Leicester Square audience had actually been at the gig. As we clutched our goodie bags and headed out into the cold London night, the evening felt like a celebration that both we and the band are still upright after all these years.

Damn. Your review is a bit trifling - I'm not sure if I should be elated about seeing something from the 1999 tour or depressed that not only is the show not that deep, which they could've easily avoided, but so much has changed in not good ways.

I get the feeling that I'll watch the show once because I won't be able to handle watching Keith pose like a ponce as much as he has in what little has been released.

Some observations
- I don’t mind Keith’s posing but that three-note noodling around in almost every song is tiresome. I wish he would just stick to the rhythm parts instead of this pseudo lead playing or whatever you might call that. Especially when he‘s playing those blues licks on top of major chords it just seems out of place.

- Mick doesn’t seem to know where to move in such a small space. It does not really showcase the great performer that Mick is.

- Great energy, especially during the second half. One of the best JJFs I‘ve heard.

- While the mix is not perfect it seems better than a lot of recent releases (maybe because it was not mixed by Sam Wheat. I don’t remember the name of the mixer).

- Moon is up and Brand new car were weak performances to me. I liked Melody and I Got The Blues though.

- The split screens didn’t bother me at all

You had to there at the gig to really appreciate this film.
Keef by the way stole the show that evening, and that’s clearly evidenced in this amazing film.

Now I'm really confused! I thought one of the numerous package purchase variations included a Blu-Ray version?

Someone tell me I'm right!

Thanks

Yeah but since yours truly is a 20th century anachronism I demand a DVD -version.

Why should they release a DVD later? Makes zero sense. They won't release a VHS either. DVD is a nearly 30 years old completely outdated format and doesn't have one single Advantage compared to Blu Ray. I think they simply didn't sell enough with other vault releases to release it economical on 5 different formats therefore they chose to not release it on DVD.

Btw I saw it in cinema on Wednesday. It was fantastic. Keith is full of energy and I enjoyed his playing a lot. Especially the Brown Sugar Intro was awesome. Ronnie on the other side falls a bit under the radar. Sound was great, especially drums and guitars. Vocals we're a bit distanced. The show was mixed by someone I never Heard before. Great energy and great songs.

Can I ask where you saw it on Wednesday? I looked everywhere and it was only being played on Thursday (when I already had a prior engagement sad smiley ).

In Germany it was aired at many Cinemaxx cincemas on Wednesday evening. I don't think there were any other dates

No. During most songs there is splitscreen every now and then. You can look at Saint of Me on YouTube to get a good impression. During the slow songs I think it was not used at all.

25 years after being front row, I finally got to see the show again. Having missed the special event the previous week, I was nonetheless excited to take my seat in a near-empty screening at London's Vue Stratford on Thursday. There were 6 of us in total. Highlights for me:

- Brand New Car: wow, never thought I would say this but it really hit me in a way it never has before, including at the actual show. I simply loved it! Has been on repeat ever since.
- Old faces: recognising so many faces, including my own - somehow I appeared a lot! Well, I was front row.
- My Lisa Fischer moment: blink and you'll miss it, but that was me throwing her a single red rose during the band intros. I'm sure she handed me a set list at the end of the show, but that could just be my memory playing tricks. I'll have it filed away in my collection somewhere if it's true
- The netting: yeah, I'd forgotten about that very simple stage dressing - sparse, but still kinda worked
- Mick's mean streak: when, during the band intros, he chastised (was it Michael Davis?) for "@#$%& up" the trumpet ending on Melody. It bugged me then and it bugged me again. Why be so mean? Mick - you @#$%& up the lyrics on Some Girls - it's the Japanese girls hiding behind those silky sleeves, not Americans!
- The anti-climax has worn off: honestly, I remember being moodily underwhelmed back in 1999. It had been a long day: at the venue by 7am, after sleeping rough outside Tower Records the night before. I think I was just tired and peopled-out. I demanded more rarities! But hey, look what we got. I can honestly say now how thankful I am to have been there
- The Sheffield dash: thanks to some trusty insider info (thanks Matt) we knew where to go when we arrived in London at 2am.
- A few weeks later: I found myself, as a roadie, on the same stage at a Big Country concert; slight embellishment there - my mate's band was a support act to the support act, and I roadied that part of the concert. But hey, I was on the same stage. It counts!

And we get to go again next year. How lucky we are

No, there aren't any bonuses in the Japanese editions - [www.Universal-Music.co.jp] . There's even no Japanese 4K-UHD disc .
