Vangelis - Evángelos Odysséas Papathanassíou - Greek musician and composer, has died at the age of 79.

I have been a fan of Vangelis almost as long as I have been a fan of The Rolling Stones. So many great songs, with Aphrotite's Child - Rain And Tears, with Jon Anderson, and all those great soundtracks for movies.

One of the highlights for me was walking out of the Stones show at the Olympic Stadium in, Athens, Greece September 16, 1998, when they played the Vangelis outro.

Vangelis: Chariots of Fire and Blade Runner composer dies at 79 (BBC)

Greek composer Vangelis, who was known for his celebrated film themes for Chariots of Fire and Blade Runner, has died at the age of 79.

He won an Oscar for the stirring score to 1981's Chariots of Fire, which was followed by Blade Runner a year later.

Paying tribute, US composerAustin Wintory wrote on Twitterthat Vangelis "changed an entire era of music".

This wiki article mentions it:

"Vangelis began his career working with several pop bands of the 1960s such as The Forminx and Aphrodite's Child
with the latter's album 666 (1972) going on to be recognized as a progressive-psychedelic rock classic."

His work with Jon Anderson is excellent.

Here's their original recording of "State of Independence," though I prefer the cover version by Donna Summer, and, especially, the one by Chrissie Hynde.

Rest In Peace. I only knew Chariots of Fire and I thought Vangelis was the name of the band!

I was never quite fond of the synthesizer albums he made in the 1970s that made him popular but I still love "Odes" (with Irene Papas).

RIP

I played back up bongo drums for Vangelis in the mid 70’s - we used to rehearse at his house in Paris! RIP

Talented guy, no doubt, but the "Chariots Of Fire" song was super boring - even before hearing it 8 million times.

Truly a shame. The opus that sticks out as a masterpiece for me was his work with Anderson
on "The Friends Of Mr. Cairo". Truly brilliant.

Absolute genius. And a great and unique character. He will be greatly missed.
