Greatest written verses of all-time, Stones and others.

Remember pick a VERSE from a song from any group or person, not the entire song.

I'll start it out with a verse from what I consider to be one of the greatest Stones songs ever written:

from SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL - 1968

So if you meet me
Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, and some taste
Use all your well-learned politesse
Or I'll lay your soul to waste.

Feel so hypnotized, can't describe the scene
It's all mesmerized, all that inside me
The sunshine bores the daylights out of me
Chasing shadows, moonlight mystery

though I could easily pick another verse from the same song

Jigsaw Puzzle -

"Me, I'm waiting so patiently
Lying on the floor
I'm just trying to do my jig-saw puzzle
Before it rains anymore"

Well the ballrooms and smelly bordellos, and dressing rooms filled with parasites.
On stage the band has got problems, they’re a bag of nerves on first nights

And just let me fall out of the window with confetti in my hair
Deal out Jacks or better on a blanket by the stairs
Tell you all my secrets, but I lie about my past
Will you send me off to bed forevermore?

Tango till they’re sore - Tom Waits

Will it be poison put in my glass?
Or will it be slow or will it be fast?
The bite of a snake, the sting of a spider
A drink of Belladonna on a Toussaint night
Hiding in a corner in New York City
Looking down a .44 in West Virginia

I left you on the Debris
At the Sunday morning market
You were sorting through the odds and ends
You was looking for a bargain
I heard your footsteps at the front door
And that old familiar love song
'Cause you knew you'd find me waiting there
At the top of the stairs

Faces/Debris

Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes
They call me on and on across the universe....

Dan Fogelberg - Same Old Lang Syne - 1980

The beer was empty and our tongues were tired
And running out of things to say
She gave a kiss to me as I got out
And I watched her drive away
Just for a moment I was back at school
And felt that old familiar pain
And as I turned to make my way back home
The snow turned into rain

In the clearing stands a boxer
And a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders
Of every glove that laid him down
Or cut him til he cried out
In his anger and his pain
"I am leaving, I am leaving"
But the fighter still remains.

I’m listening to Neil Young, I gotta turn up the sound
Someone’s always yelling turn it down
Feel like I’m drifting
Drifting from scene to scene
I’m wondering what in the devil could it all possibly mean?

When you're drunk in the alley
With your clothes all torn
And your late night friends leave you
In the cold gray dawn
Just seemed too many flies on you
I just can't brush them of

Angels beating all their wings in time
Smiles on their faces and a gleam right in their eyes
Thought I heard one sigh for you
Come on up, come on up, now ...

May the good Lord shine a light on you
Make every song you sing your favorite tune
May the good Lord shine a light on you
Warm like the evening sun.

Shine A Light

There's a whole lot of people in trouble tonight from the disease of conceit
Whole lot of people seeing trouble tonight from the disease of conceit
Give you delusions of grandeur and an evil eye
Give you the idea that you're too good to die
The they bury you from head to your feet
From the disease of conceit

‘Disease of Conceit’

Stones (one of many possibilities), ‘I am just living to be lying by your side’ - Moonlight Mile

Other, Elvis Costello, ‘She’s filing her nails while they’re dragging the lake.’ - Watching The Detectives

Kris Kristofferson and Fred L. Foster - Me And Bobby McGee - Sung by Janis Joplin - 1971

From the Kentucky coal mine to the California sun
Yeah, Bobby shared the secrets of my soul
Through all kinds of weather, through everything we done
Yeah, Bobby baby kept me from the cold
One day up near Salinas, Lord, I let him slip away
He's lookin' for that home, and I hope he finds it
But I'd trade all of my tomorrows for one single yesterday
To be holdin' Bobby's body next to mine

Some people debate whether Janis Joplin changed the lyrics from “One day up near Salinas” to “One day a misalliance” any thoughts?

Another of my favorite verses:

The Rolling Stones - 19th Nervous Breakdown - 1966

You were still in school when you had that fool who really messed your mind
And after that you turned your back on treating people kind
On our first trip I tried so hard to rearrange your mind
But after a while I realized you were disarranging mine

I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes and just for that one moment I could be you.
Yes I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is to see you...

Let 'em be veiled down in black
I want nine men going to the graveyard, bubba
And eight men comin back

Don't feed that snake that turns on you
You starve it out, that's what you do
And it makes you lie, it makes you cheat
It steals your shoes and cuts your feet
The snake keeps feeding through the night
You lose your soul without a fight
There's nothing right that you can say
You keep on talking anyway...

Ain’t it just like the night to play tricks when you’re tryin' to be so quiet?
We sit here stranded, though we’re all doin’ our best to deny it
And Louise holds a handful of rain, temptin’ you to defy it
Lights flicker from the opposite loft
In this room the heat pipes just cough
The country music station plays soft
But there’s nothing, really nothing to turn off
Just Louise and her lover so entwined
And these visions of Johanna that conquer my mind

(Bob Dylan: Visions of Johanna)

(before I name any Stones songs I have to name at least 100 Dylan songs before – sorry guys)

Winter

And I wish I been out in California
When the lights on all the Christmas trees went out
But I been burning my bell, book and candle
And the restoration plays has all gone around

It sure been a cold, cold winter, Lord
My feet been draggin' 'cross the ground
And the fields has all been brown and fallow
And the springtime take the long way around

You're awful bright, you're awful smart
I must admit you broke my heart
The awful truth is really sad
I must admit I was awful bad

Oops wrong topic.

And put me on a train
I have no expectations
To pass through here again
