Largest concert crowds in history

There is a list pubished with the 29th biggest crowds ever by a concert. The Rolling Stones are 2 times in this list with the Copacobana show (2006) and Hyde Park (1969). I think if i see that list with crowdnumbers i think Sarsstock (2003) and Altamont (1969) should also be mentioned in this list.

Somewhere buried in my collection is the Billboard Boxscore for the 30th July, 2003 gig at Downsview Park in Toronto... aka Sarsstock...

Attendance was listed as 489,000 plus if I remember correctly...

Big drop from 1 to 2 and from 20 to 21.

I consider it my personal Woodstock! Haha

Crazy binge those 3 days in T.O. My buddy and I realized "heading to the front" wouldn't happen, so we just found a video board and a PA stack with food and drink nearby, and called it good!

Helluva show for $16... still love watching that clip of AC/DC's opening salvo of Hell Ain't a Bad Place to Be... epic! Hadn't heard that number in a while, and it was a great way to start their set with a crushing groove.

Number 27 on the list is higher than number 21...and in the photo for Hyde Park 1969, I didn't realize Ronnie had take over for Taylor by then.

Plus as already noted, where's Altamont, where's Sarstock?

This list doesn't leave confidence for thoroughness.

They missed Watkins Glen and the US Festival.

Impossible to estimate a crowd at a free concert, like Rod's at the beach. I've always read Hyde Park 69 had a crowd of 250000, but here it's 500000!
Also, they show Metallica in Moscow, but it was AC/DC that were the headlining act.

Most of these lists of "highest-attended concerts" are incomplete or simply wrong. Also, free shows are often listed with far to high numbers. The numbers below are my own numbers, I was there, so they should be quite accurate.

Rolling Stones large crowd shows:

Strahov Stadium, Prague, Czech Republic 1995 (127,000 fans, regular tour, paid ticket)
SarsStock, Tortonto, Canada 2005 (450,000 fans, ticket price approx CAD 20)

Copacabana Rio de Janeiro Brazil 2006 (1.3 million fans, free concert)
Havana Cuba 2016 (500,000 fans, free concert)

List of highest-attended concerts (Wikipedia)

Then most lists are missing the Guinnes World record listing of the a-ha concert at Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro Brazil back in 1991, with a record crowd of 198,000 fans.

That list sometimes includes TV viewers, which makes no sense.

#13 too: Jean-Michel Jarre, Paris 1979, Place de la Concorde.

Mick Jagger was in the audience and was stunned from the total show (lights, music, images). He contacted Jarre backstage for a future collaboration, which never happened - but it was the starting point for the big stadium shows of the Rolling Stones.

I was at this one. 300K was a reasonable estimate. I guess its not a concert but a memorial with sets by The Grateful Dead, John Fogerty, Santana, Jackdson Browne and others

Younger readers may be interested in the fact that last evening (March 2nd) Ed Sheeran beat his own record for attendance.

He played to about 101,000 at the MCG in Melbourne (close to Rockman's back garden?). He'll beat it again tonight with an expected crowd of 107,000.

For the record, I don't 'get' Ed Sheeran, but recognise that he's darned popular.

1n 1978 in Ontario California at the Ontario motor speedway they held California Jam 2. Per Wikipedia it had 350,000 and artists were: Aerosmith, Foreigner, Heart, Mahogany Rush, Dave Mason, Jean-Michel Jarre, Rubicon, Santana, Bob Welch, Ted Nugent. A friend and I did a two day road trip from Texas to see it in my new car. One wild experience and a great show.
