Stones 2023...what can be done to excite fans
Posted by: illyad1960 ()
Date: January 5, 2023 13:48

I have been a Stones fan for over 40 years. Enjoyed most of the ride but last tour didn't excite me. I found the set list to be repetitive and i lost interest. I would like to go back to the excitement of a Stones tour announcement and the tour itself. What can the band do to rekindle that excitement for me and perhaps other long time Stones fans? Or do the Stones care little about long time fans and wish to cater to new, younger ones? Special concert guests don't interest me, unless that guest is Mick Taylor every night. Thoughts?

The 60 Tour had excellent reviews both in the press and on fan forums including IORR. It was their most succesfull European tour moneywise. Why should they change something?

If you want to be excited again you probably have to change something on you side because the band probably won't do it.

to Illyad1960....sorry to burst the bubble...but Mick T is probably never coming back....and 80 year old men who have given it everything they had for 60+ years aren't going to turn back the clock 40 years for you or anyone else....take some accountability for your loss of interest....find a new passion maybe?...whatever the Stones deliver at this point is probably....well...a bonus.....

What can be done? Play some of the new songs.

The setlist was considerably less repetitive on the European tour last year, btw.

I thought the last tour was wonderful! Seems that whenever they lose a key member Brian, Mick, Bill, Charlie) it somehow makes them want to prove themselves more.

Only thing I'd change, is add 'Mother's Little Helper' occasionally. Pretty sure I read that it was rehearsed last time.

Put out a late career classic record. I think they're more than capable & it's doable even at their age(s). A really recent example is this week Iggy Pop put out a fantastic record at age 75. It's a lean & mean 36 minutes but really great. Getting good reviews across the board.

Yep. Personally, I haven’t wanted to go since Charlie died. 2021 was the first tour I skipped. The calcified set lists since roughly 2015 are frustrating to see online, but don’t feel like they matter once you’re in the house.

A new album will definitely perk me up.

sadly and logically at this point there money comes from casual fans not us hard core fans and they want to hear the big hits not deep cuts

but i would like them to add one more rarities slot in the setlists or maybe play a slightly longer setlist again

other ideas

same basic set list but significantly different order

bring back the acoustic mini set like in 2019

play more post 81 songs in the rarities slot/song vote

BETTER SONG VOTE OPTIONS!

but you know if they do nothing different i ain't gonna complain there still great and it's awesome we still have them

oh also

NEW ALBUM!!!!!!!!grinning smiley

A decent release of a previously unreleased 1972 show. It's about time.

If we're old and they're older and we complain the magic isn't there any more, the problem is us. It's like wishing your spouse was in their prime and being oblivious that you've aged as well.

The years together count, but you have to live in the moment or you have nothing but memories. Enjoy the tour, not Youtube cellphone footage. Enjoy the album. Enjoy the archival releases.

The loss of Charlie should be all the lesson we need. One day, many of us will only have archival releases and memories. They're here now. Live for today. There are no guarantees about tomorrow.

I think your question is absolutely valid and important. Unfortunately I doubt there will be any significant changes. The Stones can get by very well cranking out the same old stuff over and over. They have no interest in catering for a significant portion of longtime fans. Only for a newer, younger audience of those who get their music from classic rock stations and attend concerts because its something they think is kinda cool.

Also, there are some longtime fans for whom the band can do no wrong. Fans who would be happy to hear the same 20-25 tracks forever more. As usual there are some rather patronising comments around us longtime fans needing 'to take accountability' for our loss of interest. I disagree. Us marginalised longtime fans who dare to question anything the band do are made to feel like pariahs for our temerity. Why? We were buying their albums, buying their singles, attending their concerts and contributing to their legend, way way before the majority of those who now pack out their concerts. Why should we not look for a bit of variety in the setlists.

Speaking personally I have never wanted The Stones to drop all the warhorses, or ignore those fans who demand the big hits and classic tracks. But out of a typical 18-20 number set-list, would it be so awful to play 5 or 6 deep, and not-so-deep, cuts routinely? By scattering them around the overall set-list, surrounding them with warhorses, momentum will not be lost amongst those who only want to hear Start Me Up, JJF, Satisfaction, HTW, Sympathy, Rambler,BS (if they ever play it again), Shelter and the rest of the warhorses.

Sadly none of this will actually happen. We MIGHT get one or - gasp!- TWO rarely played tracks at the first few gigs. We might even get a couple of numbers from the new album, or single, or whatever might eventually appear. But these aberrations will be dropped quickly, so we can get back to business as usual. It is quite telling that despite Blue & Lonesome becoming a No. 1 album in several European countries, and top five in the US, it never had more than three of its tracks played on any concerts from the next tour. And even that was quickly reduced to just two tracks, and eventually one.

Out of curiosity, dd you also complain about the lack of variety in the setlists in the 60s and early 70s?

If you had been living with the same partner for 40+ years, would you demand your life time partner to change now, so that you could be excited? What happened to the previous 40 years? They were not exciting?

It is not about demanding wholesale change. Or asking the band to disown everything they did. Far from it my friends. I am suggesting just a wee bit more variety, scattered around the setlists. The core setlist - at least 12-14 numbers on it - can, and should, stay exactly as it is.

To answer Dandelion's perfectly valid question. The 60's and 70's set-lists were very fluid indeed. Featuring not just originals, but cover versions, old rock'n'roll classics, and tracks pulled from whatever their latest album happened to be. And remember they brought out a lot of albums then.

Bjornulf has also asked a perfectly valid question. And to answer it - no I would not expect my partner to change radically, dramatically, or to an extreme degree. But I would like them to buy new things to wear. Maybe a new hairstyle or whatever. Or suggest holidaying in a new place. I'm talking about freshening up aspects of our life together. Not disowning it all.

But they do exactly this. Europe got songs like Out of Time, 19th Nervous Breakdown, Ghost Town and Connection at most shows last year. These four songs haven't been played here for decades and I bet most people in the audience have never ever Heard them live before. Additional you had the chance to hear rare stuff like Sad Sad Sad, Fool To Cry, Can't you hear me knocking or even Angie. That's freshen it up for me!

True - if you went to several different concerts you would hear a decent amount of variety. But how many people go to more than one gig? However, you make a fair point for all that. I'm honestly not wanting to disagree about anything for the sake of it. We are all Stones fans after all. and just want to enjoy ourselves, and appreciate the band for the 60 years of music they have given us...

It depends on the fan. I don't expect anything new out of what is still called the Rolling Stones, though there's only two original members. My god they're almost eighty. It's amazing enough they can crank out those hits for those who've never seen them. (And are blessed with not having to compare them to the REAL Rolling Stones).

I'm in it for the vintage material. I'm still floating from El Mocambo. Thankfully I haven't reached the point with it where it's not novel. A 1972 concert. Maybe a complete compilation of the Maysles brothers films of the '69 concerts. Europe '67. Paris of Knebworth, or both, '76. I hope they've got something fabulous in the vault pipeline for 2023. It disturbs me that ABKCO is awfully quiet.

My first gig of the tour was HP1. They played 6 songs I hadn't heard in concert before. That's pretty good, isn't it?
