Perhaps the fast sloppiness of JJF on LOVE YOU LIVE etc overpowers the aggressive tighter performance from 1978. It just seemed a bit better in 1978. I didn't really go by BPM but I will give it another spin.

That's actually really funny. Perhaps it's Mick's singing in 1978 that is a bit more with it?

I also do not have much interest in purchasing material from this era. I to go the shows (I did not miss a 2024 show) and movie releases when they are available in local theaters or at the IMAX near me.

However, I do not like the sound of their material since 1982. It just doesn't have the vibe/feel that I like. To me it sounds like something is missing or shouldn't be there.

Maybe it has to do with going all digital, I am not sure, but I haven't purchased a live release since Leeds and doubt I will.

It's not because of digital. You described it accurately: you don't like the way they sound post-1982.

Part of it is who's mixing and mastering the live releases. Sam Wheat is a horrible mixer. Some live releases were mixed by Bob Clearmountain, STILL LIFE, LIVE LICKS, LIVE IN TEXAS, of course they sound great.

They have, I think, the most interesting arc for a sound of all bands, at least that I've paid attention to. Post 1967, they slowed down and actually played. That lasted through 1971.

1972-1973 they got stupid fast with JJF, SFM, otherwise perfect.

1975-76 those songs (JJF, SFM, Brown Sugar) stayed horrendous, others were fantastic, but they got really sloppy.

1978 they tightened up, slowed down the stupid JJF, and found a new perfect.

1981-82 is the strangest live sound ever. Sloppy, fast, tight, slow, dumpy, rocking, rolling, heaving... they covered it all.

1989 onward, with some exceptions, quite poor ones and occasional great ones, they sound like the albums. Their sound... very weird. 1989-90 very clean. 1994-95 oddly sloppy. 1997-99 clean and dirty, perhaps their best sound of their ongoing modern era.

They sounded pretty damn good for 2002-03, almost a carry over of the BRIDGES sound. Since then? I dunno what they ate during the 2005-07 tours but it never digested.

A others have mentioned...I do think a lot of it is to do with the audio production and mixing.

Recent modern era releases [Wiltern , Totally Stripped for example] have been ok for my ears ...but some of the stuff [VL Uncut perhaps being the worst] are appalling.

It's almost like the production and mixing engineers have sometimes forgotten that this band live is, still and firstly, a "nasty" sounding guitar band.

If you took the guitars off VL Uncut altogether...

..it wouldn't sound much bloody different !

Damn. Sheperd's Bush is definitely worth getting just for these alone:

Shattered
All Down The Line
Some Girls
Melody
I Got The Blues
Brand New Car
Moon Is Up
Route 66

Melody never played live before? Ha.

SAN JOSE has Midnight Rambler but less, only 3 of these interesting songs.

Melody is on the El Mocambo offical release.

I like the fast Street Fighting Man they played to close the 1972-1973shows.Like Nick Kent said after the London 1973 show, “ nothing could top this”. Like here:video: [youtu.be]

GOATS HEAD SOUP super deluxe arrived today.

Wow.

Kinda wished I'd gotten SF, EOMS and SG super deluxes. They're all too expensive now. The books are fantastic.

I suppose whatever super deluxe comes out this year I better get rather quickly!

Sticky Fingers is a must because of Leeds. EOMS and SG aren't offering anything from may be a book.

And Roundhouse (SF). SG has a full bonus disc of extra tracks.

So are we still expecting a "Deluxe" re-issue this year or was it the completely useless/underwhelming VL LP repackaging ?

Haha, got to laugh after all the negative rhetoric I received from people on here about various subjects through the years it's ironic to find out they don't buy (any or all) the releases, especially on release day. Maybe they don't even have 10 albums total? Posers! Truth comes out eventually.

dosen't look like it this year we'll probably be getting

shepards bush 1999

go back a page or two and you'll see what i mean

long story short a page for it was added at mercury studios website

mercurystudios.tv

rumor still is mick was working on outtakes from the 90's for some kind of project but doesn't look like thats coming out this year

oh well shepards bush look fantastic anyways (as long as they don't mess up the sound)

Yes Shepherd's Bush would be nice even though I wouldn't describe it as a "Deluxe Re-Issue" that would describe an album rerelease. Other than B&B I don't really see what they could do though and it's possible that ship has sailed now...

