He was a nice fit with the band. I lucky enough to see him play 3 shows with the band. Of course, Stu was aboard then too.

Mac's solo albums are all tops. Always riding on his personality and charm. Such a huge part of the faces was that they were just so damn likeable.
And IMO 'All the rage' is one of the best rock books out there.

I still give Troublemaker the occasional spin .

Bought it when it was released .
The record company [Mercury if I recall ?] obviously felt it needed a little help to sell.
It has a little round sticker on the cover that reads "There are some heavy weight musicians on this record "

I have his last two albums, Never say Never and United States.

If there is one Ian McLagan record to get, it has to be his 1980 album Bump In The Night.

It starts out solid with "Little Girl" featuring Ronnie on bass. But once that guest star turn is done, and when the second track, "Alligator" begins you're at another level. The band leans in and it just kills.."I'm not a woman hater..."

WTF!! Sweat, drama, passion. And it sustains that quality for the rest of the LP. The songs are strong, the performances are tight, it's got the swagger and attitude...this album is just plain brilliant. And through much of it, the guy with his own very distinctive sound on the keys is leading the band by playing guitar! And he does a very fine job as a lead vocalist, even as he takes a jab at Rod Stewart on "Rebel Walk."

Bump came out the same year the Stones released Emotional Rescue, which always sounded to me like they were only half-trying and sitting down when they recorded it.

The first time I met Mac (either in '84 or '85) I told him that I thought that Bump was such a great album that when put up against ER, it basically kicked the Stones' ass!

He laughed and took it as a complement, which was my intention. Maybe he was too close to it, but I don't think he was aware of how good it actually was.


Ian McLagan was the real deal. I still haven't gotten over his death.
