Foo Fighters Announce Performers for Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concerts: Queen, Chrissie Hynde, Josh Homme, More

Jem Aswad
June 15, 2022

Foo Fighters and Taylor Hawkins’ family have announced the first round of performers for the Taylor Hawkins tribute concerts scheduled to take place in London and Los Angeles in September.

Performers include a mix of the late drummer’s friends and influences: Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor, Rush’s Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, Mark Ronson, the Police’s Stewart Copeland, Wolfgang Van Halen, Jane’s Addiction’s Chris Chaney, veteran jazz/rock drummer Omar Hakim, Queen touring member Rufus Taylor and Hawkins’ cover band Chevy Metal will play at both shows.

Pretenders frontwoman Chrissie Hynde, Oasis’ Liam Gallagher and Supergrass are on the bill for London only, with comedian Dave Chappelle billed as a special guest.

Miley Cyrus, Joan Jett, Alanis Morissette, Kiss’ Gene Simmons, Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx, the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith, Struts singer Luke Spiller, Queens of the Stone Age drummer Jon Theodore, Weezer drummer Pat Wilson and Rage Against the Machine drummer Brad Wilk will perform at the Los Angeles show.

While all of the artists have a connection to Hawkins, he was Morissette’s drummer before he joined the Foo Fighters in 1997, and Smith and Copeland were among his many close friends.

According to the announcement, the artists will be “playing the songs that Taylor loved and created, with and alongside his Foo Fighters brothers Dave Grohl, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett, Pat Smear and Rami Jaffee.”

Even more artists will be announced at a later date.

The shows will benefit charities to be announced later, according to the band.

Cheers bbj, and after seeing the lineups for both gigs I'm really hoping Chrissie Hynde will have James Walbourne from The Pretenders playing in her band in the London tribute gig, as he is an outstanding UK guitarist in my opinion.
He played at the Boogaloo pub in North London, Sunday afternoon with a few pals, and although not on YouTube the videos by a fan who was there are really good. smileys with beer

Hey crawdaddy. Agree that James Walbourne is a gifted player. Have seen him with The Pretenders several times in recent years.

Chrissie Hynde plugs his band His Lordship in a recent Facebook posting:

Hey everyone!
Look at James Walbourne’s other band, His Lordship. So cool and so needed in these:
songs by committee /auto-tuned/ multi-layered vocals / over produced / whinging / in it for the money / tits and ass age we’re in. Rock ‘n’ rollers don’t feature spreads in fashion magazines or awards or inclusion in halls of fame. Remember Lemmy. Never complain and never explain.
Thank you for the music His Lordship.

Oh, and she also posted that her future shows will be "punk rock/no hits".

I’m under the impression that these are Foo Fighters concerts with a lot of special guests. As such Chrissie wouldn’t have her own band. Perhaps she can bring James with her as an extra guest though.

From LEDZEPNEWS.COM:

John Paul Jones will perform at a pair of tribute concerts to honour Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins.
It was announced on June 17 that Jones has been added to the line-ups for the September 3 and September 27 tribute concerts that will be held in London and Los Angeles respectively.

James is a great music talent, as is his brother Rob who also plays guitar as well as drums.
They were both playing with their pal Peter Bruntnell, and one of his bands last Sunday afternoon at The Boogaloo Pub in North London.

Four great videos I've seen on The Peter Bruntnell Appreciation Society Group on Facebook but not on youtube.
I don't know how to show them here, but they are really good, especially with James.
Outstanding performances by all the band.
This is one of the videos I took at The Cavern Pub, Raynes Park nearly a year ago with James in the band.

Caveat - I’m a massive FF fan been seeing them live since small venues

I’m actually really enjoying this - great tribute. Pretenders were great, then crooked vultures and James gang reunions. Liam was Liam (pretty good in my view) and Nile Rogers, supergrass etc all playing great

Big question is who’s doing the drumming when it gets to the foos set?

Only downside so far josh homme murdering yellow brick road (and I’m a big fan of qotsa too)

I saw them open for the Stones. Lame-O.

Great energy for people not used to having any.

Most of this was great but the YouTube stream the sync was way off so it was hard to watch.

Supergrass, Rush, James Gang, Pretenders all great.

Brian Johnson sounded great but Lars ... jeez, stay in the Metallica universe and keep selling skateboards or branded Covid tests or whatever. And the sad thing is you know Angus got the invite too.

Wow, saw Wolf Van Halen on Youtube doing On Fire an Hot For Teacher. Probably the closest I've heard any guitarist play VH. Definitely has Eddie's DNA in him!

Not really. I’ve seen a few guys do it note for note. Slightly different rhythm and completely different lead. Wolfgang does not copy his dad note for note

Yah I agree totally different than his father. His leads are way more melodic.

Maybe Page was busy reissuing The Zeppelin catalogue again. He should of been there since he and Jones had played with him before.
