I'm not at all starstruck, so I'm not actively trying to meet anyone I admire.

I once helped (pushed) Dizzy Gillespie getting on stage, as he couldn't get up the really steep stairs and seemed to fall backwards. He played great that night.

In 1992 Tom Waits wrote the music for the theatre piece "Alice" in Hamburg. I went to see one of the final rehearsals. In the pause I was having a drink. I turned and Tom Waits stood near to me. I smiled and asked him to sign my ticket. He did it and said something, I didn't understand. Then he smiled and left.
About 1996 I went to see a duo called "Spoke" in a small club in Hamburg. It was Joy Burns and John Convertino. After the show I had a beer with Joy Burns and he signed a single for me. They became "Calexico" and I went many times to their shows.

Hung with Paul Collins (The Nerves, Paul Collins' Beat) just before a house party he played in Murfreesboro, TN about 10 years ago. Cool, down-to-earth dude. Also met DJ Fontana (Elvis) and chatted with him (he played at friend's birthday party). Only two I've really met.

I've shared a moment with (got a high 5 from, patted on back, nodded at, made eye contact with, got a guitar pick from, etc.): Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains), Caleb and Nathan Followill (Kings of Leon), Troy Sanders (Mastodon), Jesse Hughes (Eagles of Death Metal)...

All were chance happenings. Celebrity chasers suck.

Dylan's whole band in 2002 and some individual members of his band throughout the years. I don't hang around and their hotels etc. but once in a while you meet them in the streets. Sometimes I say hello or 'great show yesterday' but usually I leave them alone. (I myself don't like to be recognized on the streets either).

Ha...that's funny, I've been thinking about who I met and I don't think anyone.

Having said that, I haven't tried or would even care to try.

I forgot that I met Herbert Grönemeyer and Wolfgang Niedecken at Dylan shows – or rather: I refused to meet them. The sat or stood near me at the shows/after the shows but I didn't care.
maybe other celebreties had been near me one time or another. But since I don't watch TV nor read magazines etc. I tend not to regonize people – even real famous ones. You could put next so a major TV talkshow host and I might as him what (s)he is doing to make a living…

How are we defining ‘met’ exactly? An actual conversation, or merely a pleasantry, or even a brief handshake, etc? The latter two examples, in my opinion, don’t count. I’m sure I’ve met a few ‘famous’ musicians through work, but I’ll have to think!

I've met Robert "Junior" Lockwood, James Cotton, Bo Diddley, Weird Al, and Micky Dolenz.

Robert Lockwood wasn't thrilled about the white kid at the table being the one who knew Chicago blues. James Cotton was outright hostile to me when his guitar player brought us backstage to meet him. Bo Diddley was amazingly gracious and down-to-earth for a true legend, put his hand on my shoulder, and called me "son" when I stammered in amazement that I was face-to-face with a legend. He also said more in a few minutes of conversation than I would have guessed. He was a true gentleman.

I was middle-aged when I met Weird Al through a mutual friend. We talked for a few minutes until it went awkward. Everyone I know that has met him thinks the world of him. I guess I caught him on a bad day. He was a bit of a condescending jerk. I came away thinking he wanted to feel special and resented having a nobody treat him like a regular person.

Micky Dolenz I met fairly recently. He seemed very normal and down-to-earth so long as you weren't a fan looking for something. He was a genuinely nice guy and I've known through others that he can be incredibly generous and good-hearted.

I've met other people like Jody Porter from Fountains of Wayne, I used to be friendly with Jimmy Zero from The Dead Boys. I've met a few people with Stones credentials over the years. I know a talented kid who told me Don Was or Ethan Johns were going to produce his album after he made a bit of a splash...in the end, neither did and it appears he dodged a bullet and is leading a normal life instead of being the next Springsteen.

I've met more people from film & television than music. I've met a few sports people. A lot of celebrities are miserable to be around. Quite a few have miserable lives because they're trapped by ego and addiction. A lot of them want someone to seem normal and not star-struck by them, but if you don't have a reason to be at the table, don't expect them to give you more than a few minutes. They're the talent and you aren't. Reason enough not to seek them out unless you just want a brush with "greatness."

I was in the music business in Seattle for over 25 years. It was a part of my job to meet bands, etc. I know my list is long. A lot of those (not all) were brief & there's more I could put on the list. I was a music buyer for a large chain of stores in the Northwest USA for a large part of that time. I was also a sales reporter for Billboard magazine. I've got a lot of cool stories & memories. Also, some cool pictures with people. I was at ground zero during the grunge years in Seattle. I never chased anyone. Sometimes things happened by chance like having Neil Young sit in the seat in front of me at the movies in NYC. I didn't bother him but did exchange pleasantries after the film. Years later I met him at a social function for the Bridge School & he actually remembered me. That was pretty cool!

If we're talking about a chance encounter, and not something connected to a meet and greet or a record signing or hanging out backstage at a gig ..... then I can only say that I've met Lou Reed.

In 1986 I was working at a publishing company in New York, and one day a girl who worked there came over to my desk and said, "Lou Reed is sitting in our lobby." I walked out there and sure enough, it was Lou, looking exactly the way you would expect him to look. He was shopping around a manuscript and was looking for a publisher. It was the first time I'd ever seen him in person, and it was on my turf! smoking smiley
