Law and Order: Special Victims Unit star Richard Belzer has died at the age of 78.

The actor started off as a comedian, but gained fame for his role as Detective John Munch, first on Homicide Life on the Streets and then on SVU. He also appeared on the original Law and Order and Trial by Jury.

In total, Belzer played Munch on 11 different shows over the course of 22 years, including the X-Files, Arrested Development, The Wire and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

He died in at his home early Sunday in Bozouls in southwest France after battling a series of health issues.

‘His last words were, ‘F—ck you, motherf—cker,'’ writer Bill Scheft told The Hollywood Reporter.

He was known for his better than fair Jagger impersonation, and, as someone once astutely pointed out, while he didn't really resemble Mick, he did look very much like a combination of all of The Rolling Stones!

He did resemble Jeff Beck in his younger years.

First time I saw Belzer was in The Groove Tube in 1974:

His wacky bit as "The President" is weirdly prescient.

Life imitated art.

RIP

R.I.P. Belzer
I think he was a Stones fan too

Years ago, when Keith Richards spoke at New York public library after his book Life came out, Belzer was sitting right in front of me... He was sitting next to Lou Reed
