I think as long as they are charging serious $$ to see them play, I think people have a right to be critical of the content of concerts. I think many people expected more, with the quality of the Hackney Diamonds album, the band would play more of it and celebrate fresh songs at this stage of their career. Reality is they're a huge "brand", not really a band, and not willing to take many risks at this point. Play the warhorses, put money into massive video and stage and merch and appeal to the most broad spectrum of the population that has disposable income. Not sure I would do any different if I were 80 and wanted as little risk is possible for my business. The alternative for fans: don't spend money on it.

A near perfect Seattle Stones show for my daughters first show thumbs up
Arrived to hear Depending on You and Dreamy Skies very clearly for soundcheck, grabbed a couple "Seattle Dogs" (it's a thing) and eventually settled into a very roomy and comfortable Pit B.

Chanel blew my daughter away...and she was mesmerized by Mick of course, but to see her light up when he stopped on the catwalk nearby us right away on SMU, was fantastic. Surpassed her expectations by a long shot, and the new songs were a highlight for her, she genuinely loves the new album, SSOH the highlight of the night for her.. Great night, great first show cool smiley

Cool photo that with the high rise buildings

I remember when the Columbia Center went up. Nice that at least there's a view of the train station and the Smith Tower is still peeking through.

Those still around who haven't yet shouldn't miss the market, as touristy as it is, and a ferry ride or at least the view from Olympic Sculpture Park, say. And I hear the ducks have returned to Drumheller fountain on the UDub campus.

Fantastic backdrop, for sure; and that’s despite the prominence of the ‘Bud Light’ advertisement! That’s not political; it’s just a shite, watery beer!

IMHO, SSOH in no way compares to Midnight Rambler. I'd trade in a second.

I agree but the only way you can fit SSOH into the show is to drop Rambler or Miss You and we all know Mick won't drop Miss You.
I'm sure Rambler will be back if Mick thinks he's fit enough to perform it ?.

Here is the setlist from San Diego Sports Arena in 2002. Just 21 songs but look at the song selection. Just two more than this tour. NO MISS YOU! BTW everything fit in quite nicely. Leave out IORR and YGMR and insert a couple new songs. It would be a winner in 2024.

01 - Street Fighting Man
02 - IORR
03 - If You Can't Rock Me
04 - Don't Stop
05 - Bitch
06 - Love in Vain
07 - Let It Bleed
08 - Monkey Man
09 - Midnight Rambler
10 - Tumbling Dice

(Band introductions and Keith songs)

11 - Slipping Away
12 - Happy

13 - Start Me Up
14 - You Got Me Rocking
15 - Can't You Hear Me Knocking
16 - Honky Tonk Women
(with Sheryl Crow)
17 - Satisfaction

B-Stage
18 - Neighbours
19 - Little Red Rooster
20 - Brown Sugar

Encore:
21 - Jumpin' Jack Flash

Barely 5 pages on a live show. That alone says a lot about the enthusiasm for this tour. Ticket prices are too high for many who know exactly what they're getting. And it seems like there were many empty seats. Seattle was a bad choice.

I was thinking the same, i hope if the Stones do tour again it's arenas and theatres where this music still packs a punch and Mick can concentrate on singing and not waste energy trying to cover these large stadiums.

Judging by cheap pannic sale 30 dollar tickets and I'm guessing ( judging by show time ) a third of tickets unsold, it would appear that not enough people have 350 to 650 dollars to burn for some of the best seats in the house.

At this stage with Mick and Keith's fortune combined at an estimated Billion dollars ( more than 80 year olds have time to spend and plenty to leave to family) do they really need to attempt to make such greedy profit margins.

When i first bought tickets to see the Stones in 1990 tickets for shows often sold out in hours. Similar experience in 1995. You had to be a real fan and wait on the phone for hours hoping by the time your call was answered box office still had tickets.

The Licks Tour was somewhat unique. Yes, they were touring in support of a ‘Greatest Hits’ release, yet, it was their fortieth anniversary as a group, and the set-lists, generally, had a sort-of ‘career retrospective’ feel to them. Factor in the three different show-types they put on - stadium; arena; theatre - and it’s even more apparent. I’m sure it’s their most varied tour, song-selection wise.

