Judge &Jury: Who's the Better Stones Guitarist

TastesLikeMusic, a fine YouTube discussion show; Jason, Joe & Kramzer going thru catalogues of every band they can.

Recent post, they tackle the age old question, a debate that this forum has had a thousand times. I love both Taylor and Wood, just a bit of fun with some good points.

Yes, I've been a subscriber to their channel for a few years, now.

I love both Mick T. and Ronnie, though be it, for different reasons. Taylor was an exceptional lead guitarist, whose prowess really shined best on the live stage, whilst Ronnie is, in every essence, a Rolling Stone. He's not a bad guitarist, too winking smiley

RW. No contest.

I'm just happy they both played for the Stones and contributed so much.

Yeah right. They are both great for what they were asked to do. But when Taylor came to the band they did the majority of their best albums and the Stones were never better than on their live shows from 1969 to 1973. The Taylor band was the template for what they became and continued to be. , Does not mean they did not do great stuff with Wood. But for you to say no contest, you are entitled to your opinion.

At this point I'll go with Jagger.

There is no "better". It's music. We like it, or we don't like it.

I like some guitar players more than others, and the only thing they're "best" at is to play music that appeal to me thumbs up

Ron Wood plays guitar? Every time I see him in concert, he's walking around with his right hand up in the air for some reason.

Better guitarist is Mick Taylor by miles.

Technically Taylor is probably the best.

Ronnie certainly has his own very recognizable time.

Keith's rhythm riffs are some of the most recognizable in rock and roll.

Jagger carries his own as a supporting guitarist.

So depends what your looking for.

Keith - no contest.

Each brought a distinct quality to the Stones and were vital at the time they were there. Jones/Richards couldn’t have gone where Taylor/Richards did, and they wouldn’t have lasted until now without Wood/Richards. Ronnie’s been doing a lot of the heavy lifting for the last 20 years.

I saw, and this is off-topic, a really great guitarist last night . Redd Volkaert.
I reckon that should be its own thread though.

Keith has proven himself to be the best guitarist for The Rolling Stones.

As Charlie Watts said once in an interview and I agree with him, Keith Richards is the best rock rhythm guitarist.

Then, to me, the best lead guitarist is Mick Taylor and Ron Wood is the best slide guitarist of the band.

I'm going to play safe .

Ronnie is the best pedal steel player of the three.

...but in all seriousness...

...it's not a case of better or best.

Each has contributed something unique to the whole, which is where the real magic happens.

Exactly. Who's the best is playground stuff. They are each the best at the fantastic songs they've played on with The Rolling Stones.

Keith's opinion on who's the better guitarist, he or Ronnie (Ronnie says 'Oh well he knows I am...')

"We're both pretty lousy, but together, we're better than 10 others..."

Its always gonna be Mick Taylor, but thankfully Ronnie is a joy to watch and just such a fun guy. The guy they truly needed all these years. And without Keith you don't have the riffs. Brian was also a genius in his own way, seeing things none of the other 3 could have ever dreamed of at the time he was around and at that age.

But its always Taylor. For no other reason than he was on the records that were classics. They are HIS licks, no matter how much someone duplicates them. Its the same way there is never a better guitarist for Rod Stewart than Ronnie because he was THERE. They were his parts. I couldn't ever picture anyone with Rod Stewart even though he could get a technically better guitarist, because there's nothing like the swing Ronnie has with Rod. Its a feeling and Mick Taylor is the feeling that was committed to tape and made us all fans.

I don’t think Wood is a better slide guitarist than Taylor
