LONDON (AP) — Maggie Smith, the masterful, scene-stealing actor who won an Oscar for the 1969 film “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” and gained new fans in the 21st century as the dowager Countess of Grantham in “ Downton Abbey” and Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films, died Friday. She was 89.

She was awesome. Excellent actress.

I first saw her in the Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, she had amazing longevity as an actress. And was super-cool till the very end.

She was also wonderful in Alan Bennett's The Lady in the Van.

Those are performances for which she should be remembered, rather than the Downton/Potter ones.

My mom took me to see The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie when it was first released in 1969. It was one of her all-time favorite movies. I still think of her whenever I hear Rod McKuen's song "Jean."

“Assassin! Assassin!” — Miss Brodie’s accusing cry in the end has left a lasting impression in me after all these years. A poignant film and a great performance.

RIP actress extraordinaire.

Maggie Smith was a wonderful actress -RIP.

She was like everybody's extremely fearsome but much beloved great auntie.

She will be sadly missed .
