Just for fun (and for curiosity) - - what is/are your favourite (top 3 perhaps) and least favourite studio album closer(s)?

For my top 3, I'll go with Shattered, Moonlight Mile and Waiting On A Friend.

My least favourite is probably Mean Disposition (though to be fair, I really haven't given it enough listens to know it all that well).

I don’t think it’s fair that Mean Disposition is listed as the album closer for VL. In all fairness the cassette tape and original vinyl LP both ended with Thru and Thru, and only the CD had MD as a bonus track.

Hands down Thru & Thru has to be the greatest closer to any of their albums and for me it will ALWAYS be VL’s closer. I even made a playlist of the album so that it would purposely end with T&T as originally intended. Newer versions of the vinyl all include MD but the original did not.

After Thru & Thru, I’d go with Moonlight Mile and Slipping Away. How Can I Stop is a very close 4th. Very close.

Since Shattered is one of my least favorite songs of theirs that’s easily my least favorite closer for me.

YCAGWYW and Moonlight Mile back to back album closers. What a one-two punch!

When you consider the lead track off each, Gimme Shelter and Brown Sugar.

Unbelievable.

But then Beggar's has SFTD and Salt of the Earth.
and Tattoo You with SMU and Waiting on a Friend
Some Girls with Miss You & Shattered
EOMS, Rocks Off and Soul Survivor (not bad but the weakest of the closers in this grouping).

They really did have that formula down, they should never have messed with that.

You make a great point, VoodooLounge13, and as such I've amended my post to include the preferred Thru & Thru as another option. Thanks again for pointing this out.

This is hair-splitting activity in lack of tickets.

Goin’ Home is fine for the first few minutes, but becomes a boring dirge thereafter. I’m not sure what they were thinking, regarding it’s ludicrous running-time. Were they trying to ape Dylan, who’d had a lengthy closer on Highway 61 Revisited?

No surprise my top 5 are all from the big 4 plus Goats Head Soup.

Right now, here are my top 3:

3. Star Star

It's a great topic because I often think about sequencing; back when it still mattered more.
I see them in groupings.

Early on they are as bit head scratchy like 'Surprise Surprise". "Im Movin On" is great.
Then they got this vaudeville thing for a minute w/ 'Something Happened" and "On With Show".
Then the epic closers started "Salt of the Earth" and "You Cant always get.." and "Moonlight Mile" - songs that couldn't be anything but closers. They live you exilhirated.

Then come the big rocking finales, which are just as exciting. "Soul Survivor" closes out the greatest rock show in history, esp when the big rave-up begins with Nicky's piano at the end.
'@#$%&" and "Crazy Mama", and to a much lesser extent "Must Be Hell" (Soul Survivor Mach2) are in the same vein.
"Shattered" and "Fingerprint File" are the more sophisticated closers. Both obvious choices.
After "waiting on a Friend" then, we get the IMO questionable trend of the constant Keith ballads as closers. Some inspired, some not so much. "mean Disposition" I never see as the closer. "Thru & Thru" is the real closer. MD is like an extra tacked on.

Have we ever done this for the album OPENERS??

If so, it was quite a while ago - my recent search for both "closers" and "openers" didn't reveal any recent results, so I decided to pose a question on the former. I do think a new topic on openers would be a great idea, if anyone would like to run with it!

Or Blonde On Blonde? Obviously not, with such lyrics!

Can't remember which RS member who said it in an interview, but the producer/engineers just didn't turn off the "red light" (meaning *recording*) when they played Going Home in the studios of Los Angeles, and had the order to keep on playing if the red light was on. It wasn't prepared, if true, and that's also what it sounds like.
