I hear no issues with Daryl Jones, personally. I’ve always been a little baffled by the criticisms aimed at him. ‘He doesn’t swing like Bill’, etc. He does the job!

Me too. I think they should simply stop putting playing credits out. Very few people, if any, would have a clue

Howard Stern plays the guitar now and Andrew has helped him by jamming with him. Both are fans of the Stones' music and both have worked with Mick and Keith. That conversation should be great for us, Stones's fanatics!

He got his bones working with Glenn Hughes on "California Breed" in 2013 after an introduction by Julian Lennon, he was part of the Frontiers Records orbit in that period.

Never heard of him prior to Stones! One thing about Miley Cyrus, not a fan of hers but she sure knows a lot of classic rock tunes so good for her!

I too have also been saying that for years. So true.

Stern tried real hard to make it more interesting but it wasn't easy.....Andrew is talented but not the most exciting person to interview....was a bit boring.

Listened to Andrew Watt's new produced album by Elton John Who Believes In Angels (on Tidal 24bit 96khz). Musically it is pretty strong, but, to me, the production or mixing sounds terrible. Especially the beautiful voices are really thin and harsh as though they sing through an old radio. It messes with the listening experience. Too bad.

It was mixed by Serban Ghenea.

It's the mix.

And mastering.

Watt looks a bit frosty fried overall but whatever. As David Bowie said, Whut, an' look like yewww?

It was mixed by Serban Ghenea.

And mastered by Matt Colton. The same duo mixed/mastered Hackney Diamonds. And like the Stones album, 'Who Believes In Angels?' has a brickwalled dynamic range of just DR6, as measured by [ProStudioMasters.com] .

The brickwalled mastering of Hackney Diamonds wasn't necessary, as the Vinyl version (by Matt Colton & Daniel Harfield) as well as the Dolby Atmos version (by Giles Martin) proves - [MagicVinylDigital.net] .

You could try the Dolby Atmos version instead (by John Hanes; Atmos capable sound system required) - [Listen.Tidal.com] . BluRay disc with Dolby Atmos: [Store.EltonJohn.com] , [SuperDeluxeEdition.com] , [Platenzaak.nl] , [Bravado.de] .

Whatever it is, mixing, mastering, I don't know, but it sounds awful through any speakers I have.

It's not the mix. It's the mastering.

It's NEVER THE MIX. It's always the mastering.

There's a lot you can find about mastering (and remastering) ruining albums. It doesn't solve anything other than learning why a lot of releases and reissues sound so bad.

I reluctantly got the SOME GIRLS reissue with the bonus album, deluxe version, whatever, and the original album destroyed by Stephen Marcussen's "remastering"...

How he's still employed is criminal - he ruins everything he's involved with.

Yes, it's the mastering that destroys the CD/streaming Version of HD too. I listen to the Blu Ray and the 5.1 mix sounds phenomenal. The vinyl really sounds good too. Just compare the Intro of Angry oder the last Heavy part of Sweet Sounds of Heaven.

Same with Matt Colton (Metropolis Studios, London). They ruined also Peter Gabriel's i/o album with a brickwalled dynamic range of just DR6 (5-9).

Ideally, there should be some sort of official archive of Stones music released in digital format with all versions available, the current and the old ones (something like what I am quite sure many of us have in our hard drives).

This because they all have their own merits. Unfortunately, with Stones digital formats there is no "perfect" version, it's always a compromise.

Even if the old Stones CBS and Virgin cds have more dynamic range, for many other aspects, I prefer the Universals. They sound warmer, more musical. That doesn't mean that dynamics are not important for me. They are, but they are only one of the ingredients of the pie.

In my - very personal - opinion, I prefer compressed beautiful sounds to a dynamic turd.

And, to be fair, the brickwall is not even 100% Marcussen's fault: at the time of the Universal remasters I exchanged mails with him (there is an old thread of mine covering this conversation) and he explained how involved Mick was in the process, and how the last word was his.
