Collaborations
Posted by: 3ddie ()

As I'm working on a project for my personal use with the collaborations the Stones did play live on officials and boots I can find in my collection I'd like to ask if I've forgotten something or maybe am not aware of.
No special order, just my notes:

Grrr Live!:
Gimme Shelter - Lady Gaga
Going Down - John Mayer, Gary Clark Jr.
Who Do You Love - Black Keys
Tumbling Dice - Bruce Springsteen
Respectable - John Mayer

Steel Wheels Live (official)/Atlantic City 89 (boot):
Salt Of The Earth - Axl Rose & Izzy Stradlin
Little Red Rooster - Eric Clapton
Boogie Chillen - Clapton, John Lee Hooker

Sweet Summer Sun: Hyde Park:
Bitch - Gary Clark Jr.

Isle Of Wight 2007 (boot):
Ain't Too Proud To Beg - Amy Winehouse

The Biggest Bang (DVD):
Shine A Light - Bonnie Raitt
Wild Horses - Eddie Vedder
Let It Bleed - Dave Matthews
Wild Horses - Cui Jian

Bridges to Buenos Aires:
Like A Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan

Live At The Checkerboard Lounge:
Baby Please Don't Go - Muddy Waters
Hoochie Coochie Man - Muddy Waters
Long Distance Call - Muddy Waters
Mannish Boy - Muddy Waters

Shine A Light:
Loving Cup - Jack White
Champagne & Reefer - Buddy Guy
Live With Me - Christina Aguilera

El Mocambo 1977:
Melody - Billy Preston

Honk Limited Deluxe:
Wild Horses - Florence Welch
Beast Of Burdon - Ed Sheeran
Bitch - Dave Grohl
Dead Flowers - Brad Paisley

Live Licks:
Honky Tonk Woman - Sheryl Crowe
Evereybody Needs Somebody To Love - Solomon Burke

Toronto Rocks (boot):
Rock Me Baby - Angus & Malcolm

Philadelphia Special (boot):
Uptight/Satisfaction - Stevie Wonder

Flashpoint:
Little Red Rooster - Eric Clapton (which is the same recording as on Atlantic City)

I know the Checkerboard Lounge doesn't really fit in as it's only Mick, Keef, Stu & Ronnie participating on a Muddy Waters gig, but I like it cool smiley
And there is a boot from New Jersey 1981 where they perform HTW with Tina Turner but I cannot find it in acceptable sound quality.

I don't mean to sound negative or spoil the work on this list but can anybody here name one song the Stones performed with guest artists that was actually better than when they performed it by themselves?

All those disappointing collaborations just go to show how amazing the Stones are, any attempt at complementing their work with alien artists ended up being counterproductive.

Melody with Billy Preston is wonderful, but it shouldn't be on this list. He was part of the original recording and a steady musician on the tour. It would be like mentioning Bobby Keyes or Lisa Fischer as special guests.

I love Boogie Chillen with John Lee Hooker, but that's not a Stones song. In fact the Stones were basically the house band for Hooker. Great choice by the way, that short appearance brought so much global attention to Hooker.

I agree totally that most of those collabs are disappointing.
But some are amazing: Shine A Light with Bonnie Raitt; Going Down with John Mayer & Gary Clarke; Respectable with John Mayer; Salt Of The Earth with Axl & Izzy; Boogie Chillen with John Lee Hooker & EC; Long Distance Call & Mannish Boy with Muddy Water; Champagne & Reefer with Buddy Guy; ENSTL with Solomon Burke; Uptight/Satisfaction with Stevie Wonder.

I included Melody because the Stones hijacked it from Billy's song "Do You Love Me?" from his 1973 album "Everybody Like Some Kind Of Music".

As I wrote above: My personal choice for private use.

Hmm.. Why should they be better? Why not just different? Something different for a change?

I don't think they bring up people in order to make 'best version ever' or better what they could do by themselves. It is just for fun, and doing something non-usual.

I never understand why people are so touchy about that.

Also a kinda collaboration with the Stones: the various choirs during 'You Can't Always Get What You Want'.

Re: Collaborations

The choirs are a nice human touch...and I'm sure it's a buzz for many of the choristers involved.

..but they're not so much a collaboration as they are an organic Mellotron.

Yeah, in New York, like Clapton too, but it was a different NYC gig. Elton John (in)famously also guested in one concert during that tour (he supposed to play just in in the open number "Honky Tonk Woman", but continued from then on until he was asked to leave...). I think it was Fort Collins.

I would second that...loved that version. I don't know whether it matters that they are 'better versions', but it is nice to hear EXCELLENT, different versions as well. Nothing wrong with that at all.

My guess is that Mick doesn't want anybody to steal the show, I could be wrong but the appearance of John Fogerty my guess is that they leave him out in the mix a bit
