The paint, the hair, the lip gloss, the special clothes - isn´t a lot of that (when worn by rock stars) purely about provocation? Like Rock n´Roll was supposed to be? But a very special few have that slight "almost-female" touch about them (maybe like Jagger and Bowie in the 70ies, among others) without giving me the impression, it´s "made-up" or meant to be provoking in the first place. I do not see Keith Richards in that line.

I don't think you could call Keith androgynous but he has that shyness and non-macho personality that many women adore. I'd say he was flamboyant but not androgynous.

Your English is good enough to say a lot for me! It’s just rock n roll, some like Cobain, Richards, Mark Lanegan, Eddie Vedder, Slash, Axl Rose have all wore skirts, makeup and women’s clothes but weren’t androgynous. It’s like you said there’s another slight thing to it, both in male and female androgyny.
