I'll second that

The GYYO version is even worse : it's very sweet and tender... the aural equivalent of a paedophile giving candy to a little girl to lure her into getting in his house.
(sorry Mick!).

Re Undercover... Mick was turning 40 and he obviously pretty pissed off by the state of the world. Hence the dark lyrics of most songs on UC. "Must Be Hell" has dark lyrics.
The main problem with UC is the music that goes with the dark lyrics is pretty light and mundane.

This is a great thread and it reminds us of how truly subversive the RS's lyrics are, especially so at the beginning when it was not the norm at all.

Very hard to choose the darkest, but I remember how I was taken aback at the misogyny when I first heard Stupid Girl, Under My Thumb and Spider and the Fly on their early recordings.

It makes me think that the conservative reaction to them had some justification.

Also, we're not quite sure if the narrator is a naive protagonist in a seedy part of London or a much more sinister character playing a part. A truly twisted song.
