The Stones are number 1, no doubt. Second place must be the great Elmore James. Some of his stuff could be described as the best music that was ever recorded.
Other artists close to the top: Hank Williams, CCR, Jimmy Reed, Howlin' Wolf, Otis Redding, Bo Diddley, Bob Dylan and I guess a few more that I'm forgetting.
Like Keith, I'm not a big fan of most great rock bands like the Who and Zeppelin. They are great, but in my mind no where near Stones level.
I love the female country stars like Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, Patsy Cline, Emmylou. Lately I'm listening a lot to Melissa Carper.
Current band that is close to my top list is the Teskey Brothers. Brilliant soul musicians.
Dutch entry: Herman Brood
Edit: I forgot one of the greatest maestro's - Chuck Berry.

It's an interesting question bc it shows people loving the Stones for different reasons. Or loving different facets of the band.
If someone answers Humble Pie, Free, Faces, Crowes, then you have a good idea of where they might be coming from musically.
If someone likes 90's type alt bands, I'd think they might like the Voodoo Lounge album.
Or I see matxil's answer, and I think 'I need to start paying extra attention to posts from Matxil' lol.
Yeah me..Love PT and SWQuote
