A bit too much "polish" is the one thing that perhaps affects the whole album a little.

Compared to the 4 albums that preceded HD? It boggles my mind how anyone can come to this conclusion. Polish compared to Steel Wheels or Bridges or Bigger Bang????
Haha! Seriously???

I don't listen to those albums either. And why would I?
I like a few songs on them, but they are the exceptions.

Whatever those exceptions are, I agree.

Certainly it's different, though.

There's the obvious and there's the deeply subjective.

I didn't like Rain Falls Down for a while. Then I heard something and said, Ok.

VOODOO LOUNGE doesn't have that. That entire album reeks of 'Well we're being The Rolling Stones!' yet...

Exceptions. The occasional great or good song.

Unlike anything on VL or even BRIDGES or BANG, with one exception, there's a looser feel. Unlike anything on VL or BTB it resonates. Verse wise Mick plays around but the chorus, well...

"Talk to me, pour your secrets out
Tell me I'm the only man you ever dream about"

I don't think it's age. It's just being human.

Musically I understand the comparison to Slave but... slow down Dangerous Beauty from BANG.

It's inevitable, right? Sad Sad Sad is Brown Sugar inverted. Some have said Neighbours is Send It To Me (or something, really trying to remeber).

I've seen whatever, how Jumpin' Jack Flash is Satisfaction backwards.

It isn't.

There might've been another song...

It happens. Sleep Tonight is the bridge from Coming Down Again.

Keith's Illusion is Baby Break It Down. A turn around seeing that Love Is Strong is Wicked As It Seems. But Keith's solo idea of that riff, etc, melody, goes a lot further.

At least how Keith heard it.

My favorite song the Stones have put out in year, love it!

I don't know if it's my favourite, but it's amazing and I can tell you for sure that my favourite going back decades would be on HD.

Diamenty Hackneya!

It's no more Polish than any other album post-Kimsey.

It's British, and a tad polished winking smiley

We are on the same track, though I'd move Get Close and Depending to classic status.

What an absolutely awesome album.

Every instrument seems to fight for a place in the sun. I could wish the sax solo smoother and more up front.

If you listen to this song not being a fan, well, good luck!

I thought it was one of the catchiest tracks off the album and I was surprised it wasn’t released as a single to accompany the 2024 tour-would’ve been great advertising…the chorus singing ‘I wanna Get Close to you’ But I was also surprised they didn’t release any other singles besides Angry. I don’t think there’s much money in music other than touring mind you. As a musician and songwriter I can definitely attest to the fact that streaming is a fraction of what mechanical royalties are but hardly anyone buys physical albums or songs anymore. Anyway, as time goes on, the track doesn’t hit as hard as it did when I first got the record. Great open g riff by Keith, went and learned it right away. Too bad they never played it on tour-but that goes for more than one song off this new album. Heard them rehearsing Bite My Head off in Vancouver but they didn’t play it. Tell Me Straight was played well at that show. I thought Depending On You would’ve been a great audience sing along but they never played it live either. Get Close is a strong number. Maybe not one to remember for all the ages but a good tune and fun to sing and play nonetheless.

Sweet Sounds was also released as a single. + a video for Mess It Up.

I forgot that sweet sounds was released as a single. Although I don’t recall there being an accompanying video other than the live performance at the album release. And I think Mess It Up video was a remix? Anyway, you are correct. I would’ve liked to have seen a video for Get Close, Tell Me Straight and Bite My Head Off.

There were (are) three singles from HD. Angry and SSOH (edit and LP version) were released before the LP, and Mess It Up (Purple Disco Machine Remix) was released the day the LP came out. Angry and Mess It Up had video singles.

This song is still growing. One of my faves in the whole stones catalogue. Amazing they pulled this off.

Such a classic groove / riff, I figure this was a Keith track - it could have been on Main Offender. Great singing by Mick! I have re-listened a couple times since this thread was revitalized and I am starting to think this might take over as my favorite on the album!
