Opening acts Tour 2024

I was wondering how they choose their openers. I've seen some great ones: Pretenders, Eagles; and some new acts that I liked: St. Paul and the Broken Bones and Wide Mouth Mason.

Well, allegedly The Ghost Hounds pay $1M to open, so I'm sure that's a factor.

The Licks and A Bigger Bang Tours probably presented the greatest, and most varied array of opening-acts: everyone from the likes of Van Morrison and Solomon Burke, to the Strokes, and the then, present-day pop-acts like Maroon 5 and Black Eyed Peas. These were huge tours, though. Since 2012, I don't there's been the need for such high-profile openers. I mean, the Strokes were the 'hippest thing' circa 2002.

Let's not forget Kanye West as well! Such a bizarre pairing that one was.

Among opening acts I've seen:

Henry Paul Band
Van Halen
Living Colour
Blind Melon
Kenny Wayne Sheppard
Bryan Adams
Third Eye Blind
No Doubt
St Paul and Broken Bones
Ghost Hounds
Zak Brown Band
a couple of other flavors of the month which I've forgotten.

The best of those were VH (the original 4), No Doubt (energetic set), St Paul (love this band), and Zak Brown (lots of talent, they played "Bohemian Rhapsody!)

I saw that, and the fact that 2 nights prior got Alice Cooper it really felt like a slap in the face.

I remember being surprised fake Guns N Roses were supposed to open for the Stones as well on that Bigger Bang tour till Keith took a tumble out of that tree.

Bobby Womack opened my first Stones show in 1981.

Buddy Guy was fantastic on the Zip Code Tour in Milwaukee.

For the most part, the other opening acts I’ve seen have been average (Promise Of The Real) to lamentable.

I guess it's a mixture – who pays enough money, who's promoter thinks the band we promotes needs more promotion, band/artist who are available (and are anyhow touring near Stones shows), local heros (like Echo&The Bunnymen at Liverpool), artist with whom the Stones are friends, bands the Stones like…

Personally I don't care about opening acts and most of the ones I saw were boring. The only exceptions were: Cage The Elephant (Paris 2017), Leon Bridges (Arnheim 2017, but his music is not really my cup of tea), and Ayron Jones (Paris 2023)

Some are specially chosen by the band and the band reps and others are likely suggested by booking agents based on availability. I wish they would dispense with the charade like a lot of other bands are doing. Even if I like the band, it's not a good environment.

One of the most memorable Stones shows i saw was on the Licks tour in Philly when the Pretenders opened up for them. Great show!

My favorite combo was Lenny Kravitz opening for GNR.

My Stones opening acts have been:

The Strokes
Sheryl Crow
Goo Goo Dolls
Black Eyed Peas
Maroon 5
Beck
Metric
The Charlatans
Alice Cooper
Kanye West
St. Paul & the Broken Bones
The Ghost Hounds

Had an ex-wife who hated Alanis Morrisette, so as a compromise for 'dragging' her to another Stones show, I agreed to skip Alanis in Albany on the ABB tour.

I believe Stevie used to guest with the Stones at the end of their set in addition to his opening set. Looks like Van Morrison just did a long opening set, didn't guest with the Stones:

Yes, I forgot Buddy Guy. Saw him twice in Milwaukee, including Zip Code, and both times he was excellent.

at my first show at Shea on the 89 tour, Living Colour got booed off the stage at the end. The next time i went, they added Johnny B Goode as their final encore, which was smart, because everyone loves that song, so no boos.

Ive seen such a variety of opening acts, starting with Screaming Jay Hawkins in '81 at the garden thru Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real in '19.

Most of the time, though, i just want to get past them and see the Stones!

We just tailgated thru Kanye West in '06;

John McEnroe played guitar for a number with the Pretenders at MSG in '02; preferred them to Ryan Adams, but Johnny Lang was just loud at the Roseland Ballroom, plus my knees were killing me from waiting in line and sitting cross legged on the floor for a couple of hours to save my spot!! too many long solos.

Counting Crows were fine in '94;

Foo Fighters in 97, wasn't much !of a fan;

caught Sloan and Metric, cant recall which one was in Boston and which one was in NY; obviously they didn't make an impact! But Alanis Morrissette wasn't bad at the garden on that tour.

im leaving a few out, but the best one had to be Buddy Guy at the beacon show.

Of their six live appearances in Japan 1990-2014, only 2006 had a support act (Richie Kotzen).

Can’t say I was impressed. Could have lived without it.

FYI, for their canceled five Budokan nights in Tokyo, Jan 28 - Feb1, 1973, that would have been the Stones’ first ever Japanese appearances, cult psychedelic/hippie rockers Flower Travellin’ Band were assigned to support them. Had the shows materialized as planned, the FTB would have contributed to the legend that wasn’t to be.
