Star Trek actress Nichelle Nichols passed at age 89 on Saturday night, her son Kyle Johnson announced "I regret to inform you that a great light in the firmament no longer shines for us as it has for so many years," he posted to his mother's official Facebook page on Sunday
Nichols became one of the nation's first black women to star in a primetime show after being cast in 1966 as Nyota Uhura on Star Trek. Her contribution to the film industry earned her a star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1992

She and William Shatner had one of the first of, if not the first of kisses, between a black and white performer on a tv series. RIP, Ms Nichols.

I had no idea that she was so influential. I just thought that she was talented and beautiful. What a terrific tribute.
