How anyone can say the Voodoo Lounge tour was borderline bad seems borderline insane to me confused smiley

I find the Voodoo Lounge tour the worst tour they have done in their entire career.

The stage, the sound (those guitars....), the clothes, the posing, the songs, the playing -there's just nothing to like for me.

Mathijs

Incredible

They've had a couple of rather flat tours. 1975-76 were very rough. 1994-95 was lacking.

Of course, some great performances on those tours with certain songs but overall, ehhh, 75-76 they were quite sloppy and messy yet still killed with Honky Tonk Women, You Gotta Move, YCAGWYW, Star Star; 94-95 looser than the STEEL WHEELS tours, which made songs like Tumbling Dice, Rocks Off, Shattered, Sweet Virginia and Monkey Man outstanding, but the VOODOO tour, overall, was lacking tenacity, which was in full swing with 1997-99.

Have you heard the August 14, 1994 Street Fighting Man? Keith needed a song map he got so lost. Go to 59:30.

Seems like only yesterday. We had Bill Wyman and the Rythmn Kings at a half empty York Barbican and the following night Stones in South Yorkshire.I remember racing down the M1 after the wet amazing gig at Don Valley stadium in Sheffield and heading to London.Initially I was queuing outside Virgin records, then got word it was to be Tower Records for the £10 tickets.Chris Evan’s confirmed the location on his morning radio show. 500 tickets had already been allocated to the Stones friends and Family.1,500 were up for sale.Someone in the queue allocated numbers and I got spot 150.Relief when I got that wrist band.
The queue at the Empire started early the following morning. Some folk had queued for 31 hours before doors opened at 7.30 pm.The Stones arrived in black limos and were shielded by white barriers as they entered the side door.
Celebrities were everywhere.Marianne Faithfull so friendly to fans.
Managed to get right at the front, leaning on the stage directly in front of Keef.Cameras everywhere at this gig.Already spotted myself numerous times from recent clips. The Stones were on amazing form that night. So relaxed and jovial too.Sloppy on occasions.Mick admitted they “fuxxed up the ending “to Melody.
This show is probably number two on my favourite Stones gigs of all time, number one being the previous night at Sheffield.

Curious what made that Sheffield show extra special?

The (fleet of) cars carrying what I assume were close family & friends from (I guess) their hotel all had a badge to identify them to get through checks/roadblocks.

It read.... "The Empire Strikes Back"

Nice on.

Yah! Me too!

The great beginning with "Not Fade Away"!

I think the Not Fade Away intro was their worst ever: great intro for the first minute or say, and then all the energy went down the drain. The song just doesn't go anywhere when played live, they just didn't know how to end it.

Well....I simply love the 1975 tour, I think it is utterly fantastic. It's a time capsule to when RnR was raw, dirty, sleazy and drugged out, like the mid-1970's were for the Stones. I like the sloppy and messy-ness, I think that's how RnR should be. I think Charlie's at his very best, driven by Ollie Brown, I love Wood's playing, I love the gnarly sound of the guitars, I love Jagger's drugged out 'Only RnR' character.

I agree the 1976 tour is not one of their best tours, even though some shows are actually quite good. But the setlist is subpar, the playing is rough, Billy Preston's ego is too big. I also don't like the sound very much, even though they sound quite good on some audience tapes.

The Steel/Wheels Urban Jungle tour was a slick enterprise, but their playing was outstanding. It might have been the best tour of Keith, they still played quite fast, and the great, great Bill Wyman was utterly fantastic. To be honest, no tour since Bill Wyman left has come close to the level of when Bill still was with them. Darryl Jones just doesn't have what it takes to make the Stones great.

The first part of the 1975 tour was excellent (listen for example to the Boston recording), then it deteriorated, and when they had arrived in LA, Jagger's voice was shot so it's a pain to listen to.

I think Jagger was more acting out this sleazy, drugged up RnR persona, a bit like Bowie was different personas on stage. Jagger sang perfectly fine on most shows, but for New York and Los Angeles he chose to act much more drugged up.

Yes CaptainCorella the Empire strikes back was on the cars.

rebelhipi the Sheffield gig was the best for me because the Stones took it up an extra gear, even more so than the gigs I have seen in Argentina. It rained before the Stones came on.The set was similar to Edinburgh, however we got a brilliant version of Ruby Tuesday and Keef singing You don’t have to mean it.There was a great duet with Mick and Sheryl Crow on HTW.
But what made the performance so great was the torrential down pour whilst they were performing on the small stage. The boys reacted by stepping up their performance in that driving rain.It actually reenergised them, playing with more vigour and attitude. They worked the audience so well we forgot the rain. When Keef introduced You don’t have to mean it in this lashing rain,he joked “Just pretend your in the tropics”.Mick had a hat and overcoat on,and Keef was just in a T shirt.Charlie’s drum kit was under shelter. The other 3 were soaked to the skin but clearly enjoying themselves.
Lisa and Leah Wood were on back up vocals for Keef’s tropical number.By the end of the show the rain had stopped and we got fireworks.
The torrential rain brought out the best show ever for me.I thought at the time, they are just coasting during normal shows, that rain showcased them at their max.

