I've seen worse paintings from Keith from people who do painting as a full time job, so considering he's an actor and only does this for fun, it stunning

He will be selling thousands of set lists with a plectrum souvenir for 1000s of pounds each next.

But yeah really fantastic painting of Keith by Johnny, hope those guys kiss and make up soon.

It's directly "borrowed" from a b&w pic I saw in a British mag (Mojo? Uncut?) around 1998.
Krüger has much more talent imo.

Yes, you're right, I also immediately recognized the photo from an English magazine from about twenty years ago, which had a few of those different black and white photos, including on the cover and an interview with Keith.

"Working from photographic references, each image has been stripped back to a simpler and iconic portrayal of the subject,
which Johnny has then developed and energised with his characteristic freehand flourishes".

That's a fancy way of saying "Paint by numbers", and is also similar to doodle art and even childrens coloring books...i.e. filling in the blanks...
It's also a direct ripoff of Andy Warhol who pioneered the technique in the early '60's, back when it was considered cutting edge.

Same as some of Paul Stanley's "paintings" which are just filtered photos. Because learning to actually paint is difficult.

Yes, I too, thought Warhol immediately. I do like them though. Even if they might be paint by numbers.

Filtered photo. That was also my first thought. It doesn’t look as a work of art made by a human hand.

Imagine if we knew of any other musicians or artists who took influence from the past, eh?

... just filtered photos. Because learning to actually paint is difficult.

Also, style copied from Warhol: Photographic reference stylized with photo-mechanical method; hand drawing overlaid.
Warhol simplified photos and could draw with the sure hand of an artist who had understanding of shape and form.

"Working from photographic references, each image has been stripped back to a simpler and iconic portrayal of the subject"

Art World BS way of saying "Digitally altered photos, silk-screened and hand-doodled w/ paint pens". As many here have mentioned, without the TRULY iconic reference photos (and Warhol), Depp's images would not exist. I'm not slamming his offerings on an aesthetic level, and I assume Depp's alterations of the "photographic references" would fall under the heading of "fair use", but they are just so highly derivative. IMO, the creativity is a bit lacking. Great tactic business-wise, though - iconic photos of iconic performers presented very much in the style of an iconic artist by a popular actor = big sales.

I've done a "morph" of the original photo of Elizabeth Taylor transitioning into Depp's "iconic portrayal". No doubt the many Photoshop-savvy members of this board could produce Warholian images like Depp's in an afternoon. But fetching the big bucks for them - that's another story!

The morph takes about 15 seconds DIRECT LINK HERE

You can see its drawn from a picture. There's no life in it, no soul. Not to mention the technique.Suits more in a comic book.

I like Depp's Dylan ... Trying to copy Warhol's approach.
It is nice to see that he paints part of it by hand
Looks like he added the red background and the white lines by hand...
Quality of Depp's line drawing doesn't even come close to Warhol.

I believe Depp creates his art on top of photographs. I like what he does.

Yes, it certainly bears a Warhol influence. 50 -60 years ago we would use photo negative silk screening, then we would have to meme a crucial decision as to what to leave out / what to keep. One examined the literal “grey areas”. After determining the preference of light and shadow, the other choice was color and whether to “cut op” the image, either physically or with slashes of a dissonant color. I really don’t see evidence of this in Mr. Depo art
