Just finished writing his memoir with him - a marvelous couple of years with some nice Stones content- come out in May next year - any DM fans here? Stories, memories, recollections?

I would like to know who invited him to play on the Banquet sessions. Was it Brian, who had been playing with him and Hendrix on the All Along the Watchtower sessions or his Traffic producer Miller

they were all just hanging at Olympic a lot - Miller started to work after the Stones after Jagger observed the Traffic essions- he was closest with Brian but Keith invited him to participate

Thats very cool! I saw him a few years ago do his Traffic Jam show and it was great! He was also randomly playing the middle of a casino I was in in Atlantic City. Great night staying at the table watching him play.

I was always curious: his Traffic show was filled with songs he never played. When I saw him he played 40,000 Headmen, Pearly Queen, Rock And Roll Stew, Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys, Medicated Goo and Dear Mr. Fantasy. Great songs and a great show, but the only ones he played on originally were Pearly Queen (barely, he played harmonica) and bass on Dear Mr. Fantasy. He did play Feelin Alright in the encore obviously.

He had a ton of songs in Traffic, I was surprised he played so many Winwood songs instead. Just cause thats where the money is? Personally, I'd have loved to hear him play Hole In My Shoe, Don't Be Sad, You Can All Join In, Vagabond Virgin, Cryin To Be Heard. Again, I had a lot of fun at the shows, but if I want to hear Steve Winwood Traffic songs, I could go see Steve play them lol. Not sure if he's ever gone into why thats the case, since he and Steve don't seem to be on great terms.

I think he just loves those songs smiling smiley i bug him to play hole in my show but he says it would be too hard to recreate

So weird lol. Again, loved my show and it was great hearing those Traffic songs but I absolutely expected stuff like You Can All Join In as opposed to Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys that was so long after he left. Didn't know if he has a reason for it. Either way, he's lived an interesting life and been a part of a lot of legendary projects. Would be super interesting in hearing his take on stuff!

Let's hope we could get some stories about January 21, 1968, the first evening where Dave, Jimi and Co. were working on "All Along The Watchtower" at Olympic Sound studio. I read Viv Prince also attended.

Some testy back and forth between Mason and Winwood over the years. Dave seems to feel that he was relegated to a sideman role in Traffic and that Winwood was in control. In all fairness, Steve Winwood would probably dominate just about any group of nusicians through sheer talent. (Odd, I dont own any of his solo stuff...) Here's Steve's rebuttal of some of Dave's assertions. A shame they dont get along.

His shehnai playing on Street Fighting Man is a classic moment on a Stones song.I often wonder how much he actually played on Beggars Banquet.Harmonica on Dear Doctor, mellotron on Factory Girl, guitar on Dear Doctor? ,guitar on Salt of the Earth?.It is strange Keith would invite another guitarist to play on the sessions.I guess because of Brian. But then he and Brian were friends and played together on Street Fighting Man.

I've always liked Dave Mason's music. I saw him perform live only once, on October 31, 1969 at The Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, as part of Delaney, Bonnie, and Friends.

Nice eloquent rebuttal from Steve Winwood, while Dave Mason sounds bitter about everything.

It says Brian plays sitar on SFM, but I only hear one, droning Indian instrument. Is it Brian, or is it Mason? I have a feeling the Stones have left a lot of 'guests' parts on songs over the years, especially if they worked.

It just makes for a better show, though I suppose it does begin to stretch the limits of credulity when he plays Blind Faith's "Can't Find My Way Home."

Brian is playing a tamboura throughout and Mason the shehnai .The shehnai is only heard on the outro of SFM.I also read thatBrian and Mason added drums to the track. On it’s original incarnation, Everybody Pays their dues, there was an electric violin

Didnt Brian play the distinctive percussion instrument at the beginning of All Along the Watchtower

The guitars on Salt Of The Earth are all Keith. And isn't there only one guitar on Dear Doctor?

Brian played sitar on the initial cassette recording, it's hard to hear as it's buried in the mud. Brian overdubbed tanpura, which is the droning instrument heard on each chorus etc.

Brian and Dave played big Moroccan drums, mason also overdubbing shehnai.

There is and it's obviously Keith playing it

I think Bill or perhaps his researchers just made a mistake re the credit in his books about Mason playing guitar on Dear Doctor. There's only 1 on take 1 and on the officially released version.

Years ago when I asked Dave about this guitar credit, he said "I think Bill is right." Then, years later when I asked re harmonica said he didn't play harmonica on it.

Brian is credited with percussion via official Experience Hendrix releases. I have my doubts though.

That it's vibraslap is a guess by listeners.

Brian tried playing piano on early takes, but he evidently was zonked and/or needed more time to be able to play anything that was worth recording. eye popping smiley
