Georgemcdonnell: if you like the Stones, esp when they tilts slightly country, try The Nude Party. No one is, or will replace, The Stones. The Nude Party def shows a lot of influence from the Stones late 60s-early 70s. period, IMO.

If you want a discography to dive into, I’d suggest Bowie or Tom Petty. I’m sure most of you have heard the hits, but for some deeper cuts, both artists put out incredible albums in their later years. Check out Mudcrutch 1 & 2 for Petty and Bowie had some great one’s post 2000..Reality & Blackstar.

If you want a younger live band to go see..go see the Killers. Their album Hot Fuss is great and Brandon Flowers is a front man at the top of his game vocally. They put out new albums every few years. A recent album to check out is Imploding the Mirage.

Pearl Jam is also great live. Eddie is worth the price of admission.

The Stones are number 1, no doubt. Second place must be the great Elmore James. Some of his stuff could be described as the best music that was ever recorded.

Other artists close to the top: Hank Williams, CCR, Jimmy Reed, Howlin' Wolf, Otis Redding, Bo Diddley, Bob Dylan and I guess a few more that I'm forgetting.

Like Keith, I'm not a big fan of most great rock bands like the Who and Zeppelin. They are great, but in my mind no where near Stones level.

I love the female country stars like Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, Patsy Cline, Emmylou. Lately I'm listening a lot to Melissa Carper.

Current band that is close to my top list is the Teskey Brothers. Brilliant soul musicians.

Dutch entry: Herman Brood

Edit: I forgot one of the greatest maestro's - Chuck Berry.

Getting to finally see The Teskey Brothers in September. Recently stumbled upon their music. Thought they were a Staxact from 1969. Great vibe

The Rolling Stones - especially the MT era

Grateful Dead (not many any other deadheads here I noticed, I think it's The US Blues) they are not too popular in Europe, I guess.

Bob Dylan

I can be satisfied for a lifetime listening to thousands of tracts from these 3, covering all musical styles, bootlegs and rarities. It never gets old!

It's an interesting question bc it shows people loving the Stones for different reasons. Or loving different facets of the band.
If someone answers Humble Pie, Free, Faces, Crowes, then you have a good idea of where they might be coming from musically.
If someone likes 90's type alt bands, I'd think they might like the Voodoo Lounge album.
Or I see matxil's answer, and I think 'I need to start paying extra attention to posts from Matxil' lol.

That's always good advice.

My band number two is Status Quo, closely followed by The Cult and Hanoi Rocks. Not because any of them are "better" or "best" compared with other bands – but simply because I've followed them from young age and I've been stuck with them, lol.

Others:
Led Zeppelin
Faces
The Beatles
The Kinks
Van Morrison
The Jayhawks, Mark Olson, Gary Louris
Nick Drake
Taj Mahal
Bob Dylan
Miles Davis
The Flying Burrito Brothers, Gram Parsons
The Byrds
Yes
Motorpsycho
King Crimson
The Clash
Pink Floyd
All the blues, soul and rhythm and blues greats

Right now:

The Beatles - well, they're always 'there', or thereabouts
Oasis
Random Motown recordings - on Spotify, anyway.
Eric Clapton - bits and pieces, really; Derek & the Dominoes; Cream, solo

I like The Band.
It was about the music like with the Rolling Stones; I believe it.
These bands have a similar history but have different personas. When I put them together, it covers the whole emotional and musical spectrum of the music I love.
