"The Stone Age: Sixty Years of The Rolling Stones"
Posted by: bye bye johnny ()
Date: August 2, 2022 16:42

New book by Lesley-Ann Jones, published August 2.

An acclaimed rock and roll journalist evokes the legacy of The Rolling Stones—iconic, granitic, commercially unstoppable as a collective; and fascinating, contradictory, and occasionally disturbing as individuals.

As Lesley-Ann Jones writes, the Rolling Stones are "still roaming the globe like rusty tanks without a war to go to. Jumping, jacking, flashing, posturing, these septuagenarian caricatures with faces that might have been microwaved but coming on like eternal thirty-year-olds.”

On 12th July 1962, the Rollin’ Stones performed their first-ever gig at London’s Marquee jazz club. Down the line, a ‘g’ was added, a spark was lit and their destiny was sealed. No going back.

These five white British kids set out to play the music of black America. They honed a style that bled bluesy undertones into dark insinuations of women, sex, and drugs. Denounced as ‘corruptors of youth’ and ‘messengers of the devil,’ they created some of the most thrilling music ever recorded.

Now their sound and attitude seem louder and more influential than ever. Elvis is dead and the Beatles are over, but Jagger and Richards bestride the world. The Stones may be gathering moss, but on they roll.

Yet how did the ultimate anti-establishment misfits become the global brand we know today? Who were the casualties, and what are the forgotten legacies? Can the artist ever be truly divisible from the art?

Lesley-Ann Jones’s new history tracks this contradictory, disturbing, granitic and unstoppable band through hope, glory and exile, into the juggernaut years and beyond into rock’s ongoing reckoning . . . where the Stones seem more at odds than ever with the values and heritage against which they have always rebelled. Good, bad, and often ugly, here are the Rolling Stones as never seen before.

I read some advanced reviews of this book over the last couple days that weren't very favorable. Looks like a hit piece focusing on excess & scandals. Sadly, because of the subject matter, it will probably be a good seller (LOL)!

This one has been out in the UK for some time (with a different cover - early photo with Brian and Bill present) - I bought it in Liverpool the week they played Anfield. Gossipy, several blatant inaccuracies but readable. More concerned with Stones as cultural 'icons' than the music.

ALISON BOSHOFF: Did Mick Jagger have flings with two of the Stones?

Very old rumour. If memory serves Mick commented it and denied it decades ago.

There is a subject which interests me (so to speak) as a matter of gossip magazine, tabloid. Yes I am a busybody sometimes. Why haven't we ever known about Keith having a fling after he got married? Has he always been monogamous while travelling around the world with Xwinos and Stones for years?

That’s a fair point. I suspect it’s because Keith, to the average person, simply isn’t perceived to be interesting in that regard, where as Mick very much is. Mick is the singer and lothario; Keith is the decedent, druggy and drunk guitarist.

Can the Mail be trusted?

These people obviously think that they cannot...

Brings back memories of shame so deep that even Rupert Murdoch realised that something had to be done when he closed down the News of The World.

I'll add that it wasn't many weeks ago that the Daily Fail wrote about how Wyman was on holiday in the South of France, yet he'd not left the UK since before COVID, and that the photo's used were over 10 years old.

What a bunch of crap, Mick and Keith are completely straight. Mick has been in orgies with other women and men of course, but obviously would never do anything gay (nothing wrong with being gay, just Mick ain't).

All this is because of his fun with Preston on stage and that Bowie colloboration in 1985. He takes the piss outta the media, that's all.

As for Keith, remember that Q interview in 1999?

-Have you ever cut out the middle man and shagged each other? the journo asked, which to Keith replied- "I'd rather shag a poodle."

Daily Mail is such a shit paper. PROPER tossers.

Guardian is good, however their music readers consist to 95% of studenty wan*ers who hate our lads.

It’s one of the things that’s always amazed me about Jagger, how other people project their fantasies on him.
Sleeping with Keith and Mick T is a new one, good lord.
it’s creepy how they take comments from Anita or Marianne and try to make it mean something else.

I remember when that Bowie ex had to admit him and Mick were fully clothed and passed out. “We’ll I thought they were doing something” I think she was hawking a book.

I wonder if it annoys Mick or he laughs about it.

Off course Mick laughs about it. And so do I. Just reading the link "dailymail" said it all. Page fillers ...

Well, I did describe it as ‘trash’ in my opening post. I just came across it on my MailOnline app.

I’ve always heard that Mick had a fling with Bowie well before the 85 collab. And what about Lennon??? Back in the late 60’s-early 70’s Mick was very androgynous looking and most folks tried different things.

Well, MJ seems to be looking at Taylor in the photo, so that seems pretty hard core proof.

actually i've come across a couple threads on iorr from 2000 and 2001 on the wayback machine about keith being seen out on the town with various women

it would seem in 22 years on our little community has here has matured past the point of speculating on who's sleeping with who (or so i thoughtwinking smiley)

as for mick i wouldn't be surprised if he experimented in his youth but i don't think he's bi or pan sexual (his numerous affairs with women and 6 dozen or so kids sorta exclude the whole exclusively gay idea to me) but even if he was it would be none of our damn business unless mick wanted it to be

if we really must start a rumour mill can we please make it about a new tour or album and not who's in who's bed

Well, let’s be honest, here: both The Guardian and The Daily Mail are equally awful and are rightly vilified, though be it, for differing reasons. Generally, if I buy a newspaper, it’s usually The Times.

B. Jones allegedly too :-)

According to the new book Jagger had intimate relations with Brian Jones, a member of the Stones until his death in 1969.
