Sad sad news. He was one of the greatest in blues. So many musicians has him to thank for a lot. Saw him three times in Malmö Sweden, and met him in 2015. Sweet man. All love to John and his family. Rest in peace.

I am quite sure that I am not the only one here, but I "discovered" him because I wanted MORE Mick Taylor and soon became a fan.

There is an episode that for me summarizes all his love for the blues.

Concert in the 80s with MT. Can'r remember which, but it was filmed. I must have it on some old VHS.

Long solo by MT. At a certain point Taylor appeared to have lost his way in an adventurous excursion in some strange mode and you could read in Mayall's puzzled look "and now, how is he getting out of it?". A second later Taylor takes the solo home with one of his best licks and you can see Mayall smile with closed eyes as to say "well done my boy!"

Shall play Crusade and open a bottle in his honor!

C

In the late '90's I went online and met Stones/Taylor collectors and through someone else met a guy in the Bay area who recorded all those '82-'84 Bay area Bluesbreakers shows with Taylor. No one had heard those tapes. He also partially recorded Taylor's Sway solo with Carla Olson. Partially because he looked down and much to his horror saw that the pause button was on. He once had to leave the room when an angry Albert King saw him recording. Anyway, those Mayall/Taylor recordings are gems and an intimate joy to listen to. The recorder has since passed away. He was a character and a BIG Taylor fan.

What a long and inspirational life he lived. I was fortunate to see him twice on the Turning Point tour in 1969. He inspired me to learn to play the blues harp. RIP John Mayall and thank you for the blues!

Made a beeline for Mayall after I realized Mick T greatness as a Stone, as seems to be a pattern. Hope we hear from Mick T soon and god rest your soul John!

Very sad news. But he had a great life, 90, what an age for an icon as John.
His contribution to the Blues and indirectly to rock 'n' roll can never be underestimated!

RIP John.

A man who really loved the Blues

...and a man who nurtured and gave a kick start to so many great musicians.

Eric Clapton's heartfelt tribute. Kinda touching.

Clapton looks surprisingly frail. Is it because I have not seen him for quite some time? He does talk about death and seeing Mayall later.
His apology to Mayall for all the drinking and womanizing was sort of unexpected.
It is a heartfelt tribute indeed. Very nice of him to go online and say goodbye to his mentor. Perhaps some of Clapton's younger fans will dig deeper into Mayall's huge catalogue of albums after seeing this humble and true tribute.

It must difficult to deal with losing so many fellow musicians and he seems greatly affected by the loss of Mayall. Clapton organized one of the most beautiful tribute shows ever. It was for George Harrison. He put together another tribute show for Jeff Beck. He was also there to say goodbye to Ginger Baker and wrote a song for Jack Bruce.

Putting these shows on is tremendous work and I would be surprised if he would do another one, perhaps for Mayall. I am sure he would if he could do it physically and mentally.

Sometimes I wonder who would do a tribute show like that for Clapton when he is gone. Concert For George is one of my favorite gigs.

I cannot remember the last time Mick Taylor used social media to pay tribute to a fallen hero. Keef (Jane Rose) does use social media and he could have said a few words but I think Keef and Mayall were two very different characters. Did the two socialize back in the days? I doubt it.

Mayall was the most dedicated person to blues. He was a very firm band leader. He was in control of every little detail. He was very conscious of what he was doing. A clear-minded, professional artist, one of the purest of all. It did not matter for him how big the venue was and if it was a small or a big city. He would play just about anywhere as long as he was invited. He put on his sandals and a sleeveless shirt and did the gig as if his life depended on it. I thought his tour deserved the name 'Never Ending Tour' more than Dylan's.
Around fans, he acted as if he was an average bloke. He never said 'no' when he had been asked to sign a CD cover or an LP. He always had a few nice words to people who approached him. Yes, he could be moody and grumpy at times but who could not?
He will be greatly missed but his music remains with us.

In 2007, the Stones played Budapest (20th). Mayall played a city just outside of Budapest the day after the Stones concert (21st). By the way, during that tour in 2007, Mayall did 23 gigs in 24 days all at different locations. I had the contacts (promoters) and could have tried to see if they were interested in a meeting but I never got around to making the calls. I ran into Bernard and did mention it to him but I was pretty sure he did not want to get involved in anything like this. The meeting never happened. I am quite certain Jagger did not know Mayall was in town. I do wonder... would they have met him had they known Mayall was also close by? (The Stones stayed for almost a week in Budapest.)

Not everyone needs to respond in public or in social media. We need tor respect that. Plus, MT is not the kind of person who shows himself on socia media channel to talk about former band mates.

Poor Green. Sounds aged well beyond his years and I suppose that makes sense considering the tribulations he faced. I always wish he made an appearance on Back to the Roots.

I saw him one time at a venue in NY north of Niagara Falls called Artpark. I believe it was in the mid 90's.

Headlining the bill was Buddy Guy and if I remember correctly Irma Thomas was the opener.

RIP John Mayall.
