O/T: 2024 Stanley Cup Finals
Posted by: GasLightStreet ()
Date: June 9, 2024 03:44

I grew up an Edmonton fan. The last Canadian team to win the Cup was the Montreal Canadiens in 1993. But Florida has been to the finals twice and have not won.

It's time Florida won.

Game 1 is tonight in Sunrise, FLA.

An ice hockey team from Florida. The world has gone nuts.

I'm a life long Wings fan, despite growing up in central Alberta. I'm pulling for Florida.

Ice hockey belongs to the tropics, there is no hockey culture in Canada. So of course I'll root for Florida - the home of hockey. Even though my favorite North American player, Wayne Gretzky played for the Oilers...

They started in 1993 (thanks to Wayne Gretzky playing in Los Angeles). They aren't new. Tampa has a team too - they've won the Cup three times (out of five times to the finals).

Maybe one day New Orleans will have an NHL team. And... Negril, JA, and...

Barkov vs. McJesus 1-0...

Not that surprising, though. When, arguably, the world's best defensive center confronts the world's best offensive center I would put my money on the former.

Florida does appear to have experience on their side, as this is the 2nd consecutive season they've been to the finals (losing to Vegas last year). I think their tight defense will be enough to contain the Oilers' high-powered offense, but it won't be easy. I see this series going the full 7 games.

Interesting bit of trivia - the Oilers, with 5 Stanley Cups under their belt, were born out of the old World Hockey Association (WHA) in 1972 and are the sole surviving team from that league that still remains in their original location. The WHA tried on 3 separate occasions to put a team in Florida (Miami Screaming Eagles, Florida Breakers and Florida Icegators), none of which actually ever iced a team. So maybe this year will be viewed as "Florida's revenge".....

Panthers had two goals on five shots, and Oilers threw the kitchen, basement, and garage at them and couldn’t score.. As long as they don’t let off that gas this could be an awesome seven game series.. Rooting Oilers on this one, but good hockey is good hockey smiling smiley

I actually do not a favourite here, but to an extent I root for Florida due to 'starbucker'winking smiley nature of North American hockey. Like the bloody only thing is the personal points of an individual star player that matters. I pretty much follow Colorado Avalanche, and I cannot help how much it gets to my nerves how many fans only care how many points McKinnon or Makar has scored (see HFBoards). I haven't seen in anywhere else in the hockey world that the status of some individual players is so high. Elsewhere I see people root for the team, not individual players. I guess it is the money that matters: the superstars are the ones gathering the sort of interest NHL asks for.

Edmonton all the way. It's been over 30 years since a Canadian team won, and that just isn't right.

You have a point there. Due to cap hit or whatever it is they call it, it is not just the case of money. Something has been wrong with Canadian teams. How to build up a winning team. Toronto? Habs? You know, the capitals of hockey world.

Edmonton has scored 18 goals in the last 3 games to force a game 7 tonight in Sunrise, FLA.

If Edmonton wins it will be only the second time in championship history (North America) of sports that have a best of 7 (NHL, NBA and BLcool smiley that a team will have won the championship being down 0-3

The last time was the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs.

Florida dominated in games 1-3.

Edmonton won game 4 8-1!!!!

I've seen plenty of real fans of other Canadian teams say they're pulling for the Oilers. Canucks fans even.

It's not money in totality. Most highly paid athletes lose their edge when they get the big bucks. Jimmy Graham (and Michael Thomas, who is pathetic) of the New Orleans Saints is a perfect example: he got his huge contract and SUCKED. So they traded him.

I'll spare the pasting - look at this list (scroll down a little). 4 of these 25 highest paid players are in the Finals.

McDavid will win Conn Smythe win or lose he has been incredible. If the Oiler win only the 2 time in the history of the NHL a team will have come back from 3 - doughnut to win.

I’m a blow in Canuck’s fan since I came here 16 years ago but personally my take is if you’re gonna be beaten in a Cup tournament it’s better be beaten by the eventual finalist’s or winners, at least you were beaten by the best. I also (with no malice hatred or spite) would always go for a Canadian team I hated over an American team, I would want to see a Canadian team win even though it’s not my team. I won’t be happy for the Oilers, but I’d at least know some part of Canada was celebrating.

Unless you’re born into a team and it’s by virtue of where you live you can’t comment. My above take is that of a blow in. If I was born and raised here I might have good reason to be screaming for a team from Florida. I’m watching the Euros at the minute and despairing at Scotlands run and delighted at England’s poor run and celebrating goals against them. I don’t hate English people, but it’s built in to me to not want them to succeed at sport. If I grew up in Van I’d likely have a similar feeling for the Oilers.

I'm a Canadian who isn't really into hockey so I'm watching my first full hockey game of the year, tonight.
I've always had a soft spot for Edmonton as I was a kid during Gretzky's Edmonton heyday.
With no Canadian team having won the Cup since 1993, there are likely a lot of hosers like me tuning in.

Would be epic if this one goes into overtime.
