I can understand people wanting to talk about boots, and underappreciated cuts, and I know that everyone on this board has probably memorized every line of every track, but I just had to post this.

I was just in my car listening to Let It Bleed: Gimme Shelter, Love in Vain, Country Honk, Live with Me, Let it Bleed, Midnight Rambler, You Got the Silver, Monkey Man, YCAGWYW.

just . . . . . amazing.

Amen to that! (and what a title track!)

It is one of the Stones "10 out of 10" rated albums; a defining moment for them.
The tile track, however, is my least favorite song on the album.

no kidding . . .it's one of my favourite Stones song of all time.

This is really Keith Richards masterpiece. The guitar playing on this album is amazing! Listen to the slide on Love In Vain, the mystical guitars on Gimmie Shelter, the cool licks on Monkey Man, the effective slide on Let It Bleed, the dangerous, creepy riffs on Midnight Rambler, the laid-back licks on You Got The Silver - excellent!!!

A few years ago, I met up with a buddy that I hadn't seen in quite awhile at a party outside of Philadelphia. After the party, I wound up giving him a ride to NYC. We jumped in the car and I popped in "Let It Bleed."

Now, he's a big, big music fan and he had certainly heard the entire album at one time or another. Let's say he had a passing familiarity with it, even though he's not a heavy Stones listener.

We weren't talking about the record as it played, but I would look over to the passenger side and he was just laughing and gesturing at the stereo as the album progressed. He was literally giddy at how great the album sounded--track by track by track...

All I could say was: "I know, I know. Can you believe it?"

Had a similar experience . In the final year of high school one of my friends had a beat up old fiat convertible the we'd bomb around in (his dad was a car dealer). We listened to LIB everyday, sometimes two or three times, depending on how far we were driving. The tracks on one side of the cassette must have been coming through the other side by the time that year was over.

It became an automatic choice, once one side was over we just let the auto-flip feature do its thing and we played the other side. There was no chance that we were going to put in another tape. Even when the car broke down, and Fiats tend to do that, we'd keep the stero going while we figured out what we needed to do to get back on the road.

And the title track . . . killer country blues with a wonderful coda.

let it bleed is and was the very best album ever recorded...no other band before of after did a album as over all great as let it bleed.
it has it all....country, blues and rock!

I'm right there with you on "Let It Bleed" (the song). It's as quintessentially "Stonesy" as anything they ever did. A signature moment and an anthem for the faithful.

The 1981 live versions absolutely kill me. One of my big setlist fantasies is that they would use "Let It Bleed" to break up the warhorse run at the end of the show--maybe even as a first of two encores?

Yep - even some of the sloppier 81 versions are just glorious, glorious moments for the band. One of their all-time peaks - not sure they've ever quite scaled just lofty heights of pure ecstasy since....

LIB is around my 6th or 7th favorite... Great songs, but apart from Gimme Shelter, I like every song on it better live. From the ones that have been done live.

It would be a great encore for mick to come out, strap on an acoustic, and drawl, "Well we all need someone we can.... lean on?" like he does in '81. It's like, "You know this one, don't you?"

That they do play this one from time to time I think shows that mick recognizes it's one of his best efforts.

Let It Bleed is one of the best driving songs

I had a similar experience the other day -- driving my car with "Let It Bleed" playing and loving it. I didn't mind being stuck in traffic.

What I especially like about that album that isn't found in their recent work is the acoustic guitars. The tone of those guitars goes right to your heart.

Also, "Gimme Shelter" always makes me afraid. The song is terrifying, if you think about it, in spite of the optimistic ending ("Love, sister, it's just a kiss away"). The image in the song "burns like a bathroom carpet" is frightening. It's like your lying on the bathroom floor zoned out when you notice a fire.

I think "Midnight Rambler" is the angriest song ever written. The subject of the song climbs the garden wall of a wealthy mansion in the dead of night, slinks down the marble hall, puts his fist through a steel-made door, rapes the inhabitant, and threatens to stick a knife in her throat. A little portrait of class warfare.

um ... it's "burns like a red coal carpet"

i like the bathroom carpet idea though! :E
i used to think that line was "birds of prey are gathering" -
hard to understand now how i could hear that, but that's what the first printed version of the lyric i ever saw said,
and it affected my hearing. and it's actually not a bad line either.

I got the SACD version last year--sounds incredible!

The image of my bathroom carpet burning is terrifying indeed! It's a good thing I'd already be in the bathroom, because I'd otherwise be wetting my pants at this horrible sight!

I'm sorry, that's got to be one of the funniest misheard lines I've ever heard!

Agree Gazza. Could Gimme Shelter be the perfect rock song? Or Thunder Road?

Those are contenders. I would actually place "Cinnamon Girl" in that league. Exquisitely stupid and beautiful at the same time...

"Thunder Road," no way. Too self-dramatizing and pop-operatic. The perfect rock song needs to be something any band can play, which actually might disqualify "Gimme Shelter" too. But at least "GS" buries the vocals (well, mick's anyway) and keeps the lyrics simple.

Now, "Cinnamon Girl" is another story... but it's got that alternate tuning.

I think that the finish just seals the deal -- Monkey Man/YCAGWYW. wow. And they didn't even include the single version of HTW, which would have made it an insane album (although I don't know where I would have put it -- maybe third, and then move Country Honk to the second side . . . . Ahhh hell, why screw with perfection).

It's amazing that they were so strong as to not include the huge late 60's singles on "Beggar's" and "Let It Bleed." Just makes the Stones seem even more mighty to me...

But they are forever linked in my mind: "Jumpin Jack Flash" orbits "Beggar's Banquet" and is a phantom part of that record. The same is true for "Honky Tonk" and "Let It Bleed."

Yeah it's a ten out of ten.
I like the country bluez
influences here, done in
a ragged/ rugged Stonezy
style. It's a classic!

LOL..for what its worth, I prefer Jungleland, Backstreets and Born to Run on that album to Thunder Road, but theyre all prerfct to my ears.

The perfect rock song? I Fought The Law by The Bobby Fuller Four. So there!