Glad your daughter liked it. Taking her to Vancouver? I was walking out with a couple near my age who never had seen the Stones before and were blown away. Were discussing going to Santa Clara and when I mentioned there was a Vancouver show they are now going to do both. They said they really regretted never going before.

I will agree with others here that Seattle was not the best choice.

There were a ton of empty seats.

Another California show would have been a better bet.

Mick thinks Seattle had the best crowd participation by far for the first 5 shows especially on YCAGWYW, then the love for Keith felt so good for his introduction! What a great night, I’m riding on 3 hours of sleep didn’t want the buzz of the night to go away almost pulled an all-nighter so the buzz wouldn’t end.

Mick's being politically correct, we don't have to be. You have to wonder who choose these cities and in that order. Why skip Toronto, Montreal or even Edmonton? Also a bunch of misses in the Northeast. Canadians are always very supportive of the band.

He’s not being political correct to the previous city’s of the tour. I don’t think your statement is true in this case you could tell he was genuinely happy with the crowd participation.

Review: Rolling Stones wield rock ‘n’ roll immortality in Seattle

By Michael Rietmulder
May 16, 2024

Dean Rutz

Concert review

Mick Jagger was on one. The age-defying Rolling Stones frontman was skipping, flying all over the supersized stage at Lumen Field — clapping, stomping, pouting with abandon, a microphone magically finding him right when he needed one.

“I was boooooorrrn in a crossfire hurricane,” Jagger wailed, kick-starting an extra saucy “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” before the encore. Either the Elliott Bay breeze or one of those fans that follow rock stars everywhere they go gently blew through the 80-year-old singer’s hair as his longtime songwriting mate Keith Richards, with the mischievous grin of a guy tossing a match into a powder keg, hammered the snarling riff.

Stepping in for the late, great Charlie Watts, drummer Steve Jordan — who had been precise and perfectly not-too-showy all night — threw some muscle on his kick drum, subtly pushing the band to a new, menacing intensity in the homestretch of their two-hour set Wednesday night in Seattle.

For years (decades, really), every new Rolling Stones tour has spurred the question of whether they’ve “still got it,” to the point of being comedy. (If ever there’s a status change, we’ll let you know.)

The Rolling Stones — now the core trio of Jagger, Richards (80) and longtime guitarist Ronnie Wood (76) — arrived in Seattle with plenty of momentum. The rock icons sounded re-energized on last year’s sterling “Hackney Diamonds,” their first album of originals since 2005’s “A Bigger Bang.” Produced by Andrew Watt, a 33-year-old with a knack for helping rock greats (including Pearl Jam) twice his age rekindle their studio magic, “Hackney Diamonds” is a late-career high and worthy entry to an esteemed catalog for a band that didn’t exactly need to bolster their legacy.

The people-pleasing rock giants are known for playing the hits on tour, but it was no disappointment that three of the new songs slipped into the set list otherwise stuffed with familiar classics.

The first came just a few songs after an engine-purring “Start Me Up” warmed up the elated crowd. “All right, we got a new one for you now,” Jagger teased, something he hasn’t been able to say in a while.

Jagger’s sass on the midtempo “Angry” — the lead single off “Hackney Diamonds” — turned a lover’s wrath into a twirl-together dance party, with at least one young girl, maybe 7 or 8 years old, spinning, shuffling, moving like magnetic Mick in the aisle. With his first proper solo of the night, Richards coolly unfurled a slow-twisting blues bender, more moody than flashy.

Jagger, Richards and Wood were supported by a six-piece backing band that really started cooking on the subsequent “It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll (But I Like It).”

The mid-‘70s highlight was a cheeky retort to critics and anyone taking the band too seriously. Not to contradict Mr. Jagger, but it’s not only rock ‘n’ roll — the genre and attitude the eternally spry frontman and his band have embodied for 60 years. It’s a fountain of youth and dance-all-night spirit that the Stones — whose tour is sponsored by the AARP, an endorsement that seems to come with a self-aware wink (and presumably a big fat check) — and a football stadium filled with fans tapped, if only for two hours on a work night. It’s also a legacy that will outlive everyone in the stadium.

