Posting links on IORR - youtube etc
Posted by: bv ()

If your link does not show up on display here on IORR, or other places, then check out your link is really an "https" link.

You may use "Edit post" in order to change text/links from http into https.

Posting a link on IORR:

1. Insert the text you want the link to work with

2. Click the icon image "Insert URL" (looks like a globe with a link) in the IORR toolbar, above the text box where you write your comments

3. Insert the link address (copy/paste i.e. Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V)

4. Click the OK button

Or...

You may just insert the text link itself, then it will show up as a quick-link with the domain name on display.

Important:
Links should be https. They are secure. Insecure links (http) may be ignored in browser display, due to security.

There is a separate thread related to browser setup to display mixed mode secure/insecure links:

PROBLEM SOLVED... YouTube Videos Not Displaying Within Forum Threads

Please note that Browsers, like Chrome, Firefox, Edge etc may change the way they display links and graphics at any time. They may change every time you upgrade, and these changes are due to security, to protect you and others from accidentally accessing insecure sites.

IORR has been running with secure pages (https:// server technology) for years. If you try to access IORR insercure, by typing "h t t p : / / i o r r", then you will automatically be redirected to the one and only IORR site which is secure served, through the https protocol.

Make sure your links are always secure. This is on display on browsers with a secure symbol right next to the address (url).

Example of how secure links looks like in Chrome and Firefox:

Just a query BV. I know that by removing the 's' in a youtube link, the image will appear in the post, and the video is playable within the window of the post and that we've been doing this for years.

Is that acceptable to do or are you saying to not post without the secure link, even with regards to youtube?

Thanks for the clarification.

Posting http images may have been working for some time, but I assume it has been blocked by browsers in a recent update. Browser updates are done by Google and other vendors all the time, and the workaround (like I have done below, with http and https, does not display the video image anymore.

The display change is not happening on the IORR side. It is under control of vendors i.e. Microsoft, Google, Apple or whoever is in charge of your operating system and browsers. They may be upgraded automatically at any time, in order to protect you and others from getting an unwanted insecure image on display, or an unwanted insecure link.

The embedded display of YT-Videos on IORR worked until 13-Mar-2023 afternoon (CET). Now there're only white areas, e.g. in the RS-Chronicles thread - [iorr.org] . Something must happened on IORR. My web browser wasn't changed and the browser also gets no silent updates. Maybe the cause lies at Cloudflare?

And videos can be seen in the "what are you listening to" thread, and everywhere else that I've looked on IORR.
Seems it's been completely fixed (fingers crossed), but couldn't resist posting this as a test....

on youtube copy the complete url in the address bar above the youtube video you want to post while your playing it

on iorr in this box click or tap the video tab in the above bar (the last tab)

paste the youtube url in the text box that appears but remove the "s" from "https" so that it appears as "http" in the address you pasted

be carful not to change anything else about the address just delete the "s"

then tap or click "ok"

then tap or click the "post message" tab in the bottom right of this box

that it

it should work

sorry if you already knew this but still can't do it for some reason

i'm not trying to come off as condescending just trying to help

Or even easier, simply copy and paste the youtube video url directly in to this message box where you type words and remove just the s after http.
You can click preview to see that it appears, and then post message and video.

The youtube video display of http is back, so I assume it was youtube not doing the display function properly for a while.

There is an undocumented way of getting video links with graphics on display in IORR posts. It has been working for all the years. The video needs to be an address like this:

http:// ...

However, most sites these days are https, like this:

https://

So the undocumented feature is simply to paste the youtube address here, and then just taking away the "s" in the https bit before you post the text.

seems simple and obvious now that i've read it but i never considered it before

The odd thing about removing the "s" from "https" is that if if you right click on the image and copy the video url and paste it in the address line it contains the "s" again

Because this URL function comes directly from YouTube and is integrated in the video itself.

With the Firefox browser you can also check that the connections are secure. Click on the lock icon (left beside the iorr.org URL) - then follow the arrow 'connection is secure', then click on 'more informations' and then a window opens with 4 tabs of which one is called 'Media'. There you can see that the embedded YT-Videos are https although the URL on iorr.org is just http.

The embedding of YT-Videos on iorr.org works btw only with the full YT-URL which looks like: www.youtube.com/watch?v=1234ABCD or like: www.youtube.com/v/1234ABCD .
But the embedding with the preview picture does not work with the shortened YT-URL which looks like: youtu.be/1234ABCD .

Once again, videos are no longer appearing here when the s has been removed from the https link.
Could be another temporary glitch..........
