I don't think that Spain will/wants to win.
Because that would lead to a match against Brasil very soon.

Well, what did I say.
Spain - you name it.
it was very risky for Spain to lose on purpose because if Costa Rica had defeated Germany, they would have been pushed out.

To my surprise, I can still recite all the names of the 1974 West German team position by position.
To-day, I would have thought the orange team would have been more attractive, but back then,
the team that won was the best team, so the next day many kids in Japan started wearing shoes with three lines on them.

Japan ties it at 1-1.

Japan takes the lead 2 - 1 with a stunning goal just minutes later! Spain is flustered.
the second Japanese goal is not valid.
I wonder how they did not see on the video that the ball was out.

It definitely looked out. Now the announcers said there are so many angles and technology but I saw one replay that clearly showed the entire ball over the line for a second. I don't know how that was not changed.

Vamos Nippon! What a great sounding chant during the game.

I'm not German and I never supported this team but this invalid goal pushed them unfairly out.
Japan got away with murder.

What a fascinating football evening that was! I looked one match from a telly and another from a phone at the same time...

So Die Mannschaft is out. International football has really changed. Now two times in a row Germany couldn't got through from the first round and Italy couldn't even made the whole games. So used to that those two teams are the strongest and most reliable to have success from all of the European Countries. Now it starts to look like France and probably Spain have taken that role. And England is on the very top again, ready to take the cup anytime.

A quick look at the games table tells that if the favourites do not fail, a very big quarter final will be France against England. The winner will meet Spain in semifinal (however, Spain vs. Portugal is another possible strong quarter final). Then, if no surprises happen, the other semifinal will be between Brasil and Argentina. That will be a helluva match as well. My prediction, however, is that Brasil will not make it this far (Croatia will kick them out), and no matter which European team makes the final, Argentina will win, and these games are remembered as Messi's games. There is a determination and a shining in his playing that I have never seen him having before in WC.

But with all that said, my favourite stage in WC is always the first round, this group phase. So many games in a day, all the teams still in, biggest surprises happening, so much hope, but also fear around. True fiesta for a football fan like me who doesn't actually root for any particular team, but who admires the beauty of the game.

I see lots of people arguing about the “in or out” on the Japanese second goal on Twitter. Some of the threads for example:

Finally, it seems that the ball was not completely out cos the most extreme roundness of the ball was just above the line.

Image #5 shows the ball clearly out. Your pic shows his ankle on the ball as in #4. In image #5 the ball is over the line and the ball is upwards of his shin. Look at the gap between the bottom of his shoe and the ball.

Classless Uruguay and dirty Luis Suárez are OUT. South Korea gets a goal in the final minutes of extra time to win the goal differential.

After the game ended, multiple players on the Uruguayan team chased after, surrounded, and nastily berated the referees all the way to the locker room. Totally out of control.

The VAR room have got pictures from above. Then they see angels and info not seen from sideways cameras. The ball was never 100% out. As seen from above the ball was still half an inch or so or a cm from passing 100% through the technical line which is defining the actual "dead line".

Trust VAR. They see more than us.

I do always wonder why people spend time discussing millimeter precision and what was in or out or half an inch offside or not. Football is not an exact science. It is a combination of rules, players and the referees. In the end, the result is what it is.
