This is an awesome album. Look at the track list. The weaker side is side 2, but what songs are actually poor? Short and Curlies is a throwaway but Luxury, Fingerprint File, If You Really Want To Be My Friend, even Dance Little Sister (Rip This Joint poor cousin) are still great to hear.

Years ago I was working on something in the dining room and my wife walks by, looks at me, smirks and sings

It's too baaaadddd she's got you by the balllllls

And continued her way to whatever she was doing.

She would start her morning walks with If You Want Blood (You've Got It) on her iPod. She had STICKY FINGERS and EMOTIONAL RESCUE on vinyl. But hearing her sing out that line from Short And Curlies... that was wayyy out there. Mostly because I never saw what was on her iPod.

I always liked the song but her doing that made me listen again and gave me a new appreciation for it.

A Giles Martin remix would be excellent - and @#$%^&*(+)%$%#@ right it better be properly mastered.

This is an album that I would love Giles Martin to do a remix like he did with GHS

Yep - plus an appropriate remastering for a non-muffled sound quality. They should let Giles Martin do this as well to avoid a brickwalled mastering.

Absolutely not. He butchered his version of remastering Sargent Pepper. What are you guys talking about

What? He didn't remaster it, he remixed it. Sam Okell mastered it. Big difference. It sounds great.

Your missing the point. Listen to it compared to his fathers work. Its was subpar. I think thats the problem. Yiu guys don't have bother versions.

Either way there are many many more people that could do a better job on Stones material than this guy.

Like Bob Clearmountain?

It would be interesting if multiple people were utilized for remixing albums similar to how mutliple people do remixes for singles.

I like Giles' remixes of the Beatles albums and of GHS. Not sure how much "better" something could be when the original mix is cemented in. Fortunately you don't have to listen to them and can stick with the original mixes.

On 3 November 1974, I purchased It's Only Rock'n Roll, but...
I was really disappointed that the gatefold sleeve jacket was downgraded to a single folded jacket because of the oil crisis.

However, as for contents, the first three songs blew me away completely.
All in all, I'd been playing the album too much on my turntable to damage the needle.
It's Only R & R was pretty racy and titillating for a teenager in junior high like me.

What a memory.
Alla vostra salute! 50th anniversary!

This brilliant poster was given free of charge to all those who bought the album.

Not to me Toru. I was living in Japan at the time ('73-'76) and bought the album there. Some store salesperson probably has a large collection of those posters grinning smiley

Fingerprint File is an all time favorite of mine. Me that do not share the common praise to the cheesy (to my ears) TWFNO, boldly overrated compared to the beautiful ballad that comes before, TTNTWSG. Love the energy that spurs from side B with L and DLS and of course side A with IYCRM. Four years later, their second effort on a Temptations cover (JMI) would be far more effective in mho than ATPTB, though.

It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll represented the Stones’ weakest studio-effort since 1967’s, Their Satanic Majesty’s Request. Although it’s predecessor, 1973’s, Goats Head Soup, was somewhat of a disappointment to some, it must be remembered that that L.P. was a follow on from the near-mythical run of four top-notch albums, from 1968’s Beggars Banquet, through to 1972’s double extravaganza, Exile on Main Street. It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll is, unfortunately, the runt of their 70’s efforts: badly produced, subpar song-writing, and a very uninspiring collection of songs, overall. There isn’t anything ‘terrible’ amongst the 10-song track-listing, though nor are there any masterpieces. There are some very good moments: It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll (But I Like It) springs to mind, but there are some exceptionally drab offerings: If You Really Want To Be My Friend, Fingerprint File, etc. They should have omitted the cover-version, Ain’t to Proud to Beg – which is B-side level material at this stage of heir career, surely? – and put the terrific Through The Lonely Nights in it’s place, instead. For me, It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll is the epitome of a three-star album.

At the time EOMS was still a drudge of an album. IORR has some fantastic songs on it - two of which you described as "exceptionally drab" - they're different.

Something that upset Stones fans around the globe and would continue to happen.

Weakest track is Luxury.

All the rum I want to drink it. All the whisky too.

There were to release the first Basic Version of IORR ...Mick & Ronnie at the Wick December 1973
other from Munich, Munichland February 1974, Fast talking, Slow walking and some alternate Versions!
Also in Newbury, Stargroves , April 1974 alternate versions
But unfortunately it seems there comes nothing or nothing new!

Yeah, very good album ... agree about Luxury, weakest link. Dance Little Sister: eh, sometimes I think it's not that good, but Mick sings great on it!

