OLAF JAGGER TO OPEN 56TH HOF INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
VIP news will be buzzing when the 56th Hof International Film Festival opens with the film OLAF JAGGER by Heike Fink on 25th October 2022. The well-known artist Olaf Schubert finds an old tape in the cellar of his parents' house; it contains an interview with his mother and Mick Jagger. And that was in 1965! At that time, his parents' house was in the former GDR and the Wall was a closed border.
OLAF JAGGER now sets out on a detective mission to unearth this secret. It becomes a journey full of absurd situations and curious entanglements in the East-West conundrum. The film is about parents you can choose yourself, about rock'n'roll with a beating heart in both the West and the East. With a roguish wink at the audience, this mischievous, fictional documentary reflects a part of GDR history anew.

The "OLAF JAGGER" film is a mockumentary with German comedian Olaf Schubert as the main actor and was released in cinemas on 6-Apr-2023 and will be released on DVD on 19-Oct-2023.

It develops into a spontaneous search for clues in 'Olaf Jagger', because a secret lies over his biography like a shadow: the question of Olaf Schubert's father! Could it be, one hardly dares to think, that Olaf Schubert's power and musicality are due to the heredity of a man who, at almost 80 years of age, is still touring live? Mick Jagger, the world star, lead singer and front man of the Rolling Stones - could he be Olaf Schubert's father? It can't be ... it won't ... and that doesn't fit in at all with Olaf Schubert's GDR past. Or does it?
A seemingly harmless action sets the ball rolling. While cleaning out the cellar in his parents' house, Olaf Schubert is accompanied by a film crew. He reports that his recently deceased mother once worked as a presenter at the youth radio station DT64 and was a crazy chicken. Between carefully labelled old tapes with interviews of GDR stars like Renft, Nina Hagen, Ute Freudenberg - he finds one labelled '1965, Mick Jagger - Münster'. His amazement increases when he actually hears the voices of his mother and the British rock star on the tape.
He decides to get to the bottom of it. Like a scavenger hunt, Olaf Schubert moves from one station to the next and (supposedly) gets closer and closer to solving the mystery. A look at his mother's Stasi file finally takes his breath away: she was actually allowed to travel to the Rolling Stones concert in Münster, West Germany, in 1965, albeit under the strictest surveillance. Olaf Schubert has to deal with the thought that Mick Jagger could actually be his father. He now wants only one thing: certainty!
The entertaining story about Olaf Schubert's mysterious origins is in principle a classic mockumentary, i.e. a fictional documentary that at first glance deals seriously and earnestly with a subject, but which at second glance it parodies or - in other words - mocks. This also includes mixing authentic and fake information. According to the unwritten laws of mockumentaries, this should be done as elegantly as possible, without any breaks or the false sources standing out or seeming too unrealistic.
This works here most of the time, but is occasionally more charming than well done - one should rather not ask more questions about some twists and clues. Sometimes something actually important is swept under the carpet in a chevaleresque manner, or the order of the research seems arbitrary and not always logically structured. But the story as a whole is nicely thought out, the protagonist Olaf Schubert acts as a great sympathetic figure, and the developments are even surprising now and then, which is especially true for the first part.
But fortunately director Heike Fink, who also wrote the screenplay, had more in mind than an enjoyable but actually rather plain mockumentary about a prominent artist who could possibly have an even more prominent father: 'Olaf Jagger' is not only about the (fictional) research, but it is also about real youth in the GDR and about the love of rock'n roll, which had just as many fans in the East as in the West, despite all the state restrictions that wanted to prevent exactly that. The two themes of rock'n roll and Olaf Schubert overlap more and more in the course of the plot. This becomes all the more important because Schubert's role hardly develops from about halfway through the film. In other words, the script sags a bit after the biggest sensations have been uncorked.
Some attempts to continue building suspense seem rather contrived, such as the interview with an expert in family law or the conversation with a therapist. There is a lack of wit & drive and, above all, a lack of the charm that carried the film so jauntily from one station to the next at the beginning. Nevertheless, boredom does not set in, because now more and more personalities come to the foreground who are closely connected to GDR pop and rock history. Like Flake (Christian Lorenz in real life), who, like Olaf Schubert, is a man with a GDR past and became famous with the band Rammstein. In addition, a splendid selection of amiable originals is presented who keep the memory of rock'n'roll in the GDR alive with their projects and collections. It almost becomes a minor matter whether and how Olaf Schubert makes contact with Mick Jagger himself.
Conclusion: The pretty mockumentary is based on an original premise: Comedian Olaf Schubert, born in East Germany, could be Mick Jagger's son. Writer-director Heike Fink creates a complete background for her fictional documentary, which serves as a template for the research into paternity, including its surprising results. But this approach almost recedes into the background in view of the excursions into the history of GDR rock music in the second half, which basically only makes the film more likeable."

In an interview on 30-May-2020 with the newspaper Sächsische Zeitung said Olaf Schubert about the idea of this film:
"Q: Did you have more luck and ideas for new projects despite the [covid-19] crisis? A: Indeed. I've only just found out that I'm Mick Jagger's son. And that's going to be the subject of a documentary film that we're shooting from the summer. My mother was a journalist at the first Stones concert in Münster, actually to bring the band to the GDR. That's when it must have happened. We are now creating the father-son rapprochement as a road movie with stops in France, England and probably the Seychelles. Q: Do you think Mick Jagger will welcome you with open arms? A: Of course he will. Anything else would surprise me."
Note, that Olaf Schubert is a comedian from Dresden (Saxony), that Olaf Schubert is just his stage-name and that the Rolling Stones were in 1965 forbidden in the GDR for a long time.

There was on 30-Apr-2020 also an article with Olaf Schubert in the newspaper Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ) which mentions his Mick-Jagger-idea. But it's paywalled - [www.WAZ.de] .

In some other magazins they says the movie is great....
I don't pay much attention to magazins or newspaper reviews, preferring to form my own opinion.
