I don't have a Top 100 favorite Stones tracks.

I must say this is the greatest live version of 'Before They Make Me Run'.

Keith flailing around and playing the guitar down to the ground puts the song in a genre itself called 'pirate rock'.

I couldn't really rank them in order, but I probably could come up with a list. I was just on a site coming up with my top 5. Top 100 would be a little easier!

Not a top 100 list, but I have to name one song not in that list for me. The most important (main?) song for The Rolling Stones, but not my favorite (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction. Live it’s kind of Okay. Not saying I think it’s a bad song, but others I like highly more. smiling smiley

Out of curiosity, I'd love to know your favorite *songs* as opposed to the favorite tracks as called for in this topic, even your top 25, say. (Also, what do those initials of yours stand for, if you want to say?)

Please allow me, fellow devotees, to indulge in an update of my annual Stones-Top100 (est. 1973). Feel free to comment. Better still, list your own faves. With an embarrassment of riches to choose from it's not gonna be easy but a bit of soul searching is part of the fun, right?

Studio recordings on official releases only...

1. Satisfaction
2. Wild Horses
3. Gimme Shelter
4. Honky Tonk Women
5. Goin' Home
6. No Expectations
7. Stray Cat Blues
8. The Last Time
9. Paint It Black
10. Sway

Oh, my word!!!!! I could not believe my eyes: Goin' Home #5!!!! Probably the silliest and biggest nothing ever. A pretentious "jam." Right side this, left side that -- Aftermath style. Unbearable! They could have included a couple of singles instead. That is a song that gives definition to the term "filler."

I do not hate any Stones songs but Goin' Home is #2658 in my list of best Stones songs.

How about including Start Me Up or Jumpin' Jack Flash or Brown Sugar in your Top 10? That would make your Top 10 pretty awesome.

Goin' Home is great, imo.

Much obliged, man. I had already given up on this thread with most users complaining about a top100 of favourite tracks being "far too much" to ask and others voicing their discontent in the opposite direction. Never, they trumpeted, could they "narrow this list down to just 100 tracks". Puzzling.

Your list is formidable, not least because there are a dozen or so tracks that I dearly love, although they didn't quite make my Top100 e.g. "No Use In Crying", "Congratulations", "It Won't Be Long" and "Blue And Lonesome". Also, your favourites cover the entire Stones age from "Stoned" to "Living In A Ghost Town". You really seem to like this band a lot. Good for you.

I thought it was obvious: mick-keith-brian-bill-charlie-mick-ronnie

As for my favourite Stones-songs (compositions) I cannot produce a definite list on the spot because songs are really hard to compare with so many cover versions around. But what I will say is that the following would make up my Top20, roughly in that order: Wild Horses, No Expectations, Sister Morphine, Torn & Frayed, Satisfaction, Play With Fire, Salt Of The Earth, Hand Of Fate, Sympathy For The Devil, Honky Tonk Women, Before They Make Me Run, Dead Flowers, Plundered My Soul, Angie, Rocks Off, Sway, Paint It Black, Far Away Eyes, Brown Sugar, Out Of Time. As opposed to tremendous, mindblowing tracks like Gimme Shelter, Goin' Home, Stray Cat Blues, The Last Time or Fingerprint File: brilliant recordings, fantastic music, no doubt, but not exactly works of genius in terms of tunes and lyrics. Which is why it's so much easier to compare the tracks (the finished recordings) by simply asking yourself: when push comes to shove, which are the ones I enjoy most?

No kidding. It's a wonder of juvenile intuition and improvisation, immensely subtle and delicately nuanced. One of Mick's greatest vocalistic achievements and at a tender age, too.

Thanks, mkbbcmr.

You don't care for Beast of Burden much, either as a track or song?
Also, O/T, what brought you to IORR so recently or were you here before?

I'm not a huge fan of "Beast", true. There are several cuts on "Some Girls" I like more, both as songs and as tracks. Great album, anyway.

Re. your other question: I did pay IORR the occasional visit over the years and I was even tempted to join a number of times but there was always something that made me think twice. Like - more often than not - it's "Jagger" on this board, rarely "Mick", whereas it's always "Keith" or "Keef", never "Richards". From following IORR discussions you get the impression that this Jagger character must be a cold and inconsiderate business type while good ol' Keith, the human riff, stands for all that's brill about the Stones: a trusted advocate of their true spirit. A popular stereotype, no doubt, but not one you would necessarily expect to hold sway over a Stones fan forum. I may be mistaken, of course, having only read a fraction of the wisdom accumulated in these pages. If I am, I apologise.