It's only Rock'n'Roll albums birthday (but I like it).

IORR is one of my favorite albums. UNDERATED. It's a great album!

I could go through track by track to say what I think is so great about it but it would take hours.

Mick Taylor is HOT on this album. Dance Lil' Sister is my favorite Taylor solo, 2nd favorite is Time Waits for No One, but the reggae/rock mix of Luxury with Taylor, especially the longer version where we get a few more seconds of Taylor's lead. Luxury is one of those great songs buried on the album that wasn't overexposed, every album has one of those songs (Stray Cat Blues, All the Way Down, Too Tight, Monkey Man, etc...)

How about Taylor on bass? So cool!

I could go on and on with Charlie, Keith, Mick & Bill's contributions but I don't have time. I love to sing along to Till the Next Time.

One last thought for now, "If You Really Want to Be My Friend" is a song that gives the Stones a lot of class and refinement. I don't know how to put it in words, but its elegance and grace take the Stones to new heights as if it were classical music (I know not exactly what I want to say but you get the idea). I love If You Really want to be My Friend - sheer elegance and the best Jagger 'Ou Yeah!'The emotions Jagger delivers are among his very best!

If you don't think IORR is a great album, then you haven't played it enough.

The song IORR is a powerhouse telling of Jagger's frustrations. That power chord that starts Ain't Too Proud to Beg.

Why people usually want to compare and rate albums and songs and not just love and appreciate them all, I don't know. It's like the old saying about 'comparing apples to oranges' usually.

Okay, let's start, what song is better Jump On Top of Me or Gimme Shelter? My answer, it doesn't matter. I love them both!

For the people who haven't really given IORR a chance yet... The first time I heard IORR album I thought If You Can't Rock Me, Ain't Too Proud to Beg and Dance Lil' Sister were a load of noise, especially Lil' Sister. The entire band is unbelievably great on that song, especially Jagger. You don't really like this album? Ah man, I'm feeling bad for you right now because you are missing out on a great album.

Why rate or compare songs/albums? I love them all! I'm grateful for every Rolling Stones song, and album and thankful we are still getting more and new Rolling Stones performances.

I was heartbroken when Mick Taylor left the Rolling Stones. I love Mick Taylor. He was perfect for the time he was in the band.

That’s Keith Richards playing all the guitar on Luxury. No vibrato and very much “in the box”. He noodles his way throughout Short & Curlies as well. It’s a shame the mix sucks because Taylor is playing some great jaunty slide there. I can’t tell if he switches to rhythm after the intro or what. Terrible mix as Richards must have been in the room when it happened. Anybody saying Taylor noodles, point them to this song lol

IORR was an important album for me.

I was 15 when it came out. I'd only been a fan for couple of years and had seen them live for the first time in '73, which cemented my love for the band... ,

...but I was still struggling to get to grips with Exile and to some degree GHS.

I just wasn't ready for the chaotic energy of something like Exile ...[and I probably wasn't on my own in that]

IORR was then an entirely more digestible version of the Rolling Stones, and much easier to get into for the 15 year old Spud.

I absolutely loved it back then ...thought it was fantastic !

Have other earlier or later albums overtaken it in my affections since ?

Yes they have ...but IORR was a very important and much loved album for me.

Edited to add...

Played it last night an thoroughly enjoyed every second of it.smiling smiley

Why? The two rhythm guitars (the riff guitar and the syncopated one) are both in open G. The solo guitar has no vibrato, nor any phrasing that resembles Taylor (rather classic Keith).

Dandy, just out of curiosity, is vibrato the same thing as legato? As a schooled saxophone player I always learned the classical italian phrases (legato, crescendo, diminuendo etc etc) and as I'm a self taught guitarist I kept using those rather than the common Rock n Roll ones.

Totally different things there max.

Vibrato is a deliberate wobble in the pitch of a note ...

whereas Legato refers to a smooth fluid way of playing, where notes are perceived to flow into each other .

I am not convinced Taylor is not playing either the rhythm guitar or the outro solo on Luxury .Particularly the rhythm guitar does not sound like Keith.

Why? The two rhythm guitars (the riff guitar and the syncopated one) are both in open G. The solo guitar has no vibrato, nor any phrasing that resembles Taylor (rather classic Keith).
Where is the vibrato on the Dance Little Sister solo? Or Taylor’s solo on Traveling Man?

There were to release the first Basic Version of IORR ...Mick & Ronnie at the Wick December 1973 other from Munich, Munichland February 1974, Fast talking, Slow walking and some alternate Versions!

