How good will this be as a venue? I've been on holiday to Split and the Dalmatian Coast recently and the Croatian people are lovely.

I think the venue is still not announced.It might be Maksimir stadium.Dunno

Still not announced. Speculations are between Hippodrome and "Maksimir" stadium. Stadium can hold up to 60k people, and hippodrome can hold up to... Well, about a million, if they could sell that many tickets... 
So I hope it is going to be the stadium.... It's definitely more controled enviroment that just a huge plain field...
Split you mentioned, have one of the lovliest and coolest stadiums in Europe, "Poljud", and would be perfect place for a Stones gig, but Split has 4 times less inhabitants than Zagreb, so that's unlikely...
Although, gig will take place in the middle of summer tourist season on the Adriatic coast, so it might not be a bad idea after all...
