OT: Jack White's surprise free new album 2024

Jack White - No Name

Hopefully that link works.

It seems that on Friday July 19, 2024, Jack White released a new album that's been dubbed "No Name" by including a free vinyl copy with any purchase from his three Third Man record stores. There are 13 tracks with no track listing, so currently all songs are untitled. The rip is linked above. Apparently the rips are okayed by Jack as long as we "tell seven friends."

I've given it one listen so far and liked it. It's heavy guitar with some punk and garage rock. I'm about to give it another spin.

Jack White - No Name

Here are my track by track reactions for my second and third listens through the album.

I feel there's some Led Zeppelin and a bit of AC/DC influence on this album. Overall it's good and rocking, with no ballads or slow tunes.

(These are my own song titles, as of this writing the songs are officially untitled.)

1. You're Gonna Find Out - It's okay, midtempo heavy metal with prominent drums and some progressive changes and a catchy little melody. Not groundbreaking, and not immediately among my favorites on the album, but it's solid meat and potatoes heavy rock.

2. God On Command - Really good, driving heavy rock. You can tell he's getting off on his music here. A highlight.

3. Feeling Right Now - Grungeish pop hard rock with a good sharp hook and catchy riff. Very good, could be a single. Highlight.

4. Much Too Much - Led Zep feeling built around a mellow blues groove, but it also builds with an intense guitar solo. It’s good. I enjoyed it more the second listen.

5. Dear Friend - Jack White’s talking evangelical rap. Awesome, I really enjoyed this track. Jack was into it. A highlight for me, maybe my third favorite song on the album.

6. Bummin’ Out - Some high energy punk. I'm a sucker for a fast tempo. More like this please. A big highlight, this might be my favorite song on the album.

7. What You Know - Really good, the overall songwriting sounds more focused and polished here than on some of the other tracks. Normally I think this would be a contender for a single. A highlight.

8. Tonight Was A Long Time Ago - Big riff and drums sounds very AC/DC inspired. It's solid enough and maybe it will grow on me in the future. I'm not really feeling it right now, though. Songwriting isn't as strong here as it is on other tracks.

9. What's Underground - Fun, experimental slide guitar blues rock Led Zeppelin feel with a little guitar riff hook that sounds right out of a ‘70’s kid's show. It's funny because the little melody is oddly cute. How can you not like it? Jack is into it. Another very enjoyable highlight in my book.

10. Number One With A Bullet - More punkish/new wave, a bit of a different sound. I love it, a highlight. Maybe my second favorite off the album.

11. Comin’ Alive - I guess you could call this a dance song? Probably not. Anyway, it's a pretty cool groove rocked well. While not near the top of my favorites here, I like it a lot.

12. Make You Miss Me - Doing the garage rock thing, and I appreciate that Jack is throwing a lot of ideas against the wall. I’m not crazy about it. The songwriting is a little scattered and unfocused in my opinion.

13. How Do You Feel? - Very Led Zep inspired song. While not a standout track for me, he's definitely giving it all. Maybe it will grow on me.

While I don't necessarily agree with all jahisnotdead's descriptions, I absolutely love this album. I don't live near any of the stores so couldn't get the vinyl that way, and wasn't one of the random members of the subscription service to get one in the mail, but until a way to listen to it on vinyl comes along I am going to keep pumping this rip!

It's so JW. He hasn't said anything about the album, done no promo whatsoever, it doesn't have a name and neither do the tracks (so people have been inventing titles), the whole thing is word of mouth and fan to fan. We don't know if a wide release is coming, when, or in what format. It's insane. I love it.

I live 20 minutes from third man records in Nashville. I didn’t hear about it till the store was already closed unfortunately. I’ve seen him at Bob Dylan shows a few times. I saw death from above 1979 at third man records and saw Jack White in the crowd. Later on that night, Jack White, the members of DFA 1979 and Mick Jagger went bowling. I didn’t see Mick Jagger at the show. He probably wasn’t in the crowd, as I would’ve noticed because it’s a tiny room.

As for the new record, it’s spectacular! Rock will not die as long as shit like this keeps coming out. Album of the year so far for me (over Pearl Jam and High on Fire).

I saw Mick in the crowd at that show, he came out with Jack from backstage and watched about a song and a half (in the VIP area behind the rope). He later walked through the shop where we were all in line to buy our black and blue vinyl records of the show, and I had to lean back so he could get out of the door, haha.

Nice! DFA 1979 put on a raucous show. Cool you were there. Sucks I missed Mick. It’s ok though, I flashed him my man chest in Pit B in Atlanta. He smiled and didn’t miss a beat. It was a fun moment.

I was 5-10 ft from the front rail, way to the right (about 1/2 way down the wing) where the crowd was thin, near the guy who passed out, if you noticed that incident. Wonder how many other shows we’ve attended together.

For me the great thing about the album (other than the fact that it's all rock) is that it seems to reward relistens. Listening to tracks 6 and 9 last night, I was actually feeling euphoria. And imho whenever he does that very high vocal squeak that he does on 2 or 3 tracks, i think that's when he's really getting a 10/10 buzz from his music. It's pretty cool hearing someone record and be so thoroughly "into it."

Probably a lot! I’ve been to a bunch of shows in Nashville. I was in the center of the front rail in Atlanta.

It sounds like JW is hinting at his touring band, so we may get an announcement of a tour any day. I can’t wait to hear these new songs live, I bet they’ll slap!