Musicland Studios Munich (sound engineer Reinhold Mack): "So out of eight recording phases, only the two long-playing records 'It's Only Rock'n'Roll' and 'Black And Blue' came out. 'That's the way they worked,' says Mack: 'We go into the studio and then we play to the hilt'. During the trial and error he recorded everything, at the end of one session he had 200 tapes, each weighing five kilos: a ton of Stones. 'They already had brilliant moments,' he thinks. But was there a perfect take? 'No, none at all' - to Mack's taste." - [iorr.org] .

It's all over Dance Little Sister, with and without the tremolo arm smiling smiley

On a more serious note, listen closely when phrasings/runs end, and the amount of movement and sustain in Taylor's tone. Then listen to Luxury, Time Waits For No One (the Dm/Am/F/C-part where Keith plays lead) or Ain't To Proud To Beg. Very different styles/techniques.

it mystifies me that in the last 2/3 tours especially Mick hasn't resurrected Fingerprint File....kind of timely considering all the talk about deep state BS in the USA.

Not their strongest set of songs.

My version, using the Tattoo You 'fast side/slow side' gambit:

Side 1
If You Can't Rock me
Ain't Too Proud To Beg
It's Only Rock and Roll
Luxury
Dance Little Sister

Side 2
Time Waits for No One
Through the Lonely Nights
Till The Next Goodbye
Fast Talking, Slow Walking
Fingerprint File

Right. The solo which confused me the most was Fast Talking Slow Walking. Sounds like aspects of both of them, but I've settled on KR. How about you?

Totally different things there max.

Vibrato is a deliberate wobble in the pitch of a note ...

whereas Legato refers to a smooth fluid way of playing, where notes are perceived to flow into each other .

Cheers spud! I got confused as I see Taylor as a great user of legato phrasings, his playing is so amazingly fluid and the only "proper" user of legato in my Rock n Roll world. I always remove the tremolo arm on my strats and never use it on my trusty old 355 hence my ignorance smileys with beer

I am a layperson when it comes to distinguishing guitar players. You say Taylor didn’t play one of the rhythm guitars on Luxury. How is that distinctly Keith as compared to the rhythm guitars on Bitch Star and Star and Live With Me which Taylor plays.

Right. The solo which confused me the most was Fast Talking Slow Walking. Sounds like aspects of both of them, but I've settled on KR. How about you?

Definitely Keith. There are a couple of runs in there, as well as some «playing with the chord changes», but it sounds like Keith, imo.
I am a layperson when it comes to distinguishing guitar players. You say Taylor didn’t play one of the rhythm guitars on Luxury. How is that distinctly Keith as compared to the rhythm guitars on Bitch Star and Star and Live With Me which Taylor plays.

1) I think it was recorded when he was "sick" and missed the first Munich sessions

2) It sounds like there are only two guitars; one is the main rhythm and the other is a secondary rhythm that transitions to lead. Both of them sound like KR to me.

Bitch, Star Star, and Live With Me sound like MT to me, plus he played those parts live. The extended version of Bitch really showcases MT's rhythm playing.

There is one note in particular with some heavy vibrato, but it might be a byproduct of the Leslie/Hi Fli.

The new liner notes have MT on "guitar", so maybe he plays the acoustic. Then again, they have Hopkins on piano and it sounds like Preston to me. confused smiley

One of my favourite Stones albums, definitely.

The songs that some people call "filler" are probably better than the best songs of the latter day albums. For me, the only later album that tops IORR is TY, maybe because they are a little bit alike. Critics called TY at the time "a rather oldfashioned Stones record, again", after the more updated sounding ER and SG.

I have never understood why IORR is so disrespected.

IORR, the single, is brilliant. It swings...gradually at first, and then relentlessly by the time it gets to its outro.

I will only add two more things to this celebration of one of the Stones' most unappreciated tracks:

1. It is arguably the greatest rock and roll song ever written about rock and roll. (The worst, in my opinion? "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me," by B. Joel.)

2. Who can forget the first time they ever saw the video (before "videos" were even a thing)? The androgynous lead singer, who pulled it off without the excessive glam rock campiness and make-up that so many others of that era leveraged to distraction? That single shock of blond in the dark hair of the cadaverous guitarist with the dead tooth? The drummer slowly drowning in the bubbles but who refused to stop playing and save himself? Do you remember the first time you saw that? Full-out nasty, uncomplicated rock and roll, in the most playful setting, played by a bunch of characters who resembled no one you had ever met, and who clearly did not take themselves or anything else seriously.
