Really?

I thought they followed the M.O. introduced in 69. Let the band warm up with each gig played, then pro-tape the end of the tour when the band's really hot (NY + Boston).

They did that in 69 72 and 73 ("down-under").
Of course the tiny distances between each gig of the "Farewell" tour made possible the use of the Mobile lorry for each 71 gig.

Which would mean Jagger "sits" on live renditions of WH and CYHMK on 16 tracks reels...

It is my understanding that from the moment the Mobile truck was ready to record (most likely from about October 1970) they recorded all European shows from the 1970's. American shows were recorded with the Record Plant Mobile that was rented, so selected shows were recorded, resulting in about half of the 1972, 1975 and 1978 shows to be recorded professionally. Starting halfway the 1972 tour all shows were recorded straight from the soundboard.

How do you think they approached Wild Horses live in '71? We know at the Marquee, Richards was going to play a 12-string. You think Taylor played acoustic as well?

Thoughts, Mathijs?

Not Mathijs grinning smiley but I think they would have played it mostly acoustic à la "1969 Prodigal on". Keith on acoustic guitar in front of a mike and MT on electric, playing the solo with a clean tone.

Which makes the dramatic rework of WH done for the 75 tour (100% electric with a heavily processed (flanger?) guitar tone) all the more interesting.

The guitar most likely was played through a Leslie. I don't think they had the MXR Phaser in 1975.

Regarding WH, they could have done it the Sweet Virginia-way at the Marquee, or with an electric. Both approaches could have worked nicely, imo.

I'm not sure when they got the pedal, but it was around in 1975.

I only remember seeing the 12-string in the shots of the Marquee, but I could be wrong. Such a missed opportunity they didn't play it.

Yeah, I'm not sure how they did it. It's my White Whale of Stones performances alongside Clapton playing Key to the Highway with the boys in 1976.

We know for sure Keith was playing a 12-string at the Marque, but there's no acoustic to be seen for Taylor.

Concerning the leslie/Phaser: Wood used a Leslie on the 1975 tour, and this Leslie was also used by Jagger for Fingerprint File. Jagger used Wood's Zemaitis for the first couple of shows, then switched to Wood's Strat, then to a Strat of his own, all through Wood's leslie.

Richards used a Phase 100 for Wild Horses and Angie on the 1975 tour. The effect is less deep than a Leslie, and his a bit more chorus to it.

Interesting. I imagine they would have performed it the same way at Newcastle or any other early shows. Hopefully there is a recording out there, maybe even a tour rehearsal.

A friend bought this "Newcastle" recording about 2 years ago for quite a lot of money. It turned out that this is the well-known recording of "Leeds". But he got the money back.

That's exactly what I suspected above. Good to hear that the cheater did not succeed in the end.

Is that Keith's Harmony Sovereign MT has there ...or a different one ?

Could very well be Keith’s - I don’t have think Taylor initially brought any guitars into the gear pool beyond the SG and Keith’s former Lea Paul

I cannot believe they didn’t get a take of Wild Horses!

They may have and decided not to use it for whatever reason - I still don’t understand the situation about the rehearsal being the only footage released when we know they shot the second set with Keith in a different outfit. Still photos from the second set were even used on the cover art of the dvd release which makes it extra strange to me.

One possibility is they tried it during the "dress rehearsal" part of the Marquee club, that is the mini-concert they did with an audience (and which was far hotter than the actual concert imo).
