It's possible Angry was constructed around being the album opener once enough of it was figured out. It's an announcement.

For example, can you really hear Sad Sad Sad anywhere else except track one on STEEL WHEELS? Or Start Me Up anywhere else on TATTOO YOU?

As much as I love She Was Hot it's difficult to hear it as the album opening song. Toss aside what is known, and think of the song just as itself, it pops right to life - it would be a fantastic LP opening track.

Some are just obvious. "It sets the tone". Well, sure. That's certainly easy to say. However there's not one album that follows the set tone of any opening track, unless, of course, the implication is the seriousness of it, which is probably the point.

There's probably some obvious songs that probably should've been a single, like Rocks Off, All Down The Line, If You Can't Rock Me, All The Way Down.

Only a few LP opening tracks were the first single - Paint It Black (in the US), Brown Sugar, Miss You, Start Me Up, Undercover Of The Night, Love Is Strong, Rough Justice, Just Your Fool and Angry.

Happenstance? Probably not.

Had Jumpin' Jack Flash not been released as a stand alone single, think it would've been track 1 on BEGGARS? So used to hearing SFTD as the opening track... but I bet Flash would've been it. Of course, it's official album home is THROUGH THE PAST DARKLY but it still would've been a great opening track for BEGGARS.

Not so with Honky Tonk Women. That would not work at all. Gimme Shelter might be the greatest album opening song ever. HTW was their last stand alone single prior to Living In A Ghost Town.

54 years!

Of course, HTW's official album home is THROUGH THE PAST DARKLY as well.

Has there been any update at all about the documentary they shot while making the album?

The only reason to get HACKNEY DIAMONDS on vinyl is for the very last song - for audiophile geeks, anyway.

AmazonMusic pops up on my laptop every time I turn it on.

In 2022 The Cult's UNDER THE MIDNINGHT SUN was played every time and on through a majority of 2023.

In later 2023 HACKNEY DIAMONDS was played every time.

It's still the majority of what pops up - and I crank it (Charlie's drumming sounds so different than Jordan's, Mess It Up is a huge different sound, it's amazing, yet... Steve's drumming works fantastically).

And... Angry is still just as killer as it was from the get go.

I love Mick's dismissive vocals. He sounds like pre-1986 Mick, closer to 1978-1983 Mick than 1989-2005. It's his actual voice, SOME GIRLS, EMOTIONAL RESCUE, TATTOO YOU and UNDERCOVER. What he did on SOME GIRLS is damn good but the next three albums are superb. He has that intensity, snarl and timbre with HD.

Sometimes (Mick would) do a take and he’d say, I’m singing too good. I've got to do that again and “throw it away” more. I’m like, What do you mean? ‘"Throw it away more — feeling." And he’d go back out there and do the most effortless shit that you’ve ever heard in your life that was so much better and catchier.

Curious how often people are hearing anything off this album on their local radio stations, and what songs off the album have been heard?

I live in the Muscle Shoals area and have not heard one song played off Hackney Diamonds on local radio, even after calling in requests. Bit odd considering two of the Stones most famous songs were recorded here and it’s a town full of session musicians.. Maybe all due to corporate radio.

Zero.

Vlassic rawk stations won't play anything, it seems, past 1995 of some things, like Soundgarden; Stones, I think 1981 is the newest songs played, at least two of them.

What other kind of station would play new Stones? WXRT in Chicago is the only one I can think of.

Does anybody know anything anout release of "The Stones: Still Rolling", mentioned at [www.mercurystudios.co] ?

Seems that there's no release date until now. Maybe it'll released shortly before the 2024 Tour starts?

Interesting. With an announcement date back on 18 October, it seems strange that there's been no other mention in almost 3 months since then.

And yes, I noted the mention of the new album named "Hackney Diamond". tongue sticking out smiley

Mercury Studios is looking to sell the project at MIPCOM, taking place this week in Cannes.

It looks like nobody bought it so maybe it was shelved? It makes only Sense to release stuff like this now when the album is relatively new because they could reach now many general music fans with it with the hype of the album.

The 'My Life as a RS' series found its place in TV, in 1995/96 the 'Stripped' documentary was aired in TV and in 2005 there was in German TV a Music-Special (by Sat.1) about the making of the ABB album. Maybe no lack of interest by the broadcasters - maybe rather bad timing by Mercury (as described by you). If the documentary isn't aired in TV then they could release it along with the Racket NYC concert as a DVD/BR Superdeluxe.

Indeed, I also got the impression that with this delay, somebody's missed the boat.

well add it to the vault worth of footage to leak or use someday

and i was really looking forward to this one

why couldn't the stones just release it on there youtube channel or something for free if nobody's interested in buying it

I am still positive it will happen.

In my mind, the RACKET gig is the ending of the documentary, the culmination of all the great things it will contain; some writing (?), the recording, the excitement of the London release, a bit of rehearsal (?) and the crowd going wild at the Racket gig.

Sure, it would have been logical to release it together with the live CD but the album hit a second peak anyway.

I guess a mid-winter/spring release. It is an impressive feat if they manage to run this PR campaign all the way up to the tour.

Or they could release it as an bonus DVD to go with one more special edition of the album. HACKNEY DIAMONDS would re-enter the charts, since that way somebody would surely be interested in buying it....

But like pointed here, it unfortunately starts to look like someone is missing the boat here if the idea was to show it somewhere in order to promote the album for general music fans. Asked too much money?

But then again, it wouldn't be the first Stones film project to be shelved...

Sure, the link still works, but the page now has nothing about the doco, and the Chrome page tab at top of screen contains the words "Page not found". The content about the doco is gone.

Or working on an extended version that will then also include the follow-up album of Hackney Diamonds ?

I found an active page at [mercurystudios.tv]

Carries the "fast growing old but gathering no moss" date 18th Oct 2023, and also headed with the mention of the new album "Hackney Diamond" (sic.).

which if they can't sell it they can't exactly make back

if in reality it's more complicated then i'm making it please enlighten me

i'm far from knowledgeable on this subject which is why i asked

not being sarcastic i'm genuinely curious

if in the worst case scenario that they can't sell this why couldn't they just put it on there youtube channel to help promote and sell a few more copies of the new album and perhaps some tickets?

Oh. Ok. I was probably a bit surprised because it's a band that also sells socks, among other clothing, ornaments, glasses, wine, rum, tote bags... the only thing they give away for "free" is what you can see on YouTube.

Mick counts the dollars, especially if he's behind the idea of it. Making a documentary is way more expensive than a video for a song. The videos are monetized on YouTube and since they're short UMG probably makes enough to cover costs.

If UMG is behind the doc than perhaps they will monetize it if they can't get anyone to pick it up but it would be one of those 3 minutes of the doc, then 3 ads, on and on.

Or they could sell it on iTunes etc. Maybe it will come out on Bluray via Eagle Rock/Eagle Vision or Mercury, which would probably cost a bit more than a DL.

Both Mercury links at [mercurystudios.tv] and [www.mercurystudios.co] no longer have anything about it. The latter one is now in "page not found" mode.

Not only does this one appear to have missed the boat, the boat appears to have sunk. sad smiley
