Glad to see Miss You there again. It's one of their best and most fun songs live.

Went to the show last night. They were great! Played great and sounded great. If you weren’t there. You have no reason to criticize.

You know, the keyboard police here don't get that.

Keith doing 3 songs is a sign. They dont just change this because keith want to.

And this.

Something happened, clearly, to make for this change so suddenly.

You don't just "drop" a showstopper like SSoH from the setlist - they thought enough of it to make it the opening encore song for the first number of shows and then inexplicably drop it, reducing the encore to one song and adding a Keith number.

Any number of explanations, these the likeliest:

1. Mick's voice
2. Mick needs more of a break - ie physical toll of the show.
3. Didn't like the crowd reaction to SSoH/Chanel oversinging.
4. Keith wants more stage time.
5. No issue, they just wanted to change it up.

Argument #1 - Mick's voice "seems" fine, but perhaps there is an underlying issue and he's trying to preserve it for the entire tour? If MJ's voice goes, they are cancelling shows and they'll be hard to reschedule. His voice seems fine, but he's a professional and may just be "managing" a problem well.

For argument #2 - so they add a Keith song, but why drop SSoH, they could have dropped any other tune, and why only one encore song? With the extra Keith song Mick's stagetime would still roughly the same dropping any other song in lieu of dropping SSoH.

Argument #3 - crowds I've seen loved the tune, I don't think this is the problem. Chanel is "aggressive" on vocals, but even if Mick didn't like that, a conversation with her would probably be the outcome, not simply dropping the song.

Argument #4 - This seems highly unlikely. Keith is insisting on a 3rd song, after all this time this seems implausible, and even if this were the case, they could just add that 3rd song, rather than dropping SSoH.

Argument #5 - they do change up a few songs on the show, but while we all like a Keith number or two, 3 out of 19 songs is a big chunk and removing an encore number and reducing it to one song seems too major a move to happen just to "change it up"...this to me is the unlikeliest scenario.

So...I read the show is now under 2 hours. This seems like they are tapering it on purpose, which in the absence of any other information makes it seem like it's Mick's voice. We've all marvelled at how good his voice sounds, especially at his age and compared to his contemporaries. He's careful which is largely good so we're even able to get shows of this quality, but he's had issues with his voice in the past so this isn't new territory.

Keeping fingers crossed for remainder of the tour, whatever the issue may be.

Seriously, Treacle a well thought out and well communicated explanation. I think Chicago Show #1 is key. It comes after a full week off. If Keith's 3 song set and the absence of Sweet Sounds remain at Chicago 1, then I say that is how the tour will finish out. I do find the one song encode as a bit odd.

6. It wasn't quite "polished" enough yet live.

The three shows I was at where it was performed, it was apparent the kinks hadn't quite been worked out on this live. The outro just didn't seem to work... Loved it, but it got a little lost winding down. I think it needed just a little more tinkering with, but with the tour underway, no time to get back to rehearsal mode with it perhaps.

Fingers also crossed it makes a return, it was a real highlight of the shows for me.

How many shows did Keith do one song? 3 or 4? Perhaps he's just catching up so that he gets 2 songs/show for the whole tour. Wouldn't be surprised if that's writtin in the contracts.

That could be the case. Everyone wanted more than one Keith song now three has upset the balance. It's almost like a Wino's mini set with Jordan on the drums.

This tour has 6 more shows than the last 3-4 tours, I think Mick is regulating the songs he sings each night and not lose his voice and have to cancel a show at a very high cost due to the age of the members and the whole insurance thing.

Sweet Sounds is the ideal song to cut, it is at the end of the show, the band really believed that they had a classic on their hands but the song went completely unnoticed by the general public and it doesn't work live either so it was excluded, it doesn't surprise me.

At the end of the day the band is touring with a new album that left the charts 6 months ago and the audience that goes to see them puts Hot Rocks on the charts week after week, so the band went on autopilot until the end of the tour.

My pennies worth, Micks saving his voice and body, pacing himself so that voice and body lasts to the end of the tour.

Crowd reaction to Keith singing 3 songs sounds positive, he keeps the momentum going and is giving his friend Mick a well earned rest for 15 minutes.

Hope we get BTMMR next week.

While this is true, it should be noted that no matter how much momentum the Stones generated for the new album, they weren’t doing themselves any favors by hibernating for the fall and winter of 2023-24. That was a highly unusual thing to do; they typically hit the road almost simultaneously — and sometimes even slightly before — the release of a new album.

There is no such "contract" that Keith does so many songs. It's just something they agree upon and talk about in rehearsals, or when Chuck & Mick are making up the setlist. 90% of the people in the audience would prefer it if Keith would do only one song, "Happy".

Totally agree. I love this album - but the delay between the release and the tour is odd. HD is my favorite Stones’ album since Some Girls.

Yeah, it seems like they wanted to release it in time for Christmas maybe to enhance sales and hoped the promo and hype could last 6 months.

Oh well, never too old to learn something new!

Yes, a decision was made. Doesn't it always come suddenly when a number is dropped ? Maybe it became too much after Gimme Shelter and Midnight Rambler. Keith going from 1 to 3 tracks does raise some speculations about Mick pacing himself.

I mentioned this in the setlist thread, but I find it interesting that the band is NOT doing ballads right now. No SSOH or the other usuals. They've been opting for two rockers or two acoustic numbers instead of the BOB, WH, Angie, etc. Seems like it's either a vocal thing or a show-momentum thing, but the inclusion of three keef numbers makes me think it's something to do with Mick.

I think Mick's voice is clearly not in the best shape it can be since the Orlando show. You can hear it when you listen to parts of songs where he can still deliver powerful vocals but not always does. For example in Sympathy when he sings the refrain, much more power in that audible until after Boston. At the moment he just sings through it and it sometimes almost sounds like he's glad to be through it at the end.

Re: Cleveland OH USA live updates - Saturday June 15, 2024 - The Rolling Stones Hackney Diamonds Tour
Date: June 17, 2024 03:58

I have not missed a show so far so I will give my take on this.

I don't remember which show it was, but I remember Mick spitting on the stage and grabbing the water bottle more frequently than normal.

My guess is the changes were made due to a voice issue. They dropped Cloud for IORR which has more input from the backup singers and the same for LSTNT.

Three Keith songs follow the same thing as the last arena show in Vegas when Mick was sick. We got three songs.

Dropping Heaven is probably along the same lines. I think if Chanel was overpowering, and Mick didn't like it there would be a conversation to tone it down and not just drop the song.

None of us will probably ever know the real reason unless they come out and tell us, but these are rational speculations.

Let's be Happy that the tour is still going on. They'll have a break coming up and we'll know more after the break.

Horrible timing, yes, but touring where they wanted to (stadiums) wasn't exactly conducive November-March.

Should they've delayed the LP? They could've. Release 4 singles over 6 months until the tour starts... keep things interesting (good songs, too, not SSOH and Mess It Up).

UMG has their plan regardless: 18 months. Mick's probably giggled at that a lot.