What are you talking about since that's obviously specifically aimed at me. I have no recollection.

I do not get everything that comes out. GRRRR was stupid. What a waste of time. Some of the vault releases and new live releases at the time are pointless. Hyde Park, Havana, FUSE and a few others - completely pointless. THEY don't have to by any or all. Buying has zero to do with being a fan.

i wouldn't call it a deluxe re-issue either (i should have been more clear) i just meant that it looks like the big thing they release this year or the beginning of the next and not a deluxe voodoo or the memory motel like project that mick is rumored to be working on

i also think the deluxe album era is over and i think we may see some kind of series of boxsets collecting the remaining usable outtakes instead and that is what mick is working on i think

just my guess but as others have mentioned many times the deluxe album sets were a contractual thing with the record company and that's been fulfilled i think they may turn to a different way of releasing the studio outtakes in there vaults

although as gls, myself and others pointed out in a recent thread there's a lot of quality outtakes leftover from the some girls and emotional rescue sessions

so it seems a pretty good deluxe emotional rescue could be made if they wanted to

and also some people just can't afford the ridiculous price some of these things sell for

i love the stones but not enough to spend $150-$200 for a super deluxe album that's been brickwalled to death and packaged with a handful of cool outtakes, a show and a pretty book

seriously you can get a sealed copy of some girls from 1978 for that price

Just changing the subject slightly,I was very disappointed when Ron's IGMOATD remaster contained no bonus material at all, with of course Mick,Keith and Taylor all appearing on it.And they say Ron is a meticulate archivist.

The GHS super deluxe is missing the posters.

San Jose showed up without the Bluray. I sent that back. Not bothering with GHS.

I don't think the remaining albums such as Emotional Rescue are sufficiently well known to capture the interest of a wider public. Maybe a 3CD outtakes release makes more sense. Given the scope of the 'fully finished' leak from 60's onwards,
perhaps they have been working on something like that?

Re: Another deluxe re-issue this year

SOME GIRLS was number 2 in the UK, EMOTIONAL RESCUE was number 1 in the UK.

ER was number 1 in 5 countries, SG in 2.

SG was on the chart for 25 weeks, ER for 18.

TATTOO YOU reached number 2 in the UK for 29 weeks.

A super deluxe of ER seems reasonable. Since they still think that way.

Reading the GHS book, they recorded 30 or so songs yet the bonus disc is anemic in that regard. One was a B-side, oddly not included on the deluxe; one was on IORR, two were on TY. One made that TY's deluxe. Two made the GHS deluxe.

Where are the rest?

You think Tattoo you or Satanic majesties, or even Goats head soup or Voodoo Lounge are known enough to capture the intrest of people who are not hardcore fans? Still they gave all of them a 'deluxe' treat (well, not exactly true for VL).
Deluxe versions of every album besides 'the big 4' will be a risk commercially.

Yes Emotional Rescue was number one but has been forgotten by everyone except obsessive Stones fans, I'm talking cultural impact, not sales.

I also think that when we talk about Deluxe we are talking about reissued studio albums with one (or several) added records/CDs with unreleased songs from the sessions, etc...
Shepperd Bush 1999 is not part of the Deluxe series but rather part of the series of live shows that have been appearing in recent years.
But I don't see a problem with the fact that this live show has ended up being talked about here even though it's not a "standard" Deluxe.

Oh ho ho ho... I know plenty of chicks that love Dance, the title track and She's So Cold. Chicks are where it's at.

It's not as big as TATTOO YOU or SOME GIRLS, regardless of going number one in the US and UK, the last time that happened, but it's still big.

Don't underestimate the power of being down in the hole.

I love the States... but it's a whole other country!
