25 Years since Shepherds Bush Empire show

Just realised this today (8th). It is hard to believe it's 25 years since this one-off thank you for waiting show to UK fans following postponement of the 1998 shows.
Long over due for an official release!

Fantastic show with a great set list. I actually think it’s a bit underrated compared to the 1995 and 2002 shows.

I was there.... Cannot believe it was 25 years ago. I remember that the standing area in front of the stage was jam packed, and The Stones seemed to take a long time coming on, but when they finally opened the show with "Shattered" the place exploded.

Crikey! I too was there. Although I can't recall it being promoted as a thank you show for the postponement. (Don't forget that the postponement was to enable their thoroughly distasteful tax affairs to not be disrupted.)

The vibe outside while we waited to go in was great - hundreds of us in a queue together. Sounds awful, but was nice.

The 'official' cars all had 'The Empire Strikes Back' stickers on the windscreen - presumably so the rich and famous could find them when they were loading up in central London.

I was more than happy to stand in the relatively empty space from the middle of the stalls to the back. The front was really really crowded. That meant I could chat with friends without worrying about losing my spot. I could also guard a cache of souvenirs bought by friends who were afraid of losing them down the front.

Seeing The Rolling Stones (again) in a (relatively) small venue is a truly wonderful experience.

I am not a Sheryl Crowe fan. (Wasn't she going out with Lance Armstrong at about that time?)

Getting a bus back to the hotel in central London was a bit of a pain. Long queues, few buses. But my pal and I had an interesting chat with someone who had arrived in an 'official' car and was trying very hard to get back to their companion in the band's hotel.

The Stones were in great shape in 1999 - Ronnie Wood had some problems, but the band was on fire. The Shepherds Bush gig got an horrible review in the NME back then. I was young and was very annoyed because of that. I saw the Stones in Stuttgart and Cologne that year,in the heat and in the driving rain. Great memories from that time.

Absolutely bonkers set list!

Moon Is Up! Melody! Brand New Car! I Got The Blues! Some Girls!

Quite astounding, really, for a band in the midst of a stadium tour for BRIDGES and they pull those out!

And open with Shattered!

The rest of the songs were the usual at the time. They only went so far off. Just like in 1995 at a few club shows.

This was my new girlfriend's first ever Stones gig. We were offered £1500 for the ticket and she was sorely tempted (we were hard up students) but she saw sense. We're still together.

I vividly remember a) it being packed b) being so excited they opened with Shattered and c) Mick messing up one of the lines of Melody and Keith pissing himself laughing.

Sang I Got The Blues all the way home.

Ronnie was still drinking heavily, what, 4 or 5 Guinness when he woke up (not exactly a getting plowed beer) but... his vodka intake, wot, crawling under tables... yeah, he had some issues. But was he any worse than 1981-82? Doesn't sound like it in the video or any other recordings from that era.

There's some serious plink plonk going on during Respectable...

Really rotten version of Some Girls. Wow. Perhaps it's what inspired them to play it on the NO SECURITY tour.

From memory, I think that's the best one. Is it Rattlesnake?

Your post made me watch the video, absolute awesomeness!

This I'd definitely buy in an official release.

The tour had already been in progress since January, Some Girls was a regular on it and was consistently awesome. The No Security tour is excellent and supremely underrated in that I feel it gets overshadowed by the vaster scope of the Licks Tour.

No Security is probably the best post-Wyman tour. Keith and Ronnie were pretty much on fire throughout, especially Keith who was probably coming to the end of his last real peak before he adjust his playing to his arthritis and other maladies.

Licks was great overall, but going into 2003 the band seemed a bit tired towards the end of the trek. 2002 was brilliant and diverse, but after awhile a formula developed and you essentially knew what songs were gonna be played in stadiums, theatres, etc. That’s not to diss the tour - it was wonderful, and that Fall 2002 trek is probably the last time the Stones could conceivably be argued as the “greatest rock and roll band in the world” without using “for their age” qualifiers.

