Best of Voodoo Brew Stew etc.

Is there a best-of, cleaned up, synthesis of all the Voodoo Lounge outtakes?

I was about to prepare one myself, divided in 3 chapters, best alternative versions of the album cuts, best finished songs that didn't make the album, best grooves/jams, but I am quite sure that someone had a similar idea

Voodoo Residue and a couple more titles came later. Great idea though, trim the fat and make one good album.

In 2018 there was 'Voodoo Lounge - The Real Alternate Album', but the comment on Discogs doesn't sound excited - [www.Discogs.com] . DL: [iorr.org] .

I'd put the album songs sung by Keef (always cool stuff) plus a bunch of almost-made-the-final-tracklist outtakes ("You Got It Made" comes to mind) and I'd finish the comp with some cool acoustic stuff (material from "Residue" or disc II of Brew : "Cocaine Blues" or "Make No Mistake").

Voila! winking smiley

You Got It Made - I'm still amazed it's never been released - It's Funny, Make It Now and Ivy League are the best leftovers.

A lot of the other stuff is, like Middle Of The Sea, Zip Mouth, sounds like reaching.

Honest Man is horrible.

All the Keith acoustic stuff, during one overdub for New Faces (no wonder they took forever to finish an album) is fantastic. And, of course, Keith and Ronnie recording backing vocals for You Got It Made is absolutely brilliant.

"It's a tall order for two queers... bwa ha ha ha!"
You get a glimpse of the Keith/Ron alchemy : Keith plays the patient master and Ron plays the dumb obedient pupil (and I'll add : dumb he is not).

Does anyone remember "Possesses Me", a typical KR track. It was cool but it did not have a real potential. Same goes for "You Got Away With Murder".

This is the stuff they should of/could of done for a VL super deluxe. Hopefully it's still a possibility.

Yes. It's absolutely hilarious. I must've had tears in my eyes the first 20 times I listened to it. The screw up, I forget exactly what was said, but Ronnie kept singing while instead of time and Keith said While is forever, time is... something like that.

Which instantly was remembered when I got The Beatles' FREE AS A BIRD with the hilarious This Boy screw ups.

Honest Man is not horrible. It just needs a good bridge part. Like the ”are you scared of me baby…” in Love Is Strong or ”And I need a timeout…” in Tie You Up.

I don't remember reading about tracks that were discarded at the last minute, either in articles or interviews ?

Now it stands to reason that the tracks on VB would have been considered for release at some point given how "polished" they are. Interestingly few of them (only "Hands Off" and "Ivy League" going by memory) "made it" on FFSO, either because others were never there or because the bootlegger didn't want to include existing leaked versions.

You're right. I should have written "strong contenders for the final tracklist imo". When the Brew/Stew boxes came out, I kept thinking they chose the wrong tracks.

Yeah, there are some I like a lot like YGIM and MIN but it's a difficult one, unreleased tracks are going to be more "exciting" given how we got access to them and how "stale" some album tracks can get after too many repeated listenings...a bit like the "new album" syndrome, case in point, ABB. HD seems to have fared a little bit better, being more "memorable" over all, with a few strong songs (like B2cool smiley and some nice "stories" around the album, Macca/Elton/Gaga, etc...anyway I'm rambling ;-)

'Residue' might be the best of the three. It's frustrating to hear the 3 Boxes bc the official album should have been tough. IMO YGMR is kind of a silly song, until you hear the early raw takes on it.
