OT - RIP - Pete Rose - MLB (Baseball) All Time Hits Leader

By HILLEL ITALIE

NEW YORK (AP) — Pete Rose, baseball’s career hits leader and fallen idol who undermined his historic achievements and Hall of Fame dreams by gambling on the game he loved and once embodied, has died. He was 83.

Stephanie Wheatley, a spokesperson for Clark County in Nevada, confirmed on behalf of the medical examiner that Rose died Monday. Wheatley said his cause and manner of death had not yet been determined.

For fans who came of age in the 1960s and ‘70s, no player was more exciting than the Cincinnati Reds’ No. 14, “Charlie Hustle,” the brash superstar with the shaggy hair, puggish nose and muscular forearms. At the dawn of artificial surfaces, divisional play and free agency, Rose was old school, a conscious, dirt-stained throwback to baseball’s early days. Millions could never forget him crouched and scowling at the plate, running full speed to first even after drawing a walk, or sprinting for the next base and diving headfirst into the bag.

A 17-time All-Star, the switch-hitting Rose played on three World Series winners. He was the National League MVP in 1973 and World Series MVP two years later. He holds the major league record for games played (3,562) and plate appearances (15,890) and the NL record for the longest hitting streak (44). He was the leadoff man for one of baseball’s most formidable lineups with the Reds’ championship teams of 1975 and 1976, with teammates that included Hall of Famers Johnny Bench, Tony Perez and Joe Morgan.

..................I am not a sports guy, but did they ever let him back in the game?., or in the Hall of Fame?............I am taking a long-shot, but wouldn't you think with today's technology,90% of today's top players bet; or help friends bet; with inside odds?

You may well be right...and in the context of many sports around the world.

I suspect the rule is not so much " don't do it !" as "don't get caught ! "

Pete deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. It's a travesty Major League Baseball let him die without inducting him.
Modern sports all have some link to gambling these days.
And I think there's a mistake in the obit. I think Wee Willie Keeler has the NL record for longest hitting streak. Joe DiMaggio has the overall and AL record.

MLB is a joke and I haven’t followed it closely since the strike of ‘94. Too many games, too many teams in the playoffs, outright cheaters don’t get punished (Astros World Series)

That said, RIP Pete Rose. Should be in the hall of fame for play alone. They made him a martyr because of his gambling addiction and he never bet against his own team. How many schmucks are legally betting today?

I believe he admitted to betting on his own team, but supposedly always to win. (Still a problem given he was manager and could make decisions to put the health of his players at risk in the hopes of winning a game and therefore a bet).
Regardless, I believe he served his time and should have been reinstated.
Nobody loved baseball more than Pete Rose. And few were better than him at playing it.

Seeing the Stones at Riverfront Stadium for the Steel Wheels tour, the scenery of the stadium and Pete Rose Way was unforgettable.
What a beautiful stadium.

You are correct. Editing my post for accuracy.

IMO PEDs and outright cheating are worse but alas

For baseball watchers today, Rose IS one of the all time greats in a class with Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Ty Cobb, Hank Aaron, etc...I was in Cincinnati for work meetings when he broke the record. Management at the offices had tickets but knowing it was the hottest ticket in sports I decided to listen on the radio instead.

Wee Willie was for years recognized as having the record at 44 games. When Joe was on his 56-game streak, the number to beat was 44. Even when Pete was on his streak, he was said to have tied Wee Willie at 44, as I recall from my childhood.
But apparently Wee Willie got a hit in the final game of the previous season, raising his total to 45 because his 44 streak was from the start of the season.
Not sure when MLB started recognizing that extra game, but all their lists have him at 45 now.

It was a far different time then ... now MLB promotes gambling - gambling sites are advertising their odds within the game, announcers are even stating the gambling sites and stating the odds. So it was a travesty that they never changed that ruling and let Pete Rose in while he was still alive.

Exactly! What hypocrisy!

He deserves a place in the Hall of Fame. A plaque could be put up noting his gambling and banning for the same, but as a baseball player, he was one of the greatest. As for baseball itself, I haven't watched it since the glory days of the Baltimore Orioles and manager the late Earl Weaver.

I was not a Reds fan but I loved watching him play. The intensity was unmatched. Got to see him play as an Expo and Philly but never as a Red, which I regret. Also have an autographed ball packed away someplace. Like Santo, a travesty he never got in the hall in his lifetime. Pete, you were a hall of famer in my book!
RIP Charlie Hustle.

Here is a VERY passionate take by Steven A. Smith, Shannon Sharpe and Chris "Mad Dog" Russo on the ESPN show First Take about Pete Rose being banned from the HOF after the announcement of his passing:

Ha ha.

If Charlie Watts was a MLB player:

162 games of standing around for whut, maybe a shot at a best of seven in the "world" series? Bloody 'ell, they don't even play any other leagues. That's just a sham.