On No Security, they were lean, mean and ready to rock. After the bombast of Babylon, it was more ‘back to basics,’ and the band looked and sounded cool, comfortable, and confident.

Also, I kind of prefer the rotation of rarities to Licks - Shine a Light, Get Off of My Cloud, Memory Motel, Live with Me, Respectable, Shine a Light, Undercover, Just My Imagination, Some Girls, You Got the Silver all being in rotation was just a spectacular thing to experience, I’m sure.

That energy translated to the warhorses, too, and it was a bold move at that time to drop Satisfaction. Brown Sugar and Sympathy were beasts that your.

There have been many sublime moments, songs and full performances since then, but they haven’t sound quite as punchy and lean as they sounded on NS. Just my two cents.

I wasn’t there. I considered but narrowly missed out the event unfortunately.

I flew over from Japan to catch the following two Wembley shows (June 11-12) but couldn’t make it to the Shepherd’s Bush gig due to the timing and logistics to my regret.
To add insult to injury, my first ever Stones shows on their home turf (and at the sacred old Wembley) were not entirely up to my expectation. With the news from Shepherd’s Bush on my mind, I hoped them to include a couple of deep cuts at Wembley, like they picked up Some Girls in Imst, Austria, the tour opener. They didn’t.
Another of my expectation was that the shows might be an extension of the No Security N.A. tour early in the year, or a possible combination of the B2B and NS tours in content. They weren’t. As it turned out, what I got at Wembley was a lesser version of the B2B Japan tour 1998 of which I caught 5 out of 6 shows — e.g. the identical song selections on the B-stage between two nights, Satisfaction-only encore (YCAGWW being dropped, like the B2B European tour the previous year).
I remember I left the stadium feeling rather anticlimactic.

Sometime after, I read on the internet that someone quoted her friend who attended both Shepherd’s Bush and Wembley shows telling her that the latter was much better than the former. I wondered if he was a casual fan.

But, with respect, the greatness of a show cannot be just up to the set list or can it? Maybe I have a casual fan mindset, but I rather take them playing damn well whatever than struggling whatever. The Singer Not The Song'.

If the playing is stellar enough to make up for a mundane setlist, yes. I experienced a few myself. It’s not always the case, though.

I was in London on business that week and able to attend the SBE show. Also enjoyed Cheryl Crow opening and joining the band for HTW. The next day I had to leave so no Wembley shows for me. But, earlier that Spring I did catch 6 No Security shows. SBE was quite loose and ragged at times compared to NS when they were in top form.

I was fortunate enough to know Michael Cohl over the years, and every tour he always hooked me up with tickets to club shows. This was one of them, but I'll be honest, I was not impressed by Shepherd's Bush.

I think Mick and Keith had some kind of squabble and it seemed like they weren't getting along. I also believe that they'd taken some nose candy , because both were acting VERY WEIRD , wiping their noses often (it was June!!]

I was on the floor, saw lots of famous faces , but I don't think it was anywhere near as exciting as the Astoria show or The Point theatre either. cheers.

O - the memories ! I fondly recall queueing up (wherever the hell it was in central London, can't remember right now, it was either TOWER RECORDS or HMV) with my mate Eric to get tickets for this show, and in due course - it didn't disappoint in the slightest. Have the bootleg, that version of SOME GIRLS is scorching ! Definitely due for an official release.

Interesting. Someone tells us that, in a nutshell, it wasn’t that good.
I heard back in time that Astoria 2003 wasn’t good, either.

Fans get excited just because it is a small gig. However.
Maybe…maybe every club/theatre show in the modern Stones age was not top notch. Then someone comments, “You had to be there.”

Who can prove the true value of an event?

It was Tower Records on Picadilly Circus. I had been waiting outside Virgin on Oxford Street, on the basis of that was where the 95 Brixton tickets had been sold from. Gutted when we heard it was Tower! Groups of random strangers just all jumped into cabs together yelling 'Picadilly as quick as you can!'.
