Well now we can officially put a fork in them, though really I think that could be said several decades ago. Saw them about 5 years ago, playing the full Joshua Tree album, for very cheap in Buffalo - the only way I would have ever seen them. Glad I can say BTDT, but have never been a fan of Bono's narcissistic ego, or his politics for that matter.

A band that sells out every show on their tours and still creates (and releases) new music is "officially done" because they're going to play a handful of shows during a tour in a structure built for music in Las Vegas?
That's extremely entertaining.

I feel like once a band goes the route of the Vegas residency some sense of credibility is gone. But that's just my own opinion. We whine a lot about the Vegas Stones, but one thing they've never done is a Vegas Residency. Can't really see that happening.
I'm curious as to how many other non-American acts have had residencies there?? I know Celine and Shania come to mind instantly. Can't come up with any others....
And much like many on here decry that the boys haven't produced a good album since TY, I don't really think U2 have done anything great since Zooropa, which was really just a continuation of Achtung.

Didn't Aerosmith have one? And I may be misremembering but Elton a while back?
...AND, All That You Can't Leave Behind is a fabulous album.

Has Billy Joel lost his credibility?
What is your foundation for what determines credibility?

No, Billy Joel never had any credibility. He was always just an entertainer.
The Stones, U2, and many other rock stars had credibility because they had a significant impact on the broader culture, and pursued their careers as art and not just commerce. U2, in particular, has strived for a political and cultural impact.
Vegas has always been about commerce, and nothing else. So I have to agree that a Vegas residency is a sign that a band has lost its credibility, as that term is commonly understood.
LOL you might want to edit your quote placements!

U2 is possibly starting a tour in June of 2023, with several shows scattered throughout the tour at the MSG Sphere starting in the late fall in November.
Apparently there's also one being built in London. It will make the iMax theatres a joke.

What's your idea of what residency means?
The Vegas tag about the Stones has nothing to do with them (ever) playing Vegas, it's just about the culture of the shows.
There's always gonna be whoever saying whatever about how good something is after TATTOO YOU etc. Critically is one thing, as a fan is completely different.
Same with U2.
It's one thing to love an album as a fan, it's another to say 'But it's their BEST!' when critically it isn't and even that should be admitted or at least acknowledged by that fan (UNDERCOVER is a perfect example).