I think my main gripe with the VL tour is the guitar sound. Keith sounded so frigging terrific on his '93 Winos tour, so thick, fat, aggressive, so bold and loud, and then on the VL tour a year later and he sounds thin, clean, no drive and no energy, like a toy transistor radio. And Wood doesn't sound any better, and his playing start to suffer as well...

To play the 4K-UHD disc in native resolution: a 4K Ultra HD BluRay-Player, a HDMI connection and a 4K-capable TV screen. 4K-UHD BluRay-Player are available e.g. from Sony, Panasonic or LG.

The best sound would come from a Dolby Atmos speaker system.

Outside the Empire theatre that night were many paparazzi. Not only were celebrities getting interviewed but also regular fans.Entrance to the Empire apart from a little pushing was relatively straight forward. And security inside didn’t mind fans making a mad dash for their spot.
I got chatting to a guy from Holland called Robert. He was next to me at the front. He had brought a skull hanky for Keef.
Sheryl Crow played for around 30 minutes and got a luke warm reception. She was on for 9 pm.Played 8 songs.White leather pants and a picture of a Bird on a white t shirt. And unusual blue platform shoes.Blue eye shadow to match. If it makes you happy went down a treat. That song Winding road less so.
The 3 floors of the Empire were packed to the rafters.Jade looked very tanned,in a mini skirt and red leather jacket. She was sat at the back of the stage with her boyfriend. Both loved up and drinking beer.
Spotted Elizabeth J. With a yellow camcorder filming crowd.Woody’s wife Jo joined them.
So close to the stage I could already see the set list. The camera guys were in the small pit. There was a rumour that Marianne was going to duet with Mick on Sister Morphine.Lyric sheets for Shattered and Melody taped to the stage floor.
We got the announcement and the Stones roared into Shattered.Highlights for me were Moon is up,Brand new car ,Some girls and Route 66.JJF for encore.Sheryl did HTW duet with Mick earlier.
That 2 hours raced by.Mick was full of jokes that evening. The whole band were laughing and joking.Felt very intimate and personal.
Mick joked about a Mars bar and Charlie and not to believe newspapers. He told us there were many x wives in the audience and that they were all Charlie’s.He welcomed various friends and family, joking that Ron’s family had a whole balcony.
At one point Charlie’s drum kit needed repairing.Mick was telling us it was made from pig skin.Keef picked up on the joke and said something to Mick.Keef was saying Charlie’s shoes are also made from pig skin.More jokes from Mick telling us Charlie was actually a vegetarian.
I was literally 2 m away from the 3 guys. The facial expressions and gestures engrained on my mind.Keef’s eyes so dark and alive.
The guy from Holland passed his hanky to Keef.Keef wiped his brow with it and kept it.Later on Keef passed Robert a plectrum.
Plenty of eye contact from the band. They interacted so well with the fans at the front.I shouted out to Mick about his beautiful white shirt,he looked directly at me and said “I think the moths got to it”.
You got the silver and Keef with his open shirt sat on a chair.Mick’s white skin and veins in his arms.So clear.
Remember Bernard chatting with fans outside before the gig.
Thd gig ended around midnight.Remember saying to Robert “see you on the video”.Grabbed a T shirt and headed out into the night.

Hi stargroover
I enjoyed reading your experience of that evening. I remember wondering how you people were doing down there on the floor. From the balcony it looked very crowdy, to say the least. I think I know that Dutch guy Robert (I am Dutch too). Probably his sir name was “van Otterloo”. A big fan too.
Great memories!

I think the sound of the guitars depends a lot on what they wanted at that time.
However, I think Wood didn't give a damn because he was always out of his mind, he started to worry about the sound only later, when he managed to be a bit lucid.
I don't know who decided the sound, but there's a reason why in their solo careers they were different.

Wasn't Dave Natale (think that's his name) new sound man for the lads in 2005? I remember reacting to the live sound especially during that autumn in the US, very different from the Licks tour. I think the best sounding tours in modern time (post 89) are B2B and Licks. Teles sounding as they should and the hollow and solid bodied Gibsons sounding like they should. In 89-90 Keith was extremely loud, fun for him and I liked it but maybe not as much for yesterday's birthday child... smileys with beer

I'm realy looking forward to it.
But I wonder why they don't release any current show. I don't count the HD N.Y. release. It was nice but very short. They toured in 2017, 18, 19, 21, 22 and 24. The last release was Cuba 2016.
So, hopefully they'll come up with something next year.

Yes, that's right. But it was just a couple of tunes and far from a complete show including video etc.
And the live tracks were only a part of the deluxe version.

Not so hard rocking, but the guitar weave is top notch, it's up there with '78 just with a cleaner sound.

Not sure if it was because of the drugs, but he did good and did give a damn about his role in the songs.