Since their last Seattle gig in 2019, rock’s most indestructible band had their own brush with mortality when Watts died in 2021. There would be no introspective heart-pourings or eulogizing of their late mate on stage (this was a party after all), though Jagger did reflect on their very first local gig, a 25-minute set at the old Seattle Center Coliseum.

“The highlight of the show was when a girl punched a policeman and broke his glasses,” Jagger said, laughing. “I know that’s not going to happen tonight, because [you’re all] much too polite.”

As far as we know, no cops were punched, though security showed incredible patience denying zealous fans’ repeated attempts to sneak into the pit area at the front of the stage. The not-quite-sold-out stadium left a little room for, shall we say, industrious concertgoers to try for help-yourself seating upgrades. Some were more elusive than others.

As he’s known to do onstage, Jagger — an Instagramming traveler about town — shouted out some local cuisine (oysters and salmon) and a few nightlife institutions. “I’m getting thirsty,” he teased after harmonica-wielding disco romper “Miss You.” “I might just see you at the Central Saloon later. Or could I go to Kremwerk?” As of Thursday morning, there seemed to be no indication Jagger actually hit the grunge-era haunt or underground dance music hub, but with their set ending shortly before 11:30 p.m., he would’ve had to hustle.

Perhaps the more meaningful local praise came after a smoky, campfire-by-the-Sound singalong during “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” which finished in a gospel-dashing flourish. “Thank you, Seattle, you sang [expletive] brilliantly. Really good,” Jagger said with a chuckle. “That was the best I’ve heard the audience singing [on this tour]. … I’m not just winding you up.”

Despite the stadium-crowd choir’s booming assistance, the real vocal thunder came during Jagger’s two duets with backing vocalist Chanel Haynes, who came up with late ‘90s gospel group Trin-i-tee 5:7. Haynes’ crystalline force cycloned perfectly with Jagger’s unstrained grit — a quality that’s helped his voice age remarkably well — on a stormy “Gimme Shelter.”

Jagger and Haynes shared another turn in the spotlight, starting the encore with the gospel-tinged “Sweet Sounds of Heaven,” recorded as a duet with Lady Gaga, off “Hackney Diamonds.” Jagger emoted every word like each syllable swelled up from the pit of his stomach before spilling out of his perpetually pursed lips. Haynes eventually joined him on the catwalk for a stomping, clenched-fist crescendo before reveling closer “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” It was somewhat of a gutsy move for a band of the Stones’ pedigree encoring with “Sweet Sounds of Heaven,” a new song. It was even more impressive that said new song packed one of the biggest punches of the night.

Whatever deal with the devil they cut to perform this well for this long, it’s fair to wonder if Wednesday’s show could be the last Seattle stand for the band that’s played here five times this century, counting a 2002 Tacoma Dome date.

If it was, it’s hard to imagine Mick and the boys going out any higher.

Fantastic show. Got skunked with the lucky dips (lower bowl and the lighting tent was fully obstructing our view of most of the stage). We self-upgraded to the rear GA for the opener and then slinked into some seats mid-floor on the right, just as the Stones went on.

Hope everyone had a great time. Now I get to daydream about the Vancouver show for a while.

Sorry, but you are spewing verbal diarrhea. Last night's show was one for the ages, and I did not see one pouty face amongst the 10s of thousands. That show had no right to be so good. It was massive, and while I thought my last Seattle show in 2019 was one of my favourite, last night was even better.

Just complete Stones awesomeness....A BAND that makes the brand.

Iorr sounds weird. Tempo wise a mess. Not a steve song imo

Ronnie on backing vocals is nice though

Totally agree. Charlie was letting the song roll and swing, while Steve is hindering the swing and working against the band.

Had to go back and watch a good version:

Again the IORR reviews are split between people who attended and those who didn't. Just like in Vegas those who went raved about it and those who "attended" via phone have lots of negative nonsense. The show was well attended. Sure there were empty seats but there were 2 to 3 arenas full of people. The band is not doing an arena or club tour. They are doing the set list they choose to do and those attending loved it. Was having lunch before heading to airport and a guy saw us wearing our shirts and asked if we went. He last saw them in 1981 and had low expectations going in. He couldn't stop talking about how amazing the show was. Everyone I came in contact with from the guy working at the hotel to the people on the street all had positives. I guess the place to go if we want negative views on the show is IORR.
