Honolulu 1973 rediscovered

Almost exactly 50 years after the event I rediscovered the audience recordings of the Honolulu shows back in 1973 on January 21 and 22. Therese are very informal concerts, with Mick Jagger singing very relaxed. And it is really amazing how he is saving a missed harmonica intro to Sweet Virginia on the first concert. Alomng with the Nicaraguan Benefit Concert it was a great start to a glorious year of live performances!

I love these shows too and still hope the Stones will release the full Nicaragua concert as a vault release. Including the Midnight Rambler encore.

I believe these are the shows the relatively unknown ZZ Top opened. Historic!

I love the Hawaii shows.Too bad they haven’t or can’t be released in a Vault release with improved sound by Bob Clearmountain

There is a great article about the Honolulu concerts on the Internet, plus very interesting links:

Listening what they did then I wonder why this band is not liked by anyone on the planet...

(and this is why this kind of opinions make us "fans" grinning smiley)

Seemingly, he chose the wrong harp, noticed it and just played some bluesy things. Great stuff! smiling smiley

There seems to be no recording of the afternoon show on Monday, January 22, on YouTube, but iut seems to have been a rather tired show, someone who was there callred it a 'downer'.

I'd go for a downer from '73 any day

The title written on the Japanese obi is "The man who stole the sun".
This is a reference to the title of a film in 1979.

The story is about a man who steals plutonium and successfully produces an atomic bomb, and threats the government and demands give him the Rolling Stones perform in Japan.

I love these shows. They are so much less frantic then the 1972 tour before it and the Winter tour after it. They're great, laidback shows.
