A huge loss. He was a great songwriter. Amazing songs, pure terror. "I'm Not Supposed To Care" is terrifying. One of the greatest ballads ever written. Heart wrenching.

Of course, in the fall of every year, the ship. But he had so much more. He was truly a joy. This may be way off but I view his importance to music equivalent to Johnny Cash and Chuck Berry.

RIP Gordon. Your music gave joy to many, including me.

Sometimes i think it's a shame, when i get feeling better when i'm feeling no pain.

Gord grew up in a smallish town called Orillia, as did my mom. His family ran the local dry cleaner and mom swore she remembered him delivering their dry cleaning as a lad. Debatable.

He was huge in Canada in the ‘60s and ‘70s, one of the first Canadians to make it big internationally, and is beloved here. He was inducted into the R&RHOF by Bob Dylan.

Likely the first concert I went to was to see Gord during his annual appearance at Massey Hall, circa 1975. I last saw him when he performed the final concert there on Canada Day, 2018, before it was closed for restoration, and he was surprisingly strong. When Massey reopened in 2021 he was first to appear on the new stage. At a 2017 performance there by Blue Rodeo, Gord Downie made likely his final appearance on stage during the encore, and Gord Lightfoot and Gord Pinsent were in attendance - we take our Gord’s seriously here. A backstage photo of that night turned up a few weeks ago when Gord Pinsent passed. Now, we have lost all three.

Gord had some serious medical issues in the last 20 years but kept bouncing back. He was scheduled to tour this year but about 2 weeks ago it was announced that the tour was cancelled, no explanation. It is reported he passed of natural causes.

There is going to be some serious mourning here, but he’ll never be forgotten. Thank you Gord, and safe journey.

My wife's father (who I never met because he died in 1979) used to work the Great Lakes freighters. His best friend was Robert Rafferty, who was the ship's steward on the Edmund Fitzgerald. Rafferty was the "old cook" who says "It's too rough to feed ya" and, later, "It's been good to know ya" in Gordon Lightfoot's song. For the record, he really wasn't that old. He was 62. Most of the Edmund Fitzgerald's crew were older guys.

It's cold and raining in Buffalo right now and I'm playing Gordon Lightfoot's "Rainy Day People" I just read about his sad passing now.









I loved his hits from "Carefree Highway" to the eerie "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" and others.

He has a very unique orchestral singer/songwriter sound. Very lush and melodic with great words. A great starting point is of course the If You Could Read My Mind album and after that Don Quixote from the following year and Sundown from 1974.

I beleive he lived next door to Keiths former house in Toronto . .and possibly back as far as the Toronto debacle time period
