I agree with you RollingFreak about the point they are at now.

A reunion seems far-fetched, but I can see how a short run at the Sphere could be very appealing to them but especially for David.
The Sphere has potiential for him to create something new with Talking Heads music.

FIngers crossed!

It's the perfect thing, because I could imagine David being very intrigued, but obviously he doesn't have the pull on his own to command 4 nights there I'd think. Talking Heads very obviously would, and it affords them the ability to do whatever they want. Especially in their advanced age, that kind of "show" could actually help them equal a Stop Making Sense or exceed it, in way that video visuals could for them a this age when pure stage presence old fashion stage show like Stop Making Sense. Stop Making Sense is all just them on stage, young musician energy. The Sphere would be a good way where they can (for lack of a better word) be "old" on stage, and let a lot of the visuals do the talking on the show. Not in a Pink Floyd way where they are just backing up a visual, but it would be huge support for them to actually be themselves on stage but still blow you away.

Having said all of that, after everything David has said about not really needing/wanting them as his backing band, I'd just be shocked if that changed. Yes, they are now speaking to each other, but thats very different than him thinking they can actually be the unit to present his vision. Whether they'd even want to do that for him, or whether David would feel obligated to include them in the vision, which at this point he seems very comfortable just doing without interference on his own. It would be cool, and the fact that they are talking is progress, but even if he came up with a great new stage show, it seems David doesn't see his projects as something that need to be done WITH the Talking Heads, even though they always include a ton of Talking Heads material. Then after all of that, if they could even sustain a full show. Obviously David can, and Jerry Harrison has when he's been touring Remain In Light with Adrian Belew recently. But I truly don't know when Chris and Tina did a Tom Tom Club show recently, and whether either of them have the energy for a full show. Especially Chris Franz. Yes he'd most likely have backup, as he did even in Stop Making Sense, but drumming is tough. I have no idea if he could do a 2 hour show for several nights.

Tom Tom Club did a handful of shows in Europe in 2013 and haven't really been heard from since then.

The last update on their website is a 2020 plug for Chris Frantz's book "Remain In Love".

Just caught the film on hbo last night. I’m not a huge fan, but I was mesmerized and absolutely glued. Could not look away, it is truly an electrifying performance. I was amazed at how well behaved the audience was!

It feels like routinely the two "best concert films of all time" are this and The Last Waltz. Both are spectacular in their own right, though I certainly give this one the edge of I truly think its a movie you could show ANYONE and its hard to believe they wouldn't like it. You do not have to be a fan of the Talking Heads but as you said, its a mesmerizing performance. I get captivated by a different thing every time I watch it. One time its David, another time its Tina, another its the whole backing band, another its the gorgeous cinematography. Its a brilliant stageshow they had that was perfectly captured on film. Jonathan Demme, a great director, tried many other times with guys like Neil Young, but it never worked as good as this. It was a perfect partnership between him and the band.

I won't say which concert film is better, but as I mentioned, I can't think of anyone thats seen this that didn't like it. I don't think thats the case with The Last Waltz.

Talking Heads have made a cryptic post about an announcement on June 5 - the 50th anniversary of their first gig.

Saw this yesterday. So last year they posted something similarly cryptic that ended up just being one of their talks they did at the Pantages I believe. Like once it happened, it was super obvious, but originally it was like "WTF does this mean."

A ton of speculation, mostly about either merch or a new box set or live album. Talk is they wouldn't post this if it was merch, but they literally have a box set coming out in 2 months, they JUST released a live album for RSD so another one feels like that's not that big a deal. I'm not in any way saying when you rule those out it means tour, because there's a million reasons that wouldn't happen. They I think are just too old. David and Jerry could, cause David still puts on a great show, but Tina and Chris just don't play music anymore, even though Chris is usually the one asking for a reunion, and I don't think they could handle it. Also I think it hurts them that they just put Stop Making Sense back into everyone's consciousness and it'll never be THAT. Mixed in with David apparently having a solo album and presumably tour coming up soon. I'd love it to be shows, but it feels the moment is passed and everyone just needs to be happy they are at least friends, which was never an inevitability.

Needless to say, still excited to see what this is. Clearly a meaningful anniversary for them and it'll be fun to see how they honor it. Chris tweeted he "can't wait" so hey, let's see what they're planning. (not that you implied tour either)

Saturday night in Flushing Meadows NY Olivia Rodrigo was headlining Night 2(?) of Governor's Ball Music Festival, and, well... this happened:

"Burning Down the House"
While not quite achieving that, in my humble estimation.

I did not have this kind of David Byrne renaissance over the last decade happening like it did on my bingo card. He really brought himself back into the public consciousness with that Broadway show, after years of already doing quality work. I still remember when one of his songs came on my PC in the late 90s. Guy's kept himself out there but he's now the envy of so many pop stars. This wasn't anything amazing, but they had fun and Olivia did pretty good. She kept up with him well and in a way that seemed pretty genuine. Bravo to David, every time.

Here's "Life During Wartime" live, most likely the highlight of the concert film "Stop Making Sense", it embraces and manifests every aspect that made this band so special:

Life During Wartime - live in L.A. Dec. 1983

I fully agree. What makes it all even more amazing is the simplicity of the environment, no fancy lights, no show enhancement, no fireworks: all the energy and magic come from the music and the performers.

I thought he wouldn't be performing any Heads music, but just checked a Utopia setlist and see that he did in that show. So seeing him Oct 14 in Richmond.

It's becoming be an ex-Heads themed year. In addition to seeing Jerry Harrison host Stop Making Sense in Sep, I'm now hoping to also see him next month with Adrian Belew performing Remain in Light in its entirety.

Oh yeah, he plays Heads stuff. That's still the cornerstone of his set, though he does pretty expertly weave it in with his great solo material. Better than most I'd say. But I think that was why the other Heads members got annoyed at his Broadway show (particularly the few COVID sets he did that were a totally different set and a LOT more Talking Heads material). And rightfully so that they were, cause there's no reason he couldn't do this WITH those members, and its his vision. I get why he doesn't, but he's never abandoned his Heads songs (that he very clearly sees as his) and he just either recontextualizes them or straight up does them with his own band and not them.

It works, but when I have seen him it crosses my mind that when he's doing something like Burning Down The House "it would be awesome if you had the rest of the guys here." I'd think that if Mick toured without the Stones and the Stones no longer existed.

Does anybody have any quest-ions?

(I always love that ending.)

I do, actually!

Especially in light of where we are.

Did any of the Stones ever comment on the Heads? Mick of course was tracking everything new developing in the late 1970s... punk, disco, and so on, so he'd have been the most likely to opine on them if any of them did. I don't recall anything myself.
